Thread: Dx10 hardware shadows look like junk, create fuzzy lines everywhere

There is a clear rectangular box around me but outside of that nearly everything is fuzzy on the ground with dx10 hardware shadows turned on any setting (I isolated it to this). I wouldn't mind so much if it was everywhere (even though it looks funky) but when you move around it is jarring because there is a clear boundary where everything suddenly starts looking like fuzzy lines that moves along with you. I can turn dx10 hardware shadows off but then the nice tree shadows disappear.

I put in a little red arrow to show where the boundaries occur, this occurs pretty much all the time unless I turn dx10 shadows off (but mostly during the daytime near ruins tiles). This is a dx11 card so it should support it. Drivers up to date etc.

DX10 has always been terrible, its like the windowsME edition of DX, just avoid it IMO

I have this exact same issue as well. I have a GTX680 running the 310.10 drivers and even tried an earlier driver that was packed on the CD that came with it. I can't recall what version that was and am not at home yet to look it up either. I have yet to try the newer beta driver 310.24 but I'm gonna take a guess at it'll still be a problem. I'll try it eventually though since there's other issues I'm noticing as well that I need to further examine involving interior rooms.

I do go DX11 but skipping this DX10 dynamic shadow option really makes the shadowing in the game look not that great. For now I suffer through this issue so I can see the much better shadowing from trees and much more. As long as I stick more around the forests and swamps and less around the ruins, I don't notice it so much. On the other hand disabling the dynamic shadows, for me, leaves the game with an emptier feel. Even with ambient occlusion on it just doesn't fill the void of dynamic shadows.

I also got around to checking what driver version I used off the CD, version 300.83. As for the latest beta drivers I still haven't got around to the 301.24. And reading my prior post of this thread I totally botched the version numbers... 310? it's in the 301 range...

Overall, it would be nice to find a solution for this issue. I just don't know of a solution other than disabling DX10 Dynamic Shadows or disabling the High Quality Lighting checkbox. For me, the High Quality Lighting will also get rid of this issue but also gets rid of a lot of other candy as well.

Yes, FatKat is right, there are no dx11 shadows other than ambient occlusion, if you want those nice tree shadows you have to turn on dx 10 dynamic shadows but as FatKat said while in the ruins it is incredibly annoying during the daytime due to the fuzzy rendering errors/artifacts.

Here is an example of the tree shadows that are removed when dx 10 dynamic shadows are disabled.

I wish Turbine took the time and dug into the engine. It's obviously a mess after all those years. Like my problem with corrupted distant textures they don't even want to look at because obviously I haven't tried all the stuff I already did.

Well it's been that way from day 1 when it was implimented. And turbine involve with coding/technical issue will not respond. Just turn it off if you don't like MS broken DX10 features... I had to once I gotten my gtx680 and latest drivers, funny my other games don't exhibit this issue.

I've been talking to support over my problem with corrupted textures for past week and am really scared I will be told "it's working as intended" or "it's not a problem on our end of the line" in the end.

edit: Man I would gladly pay for an "expansion" which only addressed bugs in both the game and the client. By addressed I mean fixed in proper way.

I have the same problems, running a geforce 470 gtx. I doubt Turbine will do anything against it.
It's really annoying and destroys the atmosphere of the game.....

I seem to have pretty much the same issue, and I've tried drivers ranging from 275.x to 301.24 on my GTX 560 Ti.

However, my card is also having similar issues (heavily banded shadows, moire patterns in shadows) as well as texture flickering in other games (Mainly Tera, Minecraft, GW2 Beta and Mass Effect 1/2) - so as a slightly offtopic question, do any of the rest of you who are having these issues with DX10 shadows in LOTRO also have similar issues in other games?

I am having the exact same problem, Geforce GTX 560 Ti, Driver version: 301.42 & windows 7 64bit.

I find it riduculously insultive towards the customers Turbine refuses to even acknowledge the existance of this bug.

I've had this same, annoying problem for a very long time. It's really obvious which particular setting is causing this; please fix this.
