Finishing my download as we speak...but probably gonna have to look into upgrading my video card from what I'm reading. Oh, well, I was gonna have to upgrade for Guild Wars 2 anyway.
I've been thinking about purchasing Diablo3. I didn't play the first two so I'm kind of struggling to get my head around what it is all about. I've watched a few reviews but still am a little unsure. Is it basically an MMORPG like Ultima Online with a isometric ( or whatever it's called ) viewpoint? Where you level up and eventually go on to do raids as groups?
Graphically it looks very nice indeed, and I like the no sub idea. The real cash auction sounds interesting. I gather they had problems with gold spammers in the previous game so this was done to take the bottom out of their market, and the gear is designed to not allow people to buy top level stuff and use it at low levels etc, so they do seem to have thought out the issues with RMTs.
I'm 80% on my way to purchasing and was just curious what people opinions of the beta were.

The Diablo series isn't an MMO, it's a single-player game with co-op functionality.
Basically, you log into battle.net (Blizzard's non-MMO facility) and into the lobby. From there, you can create a game to join, which sets it up on their servers - this can be passworded, which you can then use to keep it a single-player game or give out to friends to join you in playing through the game.
The game follows a story-line, there's a definite start and end; once completed, however, you then open up the next difficulty level, which makes the game harder but also opens up better loot-drops from monsters and bosses. Boss monsters are made more difficult, the more players are in your copy of the world - it can be quite good fun.
Having played through Diablo 1 (with Hellfire expansion) and Diablo 2 (with Lord of Destruction expansion), repeatedly, I'm definitely looking forward to the third installment.
However, if you're looking at it, expecting the full social-aspect from an MMO, then it might not be to your liking...
It's like the old classic Gauntlet, basically. Run around, blast the [stuff] out of things, and collect goodies.

Yup. Basically, if you liked Diablo 1 and 2, you won't be disappointed. If you were expecting anything like new functions or features... napes. It's just Diablo 2 with better graphics. BUT, I mean come on. How could they really have made Diablo any different?
It is what it is.
I expected something that I shouldn't have. Like an MMO version of Diablo 2. So my disappointment means nothing really. I set myself up to be disappointed.

I used to love gauntlet, except when my buddies used to steal all the keys and constantly shoot me in the back :P
The hardcore mode sounds interesting. I'm not sure how long it actually takes to complete the game, but I can imagine things getting pretty tense on hardcore once you're a long way into the game, and you stand to lose everything when you're killed. No auto attacking while watching a move then eh ;D
