It may be possible that you got bad file. Some corruption tends to happen accidentally.

Please check, if your music file is named NAME.ABC - not NAME.ABC.TXT or NAME.TXT or anything else, and that it is in the correct place - under "Lord of the rings" folder in your "My documents", into new created folder named "Music". Not in the "Lord of the rings" folder under "Programm files".

You can as well copy the code i will post in the CODE brackets below, paste it into Notepad or any other text editor and save it as LUTE.ABC file, then place in your music folder, and thry "/play LUTE" ingame. The song is just a testing, so it doesnt wotrk exactly as it should ( problems of conversation) but it was short one and for pure testing purpose.

That is what the problem was. I downloaded 2 songs and both were corrupt; I didn't download then from the fat lute. The ones I downloaded from the fat lute last night worked great

Now for the question. I know bards gain new instruments as they level, but do other characters gain new instruments past the first two they can use to start? As in my hunter can play the lute and clarinet, my wood worked can make another; I forget the name, stringed instrument, but can my hunter play it?

You won't gain the ability to play other instruments from your trainer, but you can either have a Minstrel player teach you the instrument or I think you might be able to buy the ability for TP in the Store. Not sure on that last part, though.

Ok, without help from a high level Minstrel friend, you can play just a few instruments:
    Burglar: Clarinet
    Captain: Horn
    Champion: Horn
    Guardian: Horn
    Hunter: Clarinet, Lute
    Lore-master: Clarinet
Minstrel: Clarinet, Harp, Horn, Flute, Theorbo, Drum, Bagpipes, Cowbell
    Rune-keeper: Lute
    Warden: Horn, Lute
Minstrels can also teach other characters a few instruments:

    http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Skill:Mentor_:_Clarinet

The way it looks my characters can't play the instruments my woodworker can make. Maybe I just need to make lower level ones. Now what to do with that exquisite crafted theorbo?

She doesn't have any tier 1 instrument recipes, not sure if they are only a drop; which means I should have it, or if there just aren't any. May have to buy them from a vendor; that sucks. I mean they are all the same from a vendor, wonder if different vendors would have different styles?

As noted by Hatter, unless you are a Minstrel, you have to get special mentoring in order to play anything beyond your basic instruments. You will not be able to learn it on your own in game.

As for the woodworker, most all of those instruments are going to be meant for a Minstrel to use as the primary "weapon". If you want one for another character just for playing, check out what is for sale from your local bard (yep, same place you go for configuring your traits).

Thanks. I ran around Bree like an idiot for half an hour before it dawned on me where to buy a lute LOL

Wounder if I would get in trouble for posting a vid of my character playing one of my favorites?

I've never put anything up for auction. I'm not in this for the gold But I do have far more polished gems then I'll ever use.

By no means, if you get something created and posted on youtube/vimeo/somewhere else videoserving, give us a link or embed it there. Im pulling off my hat for you, if you really can make a video from Lotro ( newer quite managed to get Fraps configured properly and for use with Lotro ). Double bow, if that result is a nice video of you playing ingame. Its not that often to see such a capability.

There is also special forum section for screenshots and fan videos, you may want to go there and check these too. Good advices about creating screenshots and videos in LotRO.

    Re: New with questions

Let me tell you about myself. I'm 51, single; :P, broke, and jobless. Not just because of the present situation in the US but I have arthritis and emphysema; had to give up my job last October, just couldn't do a days work anymore. My mother is retired and I do for her, my best friend lost both legs; knee down, to diabetic infections, so I do for him as well. What else have I got to do. It's not like I can't still work, I just can't work for long. So I have time to play during the day; all day if it rains all day lol

"I have been playing video games as long as there have been video games" I've said that so often I need the copy rights on it lol But really I started with pong. I played AD&D for a few years, I was the dungeon master and had created my own world; right down to the creation myth. My first comp was a Ti99/4a; with data casset memory.
I wont get in to my list of PS1, and 2 games, but I still have them all; I conquered them, they are mine. I've only been on line since 98'. And I have probably only played 18-20 MMOs. I don't do FPSs. FRGPs are 3rd on my list; sorry, survival horror and racing are number 1 and 2. But they have to be good. I like a well structured and multilayered games, so right now this is my number one game to be playing. ACR was till the open beta release; auto club revolution. I'd been playing for 10 12 months from the private beta to the open beta. The game economy killed it for me.

Yes I am a beta tester. Started when I first came on line and betaed for winrar. I've beta tested for several companies over the years. My favorite being spiral graphics, Genetica is a texture generating app, one of if not the best.

I do CG; comp graphics for fun, I can model, texture, rig, and animate. I use sort of fringe apps, Not the big ones but nothing to take lightly.

All of that leads to and explains this http://www.youtube.com/user/srgreeniii?feature=mhee

I hate using fraps to vid cap. Makes some heavy vid files. I can cut them down to a reasonable size, but it kills the quality.

Sometimes I put things up for auction because I know someone else likely needs them. Especially components in crafting, they get snapped up fast.

Another solution is to make a second FTP account (can use same e-mail), and mail your extra stuff to those 2 characters. Adventure them just enough to cover the coin to expand their Vaults and cover their own return-postage fees, and you're good to go.

Looks like someone snuck in a forum revamp, sections are missing or reorganized, and this thread was 15 pages yesterday lol

One of my characters; hobbit gaurdian, is down to 5 open quests. She's just finished with the barrows; nonfellowship quests, and hasn't went to the lone lands yet. "ya, so?" Well my hunter has 28 open quests, the next lowest is my loremaster at 16. Not sure how this character has finished so many without having picked up a dozen more by now lol

I'm still running in to issues with crafting, not problems I just have issues with the superior crafting bench being in Esteldín, and the superior forge being in Thorins gate. This makes crafting with my tinker and weaponer a PITA. My tinker has to go to thorins gate to work the platinum to bars, then to Esteldín to polish gems and make jewelry. I seem to spend as much time getting from one to the other as I do crafting once there.
Is there a craft hall that has it all? Or am I not looking in the right places at Esteldín and thorins?

For Thorin's Hall, if you get at least Acquaintance with the reputation faction, you can enter the Blue Stone Garrison area and find a Superior Workbench there.

If you plan to join the Weaponsmith Guild at some point, it is handy to have a travel skill to take you to Thorin's. I have a Metalsmith (that guild is also there) and bought my house in the area so I could get there quickly when needed.

I think craft halls that have it all in one area are not found until later in the game. Moria's 21st Hall may be the first, though I am not sure on that.

Holy shazbak! It was only 1/2 page when I posted!

Esteldin has forges - are those not superior? (dunno) Ouch...

A Hunter can 'port to T's Gate, and you can use your milepost to get to Esteldin. The only other solutions are enough Rep w/ T's Hall to get their "return to TG" skill, or buy another milepost w/ Turbine Points.

Edit - As a followup to some of the above (the more recent ones, ahem), a non-Minstrel character can only play 2 (two) instruments by default - the lute, and either the horn or clarinet (which both suck as solo instruments). This is fixed by class ( http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Instruments ).

Instruments that a Woodworker makes are not playable by anyone - they are, essentially "weapons" that only a Minstrel can equip. Musical instruments (as you now know) are only available by purchasing them from a Bard.

Yet another missed opportunity, musician could have been a hobby. I have been having a lot of fun with it, but it would be nice to be able to play other instruments. If it were a hobby you could level up to use other instruments. Think about it, in the bree homestead there is a pavilion buy the store/bank. There could be neighborhood bands playing there, and none of them be bards.

My champion; the weapon-smith, is just getting to the dwarf quests/tasks in the lone lands, she should have the rep by the time she is done. My tinker is going to take a while though, she is just getting to the lone lands.

Any character can learn all the instruments, it just takes more effort if they are not a mini.

when I bought my house logic said to do just that, but I really liked the homes in Breeland homestead, While the milestones were on sale I was able to get one for one of my crafters, that need to jump between Est and MD, but I didn't get one that needs to go between Est and Thorins Hall.
Too bad you're only allowed to purchase one home per server, or I would have 2 more homes, in Thorins Gate, just for the short jog to Thorin's Hall on the 2 That need the superior forges there.
Got lucky when I made my Hunter the Weapon Smith, didn't know about the traveling they get when I started playing a hunter.

Yeah, the forum thing threw me for a loop too, At first I thought I wasn't logged in or something

A musical hobby would be cool, but many do it any ways even tho it's not a hobby in the game like fishing. Can't recall the server, but there is one where there are a couple Kinships just dedicated to playing music, and having musical events

I believe some instrument skills are now for sale at skirmish vendors.

A reasonably high level minstrel can potentially train you in any instrument but Pibgorn. I've never yet seen a mentoring skill for that one, although it may drop from a raid I haven't done. And if you've heard one, you may not want that one anyway!

Some will charge you for mentoring in an instrument; there's a 5 day cooldown on the skill, so some are unwilling to use it casually on anyone who asks. There are a few restrictions on you as well; I believe your character has to be level 30 to be able to play bagpipes, for instance.

All of which is to say that it's quite possible for any character of any class to learn pretty much any instrument she wishes to play and to make a hobby of playing either for others or simply for his own enjoyment.

    I'll check, thanks all.
My choices for instruments now is lute, horn, and clarinet; of my 4 characters. Be cool to have all 4 of my characters on at once just to have my own band lol

Unfortunately, You cant make band with your chars, since only one login per account is allowed. But having two accounts, you can run two LotROs at once, if you log in first char fully in game and then start a new LotRO, and if your Pc is capable of working with so much resources spend on two simultaneously open LotROs.

Minstrel mentoring, last time i checked, cost some money - not so problematic for high levels, but for new players scrapping 0.5 gold cost for single skill teaching page from NPC may be a problem, and askign minstrel to spend money in additionf his/her time to teach you feels a bit ... wrong?

Ps. More on travelling - if you join a kinship that has kinhouse, you get another travel to it - another waypoint. Of course, with homesteads not having stables to ride out from them, only Thorin's hall homestead allows easy travelling from it to other places.

Thank you, Turbine, for listening and giving us an opt-out of FE! Good work!

I don't think that it's not ''allowed'' (in the sense of the ToU), but that the software doesn't support it (by default). However, there are work-arounds - do a search for "two box" or "dual box" or "dual boxing" - apparently it's not hard if you have a good computer with a bunch of memory and some computer skillz.

Yes, thats what i was pointing at - but for dual-boxing you still need two accounts, since each account can be logged in only once. If you try log in same account for a second time, first one gets booted from servers. Since Manstan has all four chars on same account, he cant log two of them in at the same time.

Eh... not as I understand it, actually, no. One account, two (or more) characters is quite possible - just not without some work. (But there are other, more approp and complete threads that already fully discuss that.)

The basic minstrel mentoring skill costs nothing except some power and the 5 day cool down. This is for when a minstrel stands in front of you and casts the skill on you. Some minstrels will charge a fee because of that cool down, some won't.

There's a secondary skill which allows a minstrel to purchase an item for 250s which allows them to "record the instructions for learning an instrument." These are what you may occasionally see on the AH, usually for fancy prices to defray the cost of the parchment and the 7-10 day cool down on that skill (Can't remember exactly how long, it's awhile since I've bothered to make one).

Apart from those two methods, I believe some instrument skills are now available from skirmish vendors for varying amounts of Marks. If you go this route, be careful that you're buying the actual playing skill and not the mentoring skill which can only be used by a minstrel.

If you ask in a busy area on one of the chat channels, you'll likely find someone willing to mentor your characters.

If you are lucky, it upgrades same day. If you aren't, it will stay this way forever, or several months at least. If you are Turbine cleint from start, you also get better chances that if you migrated from Codemasters, my account still has same info as about the days when i did migrate over, and i cant see my characters or use the referral page due forum not liking my characters and my kinship.

What lotteries? I've read about them here and there but not a clue what it is all about. Seems like a high level VIP thing to me.

    No, it's a level-5-plus thing.

"This character has not been played recently. Log into them to give them a chance."

This is my main character, I run him daily. Yet I see check boxes for my characters..... ooooK. lol
I have no luck, if there is a 50/50 chance, I'm going to loose lol

That's a standard message that always appears. It only applies if you have a character with an asterisk beside it.

In order to enter, you have to click the checkbox--it's like buying a ticket IRL, but a lot cheaper. Like IRL, whether you win or not depends on chance and how many others have bothered to check the boxes. And given the vastly smaller pool of possible entrants, your chances of winning something here are far better than in most RL lotteries.

Thanks. I entered one but like I said I have no luck so I don't expect anything.

I'm still running in to problems with this loremaster. First she does more damage with her staff then most of her spells, you'd think it would be the opposite. And I can't seem to do much with the master crafting for scholar. Seems most of her recipes call for faded sindarian passages, which seem to be an extremely rare drop. As in I have dozens of the rest of the ingredients for the recipes, but no passages. Is there anyplace that these are a more frequent drop?

Still wondering about this character. I made her so I'd have a character to do scrolls and dyes, but the scrolls don't seem to be much of a help yet. Of the 5 craft journals she has made 1 worked; armor made by my hunter. Shes done 3 tailor journals and 2 weapons journals. The one that worked gave her an exquisite set of loose linen shoulder guards. Thing is these journals burn a lot of components and 1 is hard to come by, just to have them fail.

Scholars are something of a pain to level at first, especially if you don't have significantly higher level characters to send back the mats dropped by humanoid mobs. At every level up till Westfold, there's one scholar mat that's used in most recipes and is the scarcest drop.

Honestly, I almost never bother with craft journals and the single shot recipes they make. If your crafter is guilded, you can get guild recipes that give you the same results guaranteed. The guild recipes require a large guild rep item (whatever the item is for the craft--those dishcloth things for tailors) instead of the the craft journal.

Making dyes is a bit more expensive in that you have to buy some vendor items to make each dye, but it doesn't require your scarce mats. Thus it can be an easier way to level the craft. Having her in the scholars' guild will also be handy here; there are guild recipes that give you 5 dyes at a time instead of just one. The guild recipe for black dye is the only way you can be guaranteed of getting black. Otherwise it's just a crit from making rust dye.

Agreed that LMs are a bit of a pain at first. They do get considerably better as you go along. At level 30, you get the lynx pet and that will help a lot with your killing speed. Mine is only level 48 still, but she's coming along quite nicely. Her lynx is like sending a mini-burglar out to do half her killing for her. Her skills still have fairly long inductions, so fights can take awhile, but the skills do a good bit more damage now. Using her debuffs and crowd control, she and her lynx can take on yellow and orange mobs and walk away from the fights.

Lotteries, dont expect to win a lot, but from time to time you may get lucky, plus there sometimes are fun lotteries when almost everyone wins some small but nice stuff.

On Crafting, yes, for a scholar, every tier has some problematic ingredient, that you should conserve and use sparingly. Sindarin passage drop from Bree dungeons (it has tier 2 and tier 3 nodes, tier 3 is what you look for) and from the wights and skeletons there, so you can do both the long killing deeds ( 300 spiders, wights etc) and get some good mats along with it.

About the crafting journals, by no way, dont trust that only a jouurnal will help you - you should try get best critted tool you can wield too, that also imptroves chances for a crit. Forgot, if you have metalsmith, that makes these, if you do not, then you have to ask around in /trade channel for a help. Like - basic tool adds 0% crit chance, but the tier 3 critted tailor tool gives +8% chance: http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Tailor's_Tools Same with other crafting tools too.

Next comes Crafting lore scrolls, that also increases crit chances for 3,5% at tier 3: http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Crafting_Lore_Index . Be warned, they are only 1 minute, so when you craft with using some of these, then open them right before final crafting, when all the rest - tools, whorspace, ingredients - is ready to be used.

So before we start calculate other bonuses, we got 11.5% increase already.

Then add the yournal for +35% (i think) and you got 46,5% chances for a crit. still, may take you luck on first hit, or you may have to use up several of these.

PS. When you craft these journals, try for a crit there too, then you may by chances get 2 for a price of one.

Thank you, Turbine, for listening and giving us an opt-out of FE! Good work!

That's what bites, I have 3 character that have been through the barrows and only came up with 9 passages. I even put two of them back through to come up with those 9. Did come up with a bunch of higher level components though.

I've been neglectful of my crafting guilds, I really need to spend some time working them up. But it seems like a lot of hoha for little reward right now.

There just seems to be too much to buy that I would benefit from. Extra milestones, extra packs, quests, rare drop recipes, crafting tools ect. Right now my TP is limited to the 2K I have plus what I can deed. Seems most everything is 400 to 800 TP so those few things for 1 character would eat it up fast, and I have 4 characters.

But it does seem the fastest easiest way to level up my scholar is to farm dye ingredients and make dyes. Which seems strange for a scholar.

Not entirely true - with the right recipe(s), you can go the dye/paint route, using Farmer to provide most of the material, and resell to vendors for not too much loss of coin. (If you can resell on the AH, you might even break even or better).

But if you're only trying to level with the standard drop mat's and Basic recipes, yes, slow and painful.

Iorvinas in Lone Lands is a very nice spot for tier 3 scholar nodes, but be prepared to encounter a lot of other people farming there
    (=> http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Antique_Vase)

One great aspect of the scholar profession is a rather fast kindred with the elves of rivendell since you can just stand there and craft reputation items without leaving elronds libary.

Did you finish barrow deeds( the ones that ask for kill 150 and 300 spiders, wights etc. That will take a lot of time)? If you did that and get just 9 pages, its definitelyt looks that RNG hates you. By way, only scholar benefits from extra nodes there,if your chars there were different professions, then 9 seems a bit low,but believable amount for a char. I was thinking of a scholar going there, both killing and getting nodes.

About the stuff you buy with TPm, try to prioritize. Eg,:
Questpacks - try get them when they are on a discount. Even if its not something you will go right now, but if it gets 30% price reduction, or like Great river sale for 50% off, get them while they are cheap. This is only one i would say - buy immediately as you see a good sale. But keep around 500TP reserved - Great River will be on 50% off sale in near future.
Milestones - too wait for a discount. You can also work on kindred rep with Men of Bree, to get 'Return to Bree' for your non-human chars. From Bree, all other starter points is 1 silver ride away.
Virtue/race/class slots unlocks - thats what eating your TP in great amounts. Biggest 'TP thief',if can so be named. If you could go VIP for a month, these will go away... But only if you can do that.
Crafting tools - you will be better off buying these in AH, or asking in /TRADE channel.
Rare drop recipes - again check AH regularly.
Extra ingredients - again, first try get them yourself (seach for shard droppers and do repeatable quests that give shards as reward), then AH.

Thank you, Turbine, for listening and giving us an opt-out of FE! Good work!

Don't waste TP on stuff you can get in-game, like the recipes and crafting tools.

That sounds good, but some recipes don't drop. I've had to buy an armor recipe here and there simple because running 4 characters if I haven't got it, I probably wont get it in a drop.
And just how many times am I going to get that pea green wall paint recipe? I swear I get two or three per character per run.

Just ran through the north part of the barrows; yet again, and didn't get 1 passage. Went through all the crypts. I can understand some components being rare but these are practically extinct. A real PITA when they are absolutely necessary for so many of the recipes for that level. So my choices are too keep running my characters through the barrows; there is also a couple places in the lone lands, or spend half a day farming to get the ingredients to make the dyes of that level.
