Any tips on how to use this skill when I do group? Do I target the healer, hit protection, and thats it? Are they 'protected' from then on, or there a duration on this (don't see one from the tooltip description). Boy do i wish that the tooltips gave more/better detailed info on skills....

It's a toggle skill. Put it on the target and it will be there until either you or the target break it (go out of a certain range). It's most useful if you put it on the other tank in a group to share their reactions. It can also be used (traited) in dps race type bosses for the -10% perceived threat on the protected target.
One of the Guardian traits, which you probably haven't earned, reduces the perceived threat of your protectee, making it easier for you to hold aggro on you and off of them. Some instance bosses are "kill as quickly as possible". If you Protect a DPSer (someone doing a lot of damage = threat), it will aid you in keeping aggro.
A spaceship from another star / They ask me where all the people are
I tell them I'm the only one / There was a war, but I must have won

I don't know of any traits that do that currently. I think that was an older version of the skill or trait. As it works now it's really only useful in OverPower and occasionally when dual-tanking. I can't really imagine any circumstance where I'd equip the trait for it.

Selfless Defence. It doesn't say anything on the trait tooltip, but equip that trait and check your protected target, you'll see the -10% perceived threat.

There's nothing in the lorebook or lotro-wiki about it either. I'll verify it tonight and edit the wiki. I'm still not sure I'd ever use the trait, but that does make it a bit more useful.
I'm totally confused! If you're working on getting the Selfless Defense deed, them you obviously won't have the trait yet. If you want to earn the deed just toggle Protection on and off of someone until you hit the daily limit (probably 20 or 25 per day). Eventually you'll get it. Now, for the trait, you should definitely take some time and read about how threat and perceived threat works in Lotro. There are a ton of posts in the Guardian's forum alone that should get you well on your way.

If you refer to my first post, he was asking about ways to use protection when in a group, so I offered him the primary way to use it (getting reactions from the other tank in the group, no trait needed) and also a secondary use for it (-threat on the target, but the trait is needed). Getting the trait is pretty simple, just go to a highly populated area (Bree) and use protection on random people until the bar in the deed log goes yellow (should only take a few minutes to hit the daily limit). It'll take you a few days to get the trait, but you probably won't really be using that trait until endgame anyways.
@Valiant_Turtle I can guarantee to you that this happens. It might be an unintended result from the old selfless defence trait, but the -10% perceived threat definitely still occurs despite the fact that it doesn't say anything about it on the tooltip.
Edit: posted on wrong account, first post refers to Rocoman

If you're uncomfortable protecting random people in Bree, you can also use protection on your skirmish soldier. So that's an alternative for getting it done quickly, just run an offensive skirmish and keep re-applying it to your skirm soldier.
its very easy to deed Selfless Defense, u can finish ur deed even its from 0 in less than 2 min if u had skill deed accelerator and u need to have shield wall skill. summon ur soldier when u in homestad or go into skirm, use shield wall first on ur soldier then hit fast protection as many u wanna.

I think he was saying that he didn't know how to use the protection skill to acquire the deed. Which is why I was confused when people started explaining how selfless defense works... which, if the poor guy is just learning what protection is about, is going to confuse him even more.

I've had a lv75 guard for months, but only recently finished my last two traits for it. The traits for Protection and Fray the Edge take forever if you don't grind them to max everyday. Now that I have Selfless Defense, though, I never use it.
Typically, I only need to use Protection when tanking with a partner in a raid. ToO-Lightning wing comes to mind. I'll use Protection on the other tank, he'll use his on me, and we'll be able to use each others Block & Parry events. Works great, but wouldn't work as well if we both traited Selfless Defense because we'd be drawing threat from each other, and that can be a bad thing in a situation like the Lightning Wing boss fight.
But for the most part, I primarily run with my kin, and they all know how to play their classes to near perfection, so I never have to worry about boosting a healer or DPSer's B/P/E or tempering their threat because they rarely pull aggro off me.
But if you really want to grind it, start a skirmish, cast it on your soldier (with my guard I use a sage, by the way) until it's capped for the day. Or hang around Bree and cast it on random people.
