Re: hammers or axes
Each kind of weapon has a special weapon bonus. Each race has a specific weapon(s) they are more effective with. Dwarves get bonuses for using axes.
I am drawing a blank on what the axe and hammer weapon bonuses are. I am drawing a blank on what a dwarf has to do to get the dwarf axe bonus - it probably a racial trait that you have to earn and equip.
None of these bonuses are critical to game play. There is nothing wrong with a dwarf using a sword for the increased number of hits. Slot something other than the dwarf racial bonus for axes. My Minstrel uses a sword. There are no legendary Minstrel axes because only dwarf Minstrels can use an axe.
Once you hit level 45 or so, you switch your main hand to a legendary weapon. As a Dwarf Champion you will always be using a 2-handed legendary weapon later on. Or you be using a one handed legendary weapon with a loot - quest - crafted one handed weapon in your off hand.
Crafted legendary items are only available for character levels 60, 65 and 75 version. Otherwise, you will be using loot or barter legendary items.Last edited by Yula_the_Mighty; May 09 2012 at 06:30 PM.

Re: hammers or axes
Having also a Dwarven Champion (I have 4 Champions...), and loving the solid thump of 2h, I was quite annoyed by the fact that there are 2h Axe (not 100% sure of Hammers) recipes only at every 10 levels, while 1h ones are available in every bracket (every 2-4 levels). As Champions are all about DPS (live (kill) fast, die faster), fighting level 27 enemies with a level 18 axe WILL be quite slow. 2h Swords are available at every weapon-level range.
If you don't mind killing a bit slower, anything you can equip will work just fine, even Daggers.
As Legendaries go, the upside of 2h is that you don't need to hunt down a good off-hander for your Legendary weapon, and the downside is, that you get the bonuses from your Legendary itself, so they are in most cases quite abysmal (or the weapon will be very expensive). Finding a 2h with +Crit and +Might(before 75 Might is a very useful bonus) will become VERY annoying.
Happy Goblin-head-hunting. :-)Bravery calls my name, in the sound of the wind in the night. My sword will drink blood, and I will fight, yes I will fight, in the Dawn of Battle!
