Discussion: Anyone know why?

Lotro used to run great on my Laptop, 40fps on ultra high, but ever since U6 launched I haven't been able to play it..I can login, select my character and all that, but when I try to login Lotro freezes for about 5 minutes, then when it finally loads, my character is frozen, I am unable to chat or even turn my character. I have submitted tickets to Turbine, yet they never responded. And I have uninstalled Lotro and Lotro Beta (Which still works for me), and reinstalled both, and I get the same problem every time. If anyone knows how to fix it or what's wrong with it, please help me! Thanks.

After one of the recent updates I started experiencing a similar problem. In my case, sometimes the game would load fine, but others it would freeze. After googling and reading several posts online someone mentioned that Alt Enter might help. In my case it did help. I had only to hit Alt Enter twice to swap from full screen to windowed and back. I stopped having problems after a few weeks. Not sure if Turbine did something at their end, or a new video driver was automatically installed that solved the problem. In any case, if the game freezes again, try pressint Alt Enter to swap windowed/full screen mode.

I don't know why you are having problems but you can try this: delete the userpreferences.ini file. Reboot the PC and let LOTRO rebuild it.

Background:

While beta testing RoI I began to have some very odd graphics annomalies after trying out different graphics modes (testing). In my case, mid-distance images would not load. Near and far did. So there were some great wierd scenes of seeing trees in the distance hanging in the air with nothing under them. If I moved forward then the mountain/hill under then would appear. So the image was OK it just did not render at the right time.

After changing hardware and doing all of the other things on The List, I used my "little grey cells". As I had never had the problem before RoI and it only happened in LOTRO and it didn't matter I swapped out the graphics card etc etc -> it was a grahpics problem with LOTRO. Something wasn't set properly in the graphics card itself and whatever it was, wasn't being reset (ala /ui save/load doesn't load back all the settings).

So I tested the same rig using a different windows user account and everything was OK. The config files were identical between the accounts. Whatever "it" was was, it was not in the config file or not being reset properly.

Workaround/Fix: Delete the userpreferences.ini file, reboot the PC and let LOTRO rebuild it.

You might want to make a backup copy or note down some of your favorite setting before you do this.

some conflict with drivers may have been introduced. Have you checked your drivers (update or roll-back to older vers)?

Just four words to answer this: Look at the stickies.

There's a very long sticky thread at this very same forum section specifically created for all discussion about Post-U6 "performance issues" and some other glitches. It sounds like you're experiencing those in an exceptionally harsh form. Go look up there and post feel free to post your comments. It's always easier when feedback is in one place instead of being scattered all around the forums in a million threads.

However, I can give you one tip that may or may not help; Go to in-game options, Troubleshoot section, and turn down "Engine Speed". It's at very high by default, try high or medium to see if it makes any difference. It does help with random hitching quite often, though with as harsh symptoms as you describe, I'm not sure.

I tried all the recommendations and now I time out before I load.

Ouch. If changing that setting resulted in being unable to even load the game, you can change it back by accessing options from character selection screen.


I just thought to ask you something... When is the last time you have defragmented your laptop's hard drive(s) properly? When the game is updated, files get more fragmented than they were before, decreasing performance. Reinstallation (of the game) doesn't always help in this, as the fresh installation may also be scattered all around the drive into a little free spaces here and there.

If it's been a long time since the last time, I'd recommend trying that. Windows Defrag seems to do it's job quite poorly (matter of opinion, of course), so I would recommend a free software called Auslogics Disk Defrag as a better option. Download *only* Disk Defrag - not that BoostSpeed stuff or anything else, they don't really do much and they cost you. Disk Defrag itself is free and won't cause any problems.

When you install and open it up, select all your hard drive partitions, click the little arrowhead next to Defrag button and select "Defrag & Optimize". It may take quite some time if your drives are badly defragmented, but the performance increase can be huge. Laptops tend to have generally slower drives than desktop machines, making regular defragmentation quite important for getting good performance.

All tickets submitted (via the form here) receive a response, I'd recommend that you log directly into your email providers website to check their spam/junk mail folders because if they flagged messages from accountsupport@turbine.com/techsupport@turbine.com as such they wouldn't let a cell phone or external email program download or view messages they mark that way.

As to the issue you're seeing it sounds like the game client may not be able to fully communicate with the server I would recommend the article here and section two of the article here as a starting point.

Also post a dxdiag when you can (steps how are in the 'how to get help' sticky in my sig) it may shed some light on underlying system hardware and drivers that could be potential contributors.
