Not Black Screen Crash, altogether different crash

Let me preface this post by saying I have read as much as I could find on the black screen crash issue going back several years. I have also read any sticky threads regarding crashes, symptoms, remedies and such. Having said that, the crashes I am experiencing have been altogether different.

My computer can remain on and dormant for days at a time with no issue at all, then if I choose to play LOTRO, within two hours it will crash and need a hard reboot. I have no picture, no sound, nothing. (Let it be noted here that the loss of everything could very well be connected to me using HDMI connection for video and sound, though I am not positive of this.)
This has been happening since the fist of the year and a bit more frequently of late. I have attempted to roll back my video card drivers to previous versions and that did nothing. I have even loaded the newest drivers from Nvidia which came out at the end of last month and still no difference. I've changed the speed of the cards, changed the graphics level in game, (run at lowest possible) every thing I could possibly think of with no difference. I wanted very much to solve the issue without posting a new thread here because I'm not sure the problem I'm getting is different than the others. I simply have not seen anyone comment that they are using the HDMI hookup and having the crash issue.

    Thanks for any help

Post a reply to the thread and use the directions in the "how to get help" sticky in my sig, they detail how to post a dxdiag using the code tags (it was too large combined with the text in your original post in this case I'd guess).

Re: Not Black Screen Crash, altogether different crash

Just some basic question, Could it be heat you got alot of top end items, have you got a temp monitor to keep a bit of an eye on it ?.

Are you playing the game when it crashing or afk at the time ?

Do other games run fine for hour+

If yes to afk above do you leave other games idel for long times & there fine ?

Power issues again alot of items needs alot of decent power ? question above might help notice this.

Im thinking its might not come out of sleep propper if you leave it afk wile in a dx game & mmo games are the only type of games we tend to leave the system inactive for long times, crafing waiting for team ect or heat or power issues after a time.

Re: Not Black Screen Crash, altogether different crash

I'll answer as best I can.
Yes, I have a digital thermometer running and on desktop idle it runs around 68-71 degrees. During gameplay it may hit 80, but not for long. I had this setup in a mid-tower and the cooling was insufficient, so I got a full size tower with much better cooling on it, and it has since done much better.

The game crashes while I am playing, usually when my char is active in some way, riding a horse, killing orcs, etc. If I'm just standing around crafting, it seems less likely to crash.

The only other game I play on here is Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Awakenings and I have not had any problem with them. Though I believe LOTRO's graphics are more intense than DAO.

My cards are almost four years old now and have suffered heat issues with the old case, so it's possible they have some lingering problems. I plan to get a new pair soon and see if that helps at all.

I'm getting lots of crashes and lockups also. I think since update 6. They had to have done something because I never used to crash before.

omg that sounds so hot to me man but im a bit outta touch on current items & there heat, my old system idels at 25 degree c & 30 underload.

I assume with the case change you give the vid card & cpu fans a nice clean up & the fans are all running ok ?.

DAO is a lovly game a man, I still havent got over Morri & Leliana propper & been a long time.

Since your playing when it crashes we could discount it going to sleep but sometimes since your ingame the mouse movent dos not count as activity but for now lets assume it isnt going to sleep issue.

Next lets work out how bad its crashed if its just black screen or has the system totaly crashed.

You maybe already know & id like to know how you shut the PC down once it has crashed. I go over some bits anyways, next time it crashes try turning Num Lock on & off that only works with an active cpu unlike say capt lock. So if num lock light goes on & off fine the system is still active under the black screen so we can look to the vid cards maybe the setup there in & even still sleep modes with hdmi. if it is only a black screen you can exit the game & shut down with alt-f4 & enter a few times if nothing or just press the power button once but dont hold it in, that should tell windows to shutdown propperly & if its just a blackscreen sleep mode issue your probly wake it up as it goes for shutdown screens.

If the system is totaly inactive/crashed force it off by holding the power button in for maybe 10 secounds & then your probly looking at a hardware error, heat, power or even memory. The heat fromt he cpus/vid cards maybe heating up other items also, im feeling heat since it goes off wile your active playing.

You are referencing degrees celcius, I was using degrees fahrenheit. 25 degrees celcius is 77 degrees fahrenheit. We are running very similar temperatures.

Yes. I cleaned up the vid cards very nicely, and the new case came with a 250mm intake fan on the side, 1 140mm intake in front, 1 140mm intake fan on the other side to cool the cpu, 1 120mm exhaust fan in the back of the case, and 2 120mm exhaust fans on top of the case. In addition, the larger case made for more room inside allowing better air flow throughout to better keep things cool.

Yeah, it's been a while for me as well. I still keep the game on this computer and play every so often, but not as much as I used to.

Each time so far that it has happened, I have done a hard reboot, (holding power button down until power shuts off, then power up again).

I will give the Num Lock a try next time it happens. I played the game today and was very surprised that I played four hours without crashing. The next time I have this type of crash, I'll try this and see what happens, and post my results here.

This is how I have done it every time so far, and I'm of similar thinking regarding the heat issue.

    Thanks for your responses

Re: Not Black Screen Crash, altogether different crash

From what I read, that's usually a cpu, or bios problem. This site claims the error occurs in the cpu cache
    http://mikemstech.blogspot.com/2011/...-hardware.html
..so, it's PROBABLY, on the motherboard, although google has one listing for a video driver and another for a combined out-of-date bios and harddrive failure.

Maybe, look in Device Manager for warning symbols, and if a device has a 'Test' button, see if it passes. Another thing is run Windows 'Rate My Hardware' service and see if video, etc. get a good grade. But, it may boil down to updating bios or chipset drivers. For that, I highly recommend making a drive image before updating motherboard stuff.

OP, i'd recommend you to test your system with FurMark. Put it on max settings and leave for 30-40 mins(but keep your eye on temperatures)
The other idea is that you using sli. Try to disable it and test lotro for crashes.
And the last idea, it might be all up to your OS, maybe you need to reinstall it.

To be honest i have some crashes too, but it more like because of windows 8. Have win7 installed on other HDD, and it works perfectly, with no crashes\laggs. So maybe in last few days your system downloaded some update from windows update.

    Also try to stop firewalls\antiviruses

Some food for thought. I've thought about the SLI issue, just haven't done anything about it yet. I had not even given any thought to an issue with OS, thanks, I'll investigate that. The other one I think has merit could be the av, even tho I use a quad core cpu, and there shouldn't be an issue with playing the game while checking for av updates, it just might be causing problems.

Re: Not Black Screen Crash, altogether different crash

Still no crash yet to tell how badly you have crashed ?

I wouldnt go rushing into to many changes at once, reason that its nice to know what caused it not just get it fixed.

OS wise any NT based system should manage an error or BSOD unless your hardware is the issue so dont rush into reinstalls & at this point it only seems to be LOTRO. The programming imo of lotro is sub par so id deffo go along with SLI use issues ect even try lower setting of direct X but again crash wise id only expect that to be software lvl so your at a black screen but the system may well be active so thats what we realy wanna know right now. Check your website for mainboard for any decent fixes in your bios but dont rush into that also unless you know it well its a far step to reach from a single game falling over.

Not seen much feedback from Turbine support yet have we ?
