I've recently been attempting to collect the special fish to finish the three fishing plaque deeds, for darter, trout, and sturgeon. I've done some pretty exhaustive research on the multiple wikis and guides for it around the internet, but very little of the information seems to be relevant anymore. For instance, fish locations no longer seemed to be based on region, as I caught the entire darter group in a pool in the Misty Mountains, yet have tried various other locations listed for some specific trout and sturgeon, but caught not even a single deed fish. Trout seem to be specifically exclusive to Evendim and darter have only shown up in Angmar and the Misty Mountains. On the other hand, I've searched high and low (including the secret Fishing Hole) for sturgeon and haven't found a single one.
According to the guides by the older updates, my proficiency is high enough (roughly 130 as of now, and using the best pole) for all deed fish, except the 50-pound salmon. However, since I haven't caught any sturgeon and have found three of the nine salmon all but impossible to catch, I wonder if the deed fish are now proficiency gated instead of by region?
Up to date advice and information would be very helpful.
Just keep fishing. Everywhere. By the time you get your hobby maxed, you'll have a better idea of where to catch what.
If it helps, I caught my sturgeon in the river near Mirobel; darter at the Ford of Bruinen; and trout in Suri-Kyla. But I'm pretty sure I found them all in other places too; those were just the spots I parked myself until the deeds were done.
Caveat: due to overfishing, I haven't done much since pre-RoI. I assume nothing's changed, but....

I caught most of my deed trouts in that pond with the bridge in the middle of north downs. As for the deed sturgeons, i've caught some in the waters of the vile maws, and some from that pool in the crafting area of Ost Galadh, mirkwood. i also caught my 50 pound salmon in vile maws, so i think the types of fish in there is pretty diverse.
hope this is useful, and remember; the most important about fishing is to be patient. =]
I caught most of my sturgeon in the Bruinen in Trollshaws. If you go to Gaston's Cottage (where you chase Gollum) and continue south, eventually you will enter Eregion. There's a very nice, seculed pool there (tho you might have to battle some worms to get there, there are no MoBs around). I seem to recall that I got a couple of sturgeon in Aughaire in Angmar (that was frustrating; later, I heard that fishing in non-clear water reduced your chances of getting anything). I also caught the 50lb Salmon in one of the small pools on the Western side of North Downs (towards Dol Dinen).
Like others, I maxed fishing pre-RoI, and haven't really spent anytime doing it in a long time. I just realized that I haven't even bothered to fish in either the Anduin or the River Isen...
Yes sadly, this was another thing changed after Mirkwood...
It used to be only certain Sturgeons were in certain areas (and other fish) and you could spend HOURS tyring to gte that last elusive fish from Forochel or Trollshaws... then you had a title of some merit. Yes, the title meant basically "I have time to waste", BUT....it was a time sink title that you could show off. Now, you can get all 3 rare fish titles in basically the same puddle.
I'm curious Turbine, so when will you make Chicken-Play this easy? Im just dying to see hordes of players finish the last 8 hour quest (that is a time sink and can be quite hectic), in the same fashion.
Why they insist on making NON game breaker moments so DUMBED down is beyond me...

Seems like all pre-RoI information involving any of the fish locations or levels is completely irrelevant at this point. I'm just trying to figure out if they even put it in a dev diary or anything, so that people trying to complete the deeds at least have a little bit of direction. Like you said, you can catch them all practically out of the same puddle, but then there are certain ones that never appear unless you're in a specific spot.
I also agree, why they changed any of it in the first place is pretty questionable. Adding new areas didn't mean they had to completely screw up all the time and effort people put into the guides that are out there.
Caught all sturgeon in Great River, as well as a 50 lb salmon.
Darters: 6 of 9, 5 caught in pool by GF (NE angmar), one caught in Aughaire (and 3 repeats so far)
Have a report of half from east angmar, half from west.
Haven't caught any trout yet, but have a report of the whole set being caught from Tinnudir.
Nothing's changed. The very old guides that list very specific locations for very specific fish are outdated.
It's now basically: all Trouts = low level areas, all Darters = mid level areas, and all Sturgeons = high level areas. Mostly.
Also, there's no need to waste time travelling to remote locations in the game world. You can complete all of them in instances, so you can park yourself in Bree for easy access to the taxidermist and vendors and still get them all done.
For Trout-Master, launch a level 40 Glinghant, kill the first 5 mobs at the entrance and fish right there at the first pool.
For Darter-Master, launch Carn Dum, turn left down the ramp a little, slide down the cliff before the first group of mobs, and fish at the bottom of the cliff.
For Sturgeon-Master, launch Ost Dunhoth and fish at any one of the small pools at the corners of the starting lobby.

This is true. I caught the entire set of trout off the cliffs near High King bridgy thingie. Still looking for darters, sturgeon and the 50lb salmon.
I didn't read the entire thread so these spots might have already been pointed out.
I used 3 fishing spots to complete the entire fishing deeds: Lake Evendim at the main camp, Suri-Kyla inside the camp in Forochel and the lake near the Haunted Inn in Mirkwood. Took approx. a day of on and off fishing while working on some uni stuff. I had already opened the deeds while fishing in the Vile Maw instance back in the day when it was the only end-game raid. No clue if it's still viable as a good spot.
Good luck!
ps. I caught several 50-pound salmons in Forochel, none anywhere else.
I caught all the trouts in lake Evendim, near the boat in Tinnudir. Still sport the Trout Master title with pride I'm still looking for a spot to catch some darter and sturgeon, thanks for the tips in this thread!
Players won't catch sturgeons if their skill+pole is under 150, that's why the OP isn't catching any. You need 50 for trout and 100 for Darters.
As others have said the fish type are available in certain regions:
Lonelands, North Downs, Evendim, and Trollshaws for trout.
Forochel, Angmar, and Misty Mountains for darters.
Eregion, Lothlorien, Moria and higher for sturgeon.
I caught all my darters in Forochel in Suri Kula (Takes alot of fishing and DON'T go in the water! You'll freeze). I caught all my Sturgeons in Enedwaith. I found that only 2 a day is all I'd get. Go back everyday and get 2 more. I did my trophy's for darters and sturgeons in a week. I was at level 170 when I caught them.
