No, you can map 3 octaves to keys in the LOTRO keymapping configuration.
There are several awesome 3 octave keymap suggestions in this thread: Freestyling (keymap layout and first tune)

The ABC notation system isn't limited in that way, but the LOTRO ABC interpreter only has a range of 3 octaves (C,, to c').
I haven't tried MIDI2KEY, but I know LOTRO MIDI player can do that, it even reads your LOTRO keymap file so it works correctly regardless of how you remapped your keys.

thanks
you're right. i think an actual electric piano keyboard could be mapped through the LOTRO midi player you linked.
and that it would give 3 octaves. something like this :-
but i noticed that if I played a midi file through the Lotro midi player without converting it into an abc file first, i would get odd lag and dropped notes. i wonder if playing an actual electric piano thru into lotro would also have lag and dropped notes.
oh.. say which server do you think has the most active minstrels playing actual music?...

There are two client settings that affect how music is played back to you. "Quantize player music" and "Low latency mode". The effects of using those are mentioned in the freestyling thread I linked if I recall correctly.
But I'd say it depends. There are certainly limitations to what the LOTRO synth can do.

Actual music?
There is no spoon.
I suppose an RP server would be the most likely spot to find people who play music in game instead of running T2 Foundry.
