Being Belgian, I have a top machine and internet/LAN/WAN connection (Telenet Fiber 100: last check half an hour ago gave a 120MBps down/58MBps up on a German Test Server, and 130 down/60 up on a Holland Test Server)).
I get a general 500MBps download speed from LOTR (in between 300 and 700, but with now three short peaks of 8MBps), but this far the game will be here in slightly under 4 hours.
Since we are in a time where technology is slightly better than 500 years ago, a 500Kbps (yes, KiloBITS, not even Bytes) is just not acceptable.
More not since the 8MBps peaks show that a better speed IS possible.
short answer: theres nothing you can realy do to improve the download speeds
slightly longer answer: you could try pausing\restarting the downloader a few times which may result in faster download speeds, inversly it may also result in slower sppeds. but even then you wont download at your ISP's maximum download speeds simply because (iirc) download speed for each user are capped to prevent one person hogging all the bandwidth but atm youll find your also fighting with other returnees or new players who are also trying to download which im guessing is higher than normal

11 or so _gigabyte_ file in about 4 hours and you're disappointed with this? Heck.. I can remember downloading mp3's from Napster over dialup not so many years ago and it taking 8 minutes for a 3mb song :P You could try downloading at a major university or something that allows access by personal computer and take advantage of a fiber op backbone...

even if you have a faster download capacity it isnt likely to make any difference, your isp could offer download speeds of gigs per second but if the service your downloading from is flooded your speeds will be stuck at the much lower download speeds the OP is experiencing, is like trying to drive an f1 car arround the m25 at rush hour nobody moves above 1mph not even the faster f1 car.. the has already seen this as hes not downloading at the max speed of his ISP
Well, I recently (last month when the Preview came out) got Win 8 Preview, a 3.3GB ISO, under 1 minute.
These are normal speeds for me, LOTR should have arrived within at TOP 5 minutes.
That is: SHOULD have...
500'ish MBps is not normal this day in the Technology Era.
Even not when 10 people are simultaneously downing the file.
When W8P was released, more than 100 users were on that file, and still I got it under a minute.
You cannot tell me, 100 users are right now actually getting the game, right?

that would be because M$ can afford to spend extra on the extra bandwidth requirement for 1000's of downloaders at once at maximum speeds. turbine on the other hand cant or dont want to spend the extra money required to open the bandwidth to allow maximum download speeds most isps are capbale of.. more bandwith allowed for each user = more money... not only that lotros file sizes are between 7gb for standard and 10gb ish for the highres
even on a good day when there are fewer people downloading lotro you will be looking at download times of 2 hours or there abouts, thats excluding the time required for patching lotro once its installed

I suggest you take a look at the torrent sites...
Downloading the entire game using Pando might
give you the most up-to-date version, but I've found
getting a not so up-to-date version and then updating
as normal, even though it does still take a lot of time,
it's faster and more consistent in speed.
Even using my MoM-dvd and updating seems to take less time.
Sorry to say, when it comes to installing the game,
your rig and internetconnection are overkill, as are mine...

I nsuspect that Microsoft pays Akamai millions per month to provide a hefty dowload capability.
All I can suggest is that you try downloading an iOS update from Apple, who apparently do not choose to spend their money the same way.
Bandwidth in the amounts required does not come cheap.
Unlike the Windows 8 Preview, LotRo is worth waiting for.
You got an impressive amount bandwidth into your PC. When you go to download something most of that bandwidth is going to waste. Your speed is determined by the slowest device in the entire path. Which could be any hop (router or link) in the path provided the various companies. Or could be host of the files themselves.
Turbine gets a million 10 gigabyte downloads a year. That is a lot of bytes. It is a free game. That amount of data is expensive to ship. If Turbine is paying a penny per gigabyte that is 100 thousand dollars a year. Plus other costs. Turbine does not want spend millions of dollars a year hosting these files. Hence the use of a Peer - To - Peer application called Pando Media where the files are hosted on our PCs using our bandwidth.
You will get much better results with a download from some one like Microsoft because Microsoft is looking for free testing of their newest operating system. A product they are going to charge two feet and eye for. Microsoft is looking forward to billions of dollars in sales. Once the operating system live launches. No more free downloads. The download cost will be built into the price of the OS.

Same thing happened to me! It took my 16 hours to download and instal the game..the download took the longest, I was able to get a full nights sleep and it was still loading when I woke up. Now that I can play it it won't let me past the character page...kind of lame.

Select Options and set the Graphics Hardware Level to DirectX9. This should solve the problem and you can reset it to a higher level once you are in the game.
