I was bored last night, so I made a little tool that compares a character's stats against all others from the same class and level that have used the site before. Right now, it's not very 'smart' as it doesn't have a lot of records in the database, but that will improve the more it gets used. So please, have a look, plug in all your toons and spread the word.
Interesting concept, hope to see more use it, I like that its totally anonymous too so no elitism from it.
One improvement I would like to see though is the drop down box for choosing server defaults back to brandywine every time, would be nice if it stayed on your previous choice, makes entering multiple alts from the same server easier
I was able to run it for all my toons and I came up pretty much average. But, my champ came out behind the average for a few things. I've always suspected that he should be a little bit stronger, so your tool tipped me off to what I should start drilling down on to improve him a bit.
So yeah, great job. One minor thing--just echoing the input above to have the drop-down menu stay at the last choice instead of resetting to Brandywine server.
I tried entering a couple of my characters, on WithyWindle and I just get my character info:
Same for Birgit, and Eldegar ( not mine but other Burglar on Withy)
EDIT: Tried in Firefox and it worked. Was using IE 8 before. Might just be an issue with the PC i am using atm.
Would love to see triats stats added, can be done either rather simply by giving % for each of your traits, show the rate of same class same level characters that have that trait.
Or potentially a more complicated version where you compare the selected trait combos per group, ie. X% have the same virtues, Y% have the same class traits and so on for race and legendary.
So please, have a look, plug in all your toons and spread the word.
Thank you for a funny tool
There is one big drawback: some of the average values are very missleading.
An example: vitality and might for guardians and wardens.
The reason: these classes in their dps builds have ridiculously* low vitality and high might, this screws the average numbers quite a bit. OP guards also have 0 block, which makes the average value for this class unbelievably low (about 4k block across almost 100 guards when I was checking).
For dps classes it seems to give a reasonable picture though as they don't change gear that much.
*ridiculously from the point of view of the tanking build of course
Nice little tool, +rep. Two features I'm left hoping for:
1. ICPR. Would love to see how I compare with that too, if the data is possible to extract.
2. Different builds, especially with tanks, lead to the average being misleading. I guess guardians could be easily(?) separated into two classes by whether they are using a shield (i.e. have any block), but wardens would likely be more difficult.
Also, don't feel bad if you rank below average. Remember that the people using this tool and who the average is based on are forum-actives with a great interest in character development; i.e. the "average" is very likely above average.
I'm assuming you're taking the values from the character sheets from my.lotro.com
So unfortunately we won't be able to see ICPR, ICMR, Masteries, etc.
However, since you have the main stats (might, vitality, etc.), you could apply the formulas to calculate the missing stats. Though that won't be entirely accurate because of items which increase the missing stats directly. For that you'll have to use the lorebook links and stuff

Nice tool, but yeah, I can already tell the results are real out of whack due to things like different builds and logging out with buffs, etc.
Also, to people worried that they're "below average"...don't worry about it! In my experience, the "average" champion probably has way more morale/vit than me in my DPS gear, driving up the averages for those stats, but they probably hit like wet noodles, so it doesn't bug me too much.
Thanks a bunch for all the positive feedback. I wanted to answer a couple of questions from this thread the best I can.
Unfortunately, there is a very limited subset of character data that you can access using the lotro API. Really all you can get is what is currently in the stat checker tool and worn gear (armor, jewelry, etc). So, as much as I would love to do something similar for virtues, that data is not available.
Someone brought up the point that the averages could be kind of wonky for classes that spec in two different directions, e.g. an OP guard vs. a defensive guard. Yep. Perhaps I may get tricky someday and look at the worn gear and try to spilt these classes into sub-types and only compare your toon against the correct sub-type. Doubtful though
The charts are generic Google charts, so I assume they would work in IE, but I don't use it so your mileage may vary.
I'm wondering if a similar compilation of the most frequently worn gear by slot per class & level would be helpful. At the upper levels the armor selection is fairly limited, but it might be useful for jewelry. What do you think?
Also, does anyone know for certain if the data being pulled from the lotro api includes temporary buffs on your character at log off time? From my tests, it does not appear to, but I'm not 100% on that.
Anyhow, thanks again and I'm glad you enjoy using the stat checker.

P.S. -- The server should stay selected on your last choice now.

The site is still a work in progress, so things may change unexpectedly.
+ rep to you. This is WAY Cool. I wish I knew how to do stuff like this when I'm bored. I usually just end up watching a movie. LOL

Excellent job!
I agree. I like that it's anonymous. My build suits me but wouldn't work for others I'm sure. I like to see how my character stands up to everyone else though. Actually I was kind of shocked that I didn't totally suck. I play solo so I went heavy on the morale / vitality as that seems to work well for me. I found that my morale, power and vitality were higher than average. My armour, fate, will, parry and resistance were even steven. My Might was slightly lower than average and my critical hit was A lot lower than average. Not too surprised by my critical hit although I haven't been having problems given my play style. What surprised me was my finesse. It was a LOT higher than average. I play solo! Do I even need finesse? Is it needed in solo skirms or no?

I had a problem using IE7 but Mozilla Firefox worked great! Wish this worked better with internet explorer but it is still a pretty cool tool.
My level 10 Captain is pretty much identical to her peers - which makes sense, because there's not much opportunity for diversification in those first 10 levels.
Out of my other four characters, two did really well compared to the average, in pretty much all respects, while the other two are apparently quite lousy... (The graphs look pretty much like staircases - the difference between my results and the average is about the same as that between the best results and the average - only in the opposite direction.)
I do wonder what to make of this - I would understand if I got a low score in some places, then a higher score in other places: then I'd be optimizing for the wrong (or at least: unpopular) stats. However, I just seem to have 'less' in all respects on two characters, and 'more' on two others.
I don't pay that much attention to optimizing anything, so I wasn't surprised about the two characters who didn't do so well, but the other two being best for their class (out of three, I think, nothing statistically relevant) does have me a bit puzzled.
(For those who are curious, my characters are in my profile, so you can check for yourself.)
It works, and quite nicely too. Needs more people using it though, being compared to just three people isn't quite the comparison I'd hope for (especially as I always seem to be around the highest or around the lowest).
Also, am I correct that it purposely ignores level 1 characters?
I've a level 41 Champion, a level 18 Guardian, and a level 13 Hunter, all with one to three people to compare against (I think the one meant I was the only one, all stats were the same for my Hunter). I get the idea that this is more useful as your level goes higher, especially at level 75.
