One time I entered a battle field close to TR. Freeps and Creeps where standing there without fighting. Only a few of them where doing a 1v1. A quite clear setup.
Most of the time you see freeps and creeps killing each other in groups of two or more also a clear setup.
But sometimes it is not that clear. You see one freep and one creep fighting without others hanging around or helping out. If I see the two fighting my reaction will be jump in and help the fellow creep killing the freep a.s.a.p. After all that how a freeps life should be. Short!
Question: is there a way to recognize if you are helping out a fellow player or disturbing a 1v1?
Sometimes. It used to be that candy mountain was the main spot for 1v1.
Maybe watch the fight for a few seconds- a good fight is fun to watch and if some on adds then jump in. Eventually you may recognize some players who do seek and prefer 1v1s when they can get them.
And there are also a few things that might be kinda obvious- a 1v1 next to a contested keep- probably not a good idea. 1v1 near a rez circle also not a good idea.

Seriously though, the answer is you don't know. You'll eventually pick up on who the "1v1ers" are. Personally, I don't interfere if I come across two people fighting, whoever they are.
There are quite a few players who enjoy primarily solo fights but the fact of the matter is if it is not on CM I don't expect people to respect it. It is always a pleasant surprise when they do, however.

If its a close fight I will consider not jumping in
But if I see a godmoding Freep destroying a Creep 1 vs 1...I will not hesitate to assist in sending the ezmoder to the graveyard
Are we really supposed to just watch unskilled or low ranked Creeps get farmed by Minis or Champs ?
I think not

It really depends on the players Laskai, once you get to know who is likely to be soloing and who isn't it makes deciding to jump in or not alot easier.
Whether you gank 1v1s independantly of that is entirely up to you, there is a big divide in opinion between the main 1v1'rs and raiders. Both have their valid points but either way it comes down to whatever you feel like doing at the time

Question: is there a way to recognize if you are helping out a fellow player or disturbing a 1v1?
Simply, no. What I find is that most of the true 1v1ers won't care if a fight gets interrupted; its to be expected. They will likely stop attacking and let their opponent do with you as they please. I guess a safe way to play it would just be to not enter a fight you aren't prepared to lose.
Anyone whose respect is worth earning won't bother you for whichever action you choose.
One of the few things I dislike about coming over to play on E is the 1v1's. I'll be wondering along and see a couple freeps and creeps around GTA, CoT and sometimes PTR so I jump in on the action only for the creeps to stop fighting and watch me die...I don't get that. If you want to 1v1 go to cm!

derp dont lose after jumping into a 1v1? or take a second and assess the situation and fix your derp. your call.
If you 1v1, you just have to expect to die to zergs and lurking ezmode wargs often and without reason. There's always a creep or freep who cares for nothing more than moving the yellow bar to the right. Sometimes situations just happen where you can't tell, but what really matters is if you finish off the opponent. I ran into Grizlark attacking some nearly dead freep who looked like they were running for their life, was told it was a 1v1, stopped. Watched them start fighting again, then the creep zerg poured out of the wood work and killed both of us freeps. You can't care about dying at least as a squishy.
And never ever expect a creep or freep will 1v1 you. I can't count the number of times I've seen "soloers" jump for a 1v1, then get pounced by their warg friend or bubbled by their WL friend standing by. If you get a clean/fair 1v1 where your opponent doesn't brand up, run for the hills, or call in mappers, just consider yourself lucky. If you get someone using their brand against you, just consider yourself good enough that they are scared to fight you without their brand. You've basically won before the fight even started even if the renown/infamy ticks off their head in the end. In the end, rank doesn't mean a whole lot anymore since it does nothing for freeps, and creeps can purchase skills.
OP:
This question comes up every-so-often, and the answer is this: there is no one way to play that will make everyone on both sides happy. Even amongst the people who prefer to 1v1 and/or respect 1v1s, there are exceptions to their normal behavior. Play in a way that you find fun, think is fair, and makes sense to you. You will step on someones toes. It happens.

The only officially non-official designated 1v1 area is Candy Mountain. Anywhere outside you 1v1 at your own risk. Both sides know this when they attempt a 1v1. In today's moors it's just how it is.
There is some respect in the moors though. Like Swash said if you're out enough you will ID those that are down with the 1v1 anywhere and will risk being zerged for a good fight.

Stubi can you please teach me how to hack the game coding? It sounds like a useful skill to have.
Come into my cave master dwarf and I shall show you things which will blow your mind.
I see you taught Mongoe how to Triple Pledge
