Question Crashing on game exit since U6

Iv started crashing when I close the game since U6, Iv seen one other person say the same in another post about general crashing since U6 but preffer not to mix issues.

I do also suffer the crashing in U5 orthanc gravenwood ect & mute my sound to avoid it. ill have to try muting sound maybe on exit. Iv been sending the microsoft error each time since U5 you would think Turbine would have sorted that one by now but then again even the Dragon aint had a fix & is a very major item.

So try not to confuse this error with others pls its crash on exit nothing else, not randome crash on landscape or wile entering areas & pls noone link the win32 mem fix but by all means have a rant about other bugs & lack of fixing.

What would realy help Turbine imo is if someone there actually played the game & patch there install like real players do. They could also play the dragon raid, maybe even that person would have botherd to check there virtue icons ?. I mean icons were did the icon dude go hes noraly got far to much time on his hands messing with perfectly good icons just to annoy people now his chance to shine & he drops the ball. Still he has been busy to be fair U6 has a ton of nice new icons but the virt's did only need 13 & 14 text added & im shure hes got a template for each, being the icon master. I guess he needs to drag some work out a bit but why not leave something like scroll cases for later & noone would even notice.

Re: Crashing on game exit since U6

I had the same issue since Update 6. Exit game after having played my character, will cause a crash and thus my audio/video settings do not save.

Trying to find a way to resolve this I logged into the game only until Character Selection screen. So not loading any character. From there I fixed my audio/video settings and then without loading a character I exited the game from character selection. It closed normally. Now I am able to load a character and exit the game without crashing.

I have the same issue. Lyzau, I understand the process you describe, but what "fix" to your sound settings did you make once you got to the character screen? Thanks

Not really "fixed" anything other than that I adjusted the sliders to my taste (I turn combat sounds off and lower the volume of UI, music and player music. I leave the others at full). I think I also ticked the box for "mute game sounds" but I'm not 100% sure about that. I tick that box every time I have to load an instanced zone because it really helps to prevent crashes. Sometimes when I zone in/out an area I forget to tick that box and crash.

In any case with the crash-upon-game-exit my audio settings would never save and I would start the game with the default settings every time. Now by not playing my character but exiting the game from the character select screen the game didn't crash and retained my settings.

Re: Crashing on game exit since U6

    Gentlefolk,

Since the patch, whenever I leave the game (either from the character selection screen or from a specific character while in the game) the screen goes black (the mouse remains active, though). If I wait a long time (more than 10-15 min) windows will eventually tell me the program has stopped responding. Ctrl-alt-delete to end the task also works. I don't have any problem getting in to the game, and don't have any problems while in the game, only when exiting the game. I do have a warden, but the problem occurs no matter which character I attempt to leave the game from, and also from the character selection screen regardless of which character is currently selected.

Windows Vista, 32bit. Four characters (hunter, warden, minstrel and rune keeper).

Again, the problem began when the patch came out.

Posted this in general and was told to post here. This thread seems to be covering the same problem, as experienced by others. I will try fiddling with sound settings and exiting without entering the game when I get home tonight.

Re: Crashing on game exit since U6

I tried the method above - I logged in to the character selection screen - made a minor adjustment (in my case, I turned up game volume a smidge) then accepted the change. I exited out of the game at that point, without loading any characters. I then restarted, logged in and began playing. I just now logged out after playing on all of my toons, and it exited perfectly.

    Thanks for the help.

    This guy would agree..
The error code (0xc0000005) usually is associate with a driver problem,
    quite often sound.

Edit: Btw, I found a 2003 post that claimed it also occurs when moving large chunks of memory on a limited-ram machine..either way,I see it as a Windows thing...not lotro.

I have the same problem, started with update 6, client crashes everytime I exit LOTRO.
The hotfix did nothing to improve the situation.

I play mostly in the moors and I cannot turn off game sounds as I would never hear those pesky freeps horse hoofs comming up behind me.

I've noticed that many of posted above using windows vista. Not in vain that ppl doesnt like vista. I had some experience while repearing different pcs, and this OS is huge bunch of problems by itself, even with SP2. Im not saying your crashes comes because of vista, but this might be one of the reasons why it happens. About everybody else who is crashing: I've been playing few mmo games and always on forums ppl were asking how to fix crashes, and one thing i noticed, all who were crashing were using 32 bit system, so crashes were comming because of limitation of 2gbs\application.
To enable the 3GB switch on Windows Vista™ or Windows 7:
Right-click Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
At the command prompt, enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072"
    Restart the computer.
    To disable the 3GB switch:
Right-click on Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
At the command prompt, enter "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa"
    Restart the computer.

warning: you doing all these steps on you own, no responsibility on me or anybody else

if anybody interested, i have some ideas how to solve crashes, send me a PM

Im using Winxp & aware of ram limitatons.

I do recall this once long ago with lotro but i cant recall the fix, I found I had oldUserPreferences.ini so I must have done the reset settings at some point, ill try it again & report back & here is the link to support page for it.

Still a shame Turbine dont seem to have any propper anwsers on almost any issue after making changes to the app.

This is still going on for me just get bored posting about it. Changing chars before you exit can help sometimes but its more hassel then just clicking the error send.

AW: Crashing on game exit since U6

Bump. Still not solved. Crash is clearly dependant on visited zones (old ones work better) and game time (play longer = get more crashes).

I have to disagree with you. Since U6, I've had this issue too and I crash nearly every time that I exit regardless of zone. Lately, I've been exiting from the vault areas in Bree, Thorin's, & the Shire as well as some new characters from the starter areas and Comb. They all crash on exit regardless of time played - 15 minutes or two hours, I crash.

Cool Re: Crashing on game exit since U6

Have to agree that problem was not fixed in last patch or maintenance. I have had problems since Update 6 and I am now dreading U7!!!

Using Windows 7 32-bit on a dual core desktop - sorry not sure on spec but know it plays other MMORPGs fine. Anyway almost every time I exit the game it goes to black screen and I need to hitctrl-alt-del to get task manager. Finally the LOTRO client not responding message and Windows checking for solution boxes come up - as other people have said. After I have clicked those boxes the game slowly 'unloads' according to Task Manager - although Windows 7 can be slow exiting Firefox as well at that stage.

Generally have bad lag in Bree as well (and did have other glitches like stable horses hitching up) and problem was so bad on Brandywine that resorted to playing on Dwarrowdelf. During Anniversary event - when Bree at its worst - it was proving better although still exit prob. Last night however, Dwarrowdelf was laggy and for first time since patch, stable horse hitched up BUT that may be because of the server wide Galloping Gala event. Also wife on a quad core desktop with W7 64-bit had problems with lag and exiting. Could server overload contribute to problems?

Going to check on changing sound setup as suggested. Hopefully that will do something.

Thumbs up Re: Crashing on game exit since U6

    My 2 cents on this:
*Purely related to crash on exit game*
I have 6 WinXP 32bit SP3 machines of variying hardware. AMD and NVIDIA video both.
All 6 consistently crash on exit of game. In a extremely rare instance one might not.
The one thing they all have in common is full screen mode.
The game appears to me to be crashing when it goes out of full screen mode prior to normal shutdown.
You see the game window close and then some flashes of some dialogs I can't quite make out, then black, pause, then the submit the bug report box.
I have played with muting audio and changing settings to no avail (by modify the ini file since in game settings not working)
But, and here is the big maybe, I changed the full screen off and use window mode (ugh I know, that nasty border) ; however, when I exit and log out - no more crash on exit! I will be testing this on each machine, so if you want to try, here is the exact one thing to change:
In the ini file, change 'FullScreen=True' to 'FullScreen=False'
If that stops your crash on exit, let us know.
I will test this and report back. I post this more for diagnostic info for Turbine programmers. I will use full screen and just deal with the crash, but good to know if this pin points an issue.
    Regards

An add to this (after reading the next post) I get the crash on all machines even when the in game full screen resolution matches the desktop. I've had some time to read some other posts on this and it really looks like a GDI problem coming out of full screen mode. So far I have not been able to crash on exit when exiting in windowed mode.

Re: Crashing on game exit since U6

Out of two desktops and one laptop in this household being played from, only one of the desktops is having this problem. The ONLY time the game has ever crashed is every single time the game is exited while logged in to any character, whether it be 10 hours or 10 seconds played.

For all troubleshooting purposes, I verified the following:
    - Crash occurred on any character in any location when exiting the game
    - To limit possible variables, all tests and changes were all performed on the same character
    - To reduce load times for quicker testing, the character was inside The Last Homely House in Rivendell and did not move more than a few steps if I moved at all
    - All 3rd party plugins were removed

After trying various things, the only two times the game exited normally without a crash is
1: When desktop resolution matches game resolution
2: When removed from Full Screen before exiting

For step 1, I just changed resolution to match what I had the game set to, and launched, loaded character, and exited game. No problems! Changing resolution to anything not matching the game re-introduced the crash. Sadly the desktop this is occurring on does not have the best graphics card, so changing game to match desktop resolution is not an option.

For step 2, I just ran with Xeteco's suggestion. A difference is that I disabled full screen in the game, not the ini, because if the game exited without crashing, it would save the change anyway. Here's the odd part - it exited without crashing. Then I loaded into the same character again, reenabled Full Screen and accepted changes, then exited the game. Again, it exited without crashing. Loaded in again to verify one more time, exited without a crash. I touched absolutely nothing else whatsoever other than disabling full screen and exiting, then enabling it and exiting.

For those thinking the obvious, that the graphical changes were accepted and saved properly this time versus not being saved previously because it crashed on exit... well, sorry. Wish it was that simple. I had previously modified the graphical settings in different ways including resolution and exiting from the character selection screen, then reloading to verify it saved the settings before loading a character and exiting the game.

Exclamation Re: Crashing on game exit since U6

Okay, I have tried un-check 'Full Screen' accept/yes etc and then exit game.
So long as that is not checked the game exits to desktop just fine.
I have not been able to get it to exit without crashing while that box is checked.
Doing this makes the problem go away on 6 very different XP Pro SP3 boxes with both amd and nvidia gpu's.

    Dear Turbine Development:
Sorry, I just hope you actually get the opportunity to browse the forums once in a while!
It would seem to this programmer that all that needs to be done to make a quick band-aid here is to do the same GDI switch that is being made when that checkbox is cleared right after the user confirms exit of game. Do not change the setting the user has chosen, simply make the GDI switch and quit as normal.
    Regards

    Update: 5-20-2012
I have been checking the windows application event logs and they have been loggin this crash on exit. All of the events are:
Faulting application lotroclient.exe, version 3.7.0.8037, faulting module lotroclient.exe, version 3.7.0.8037, fault address 0x004b1bf3.
A workaround: When you are ready to exit the game, Hold the Alt key for a second and tap the Tab key - this should put you at the desktop. Then right click the minimized lotro client on the toolbar and select close.
NOTE: This exits the game and by-passes the crash. Interesting.

LOTRO crashes on application exit for months now...

I see that this issue has been reported as far back as May and is still a problem. I have the same issue, whenever I log out of one character to try to switch to another, it crashes the application. When I try to exit the application, it also crashes. This is running on a Windows 7 machine with 8 gigs of RAM, so the lack-of-memory theory someone mentioned doesn't fit.

This is the only game I see this issue with.

I also noticed something else strange, whenever it does crash, it moves the Windows 7 taskbar to the top from the bottom where I usually keep it. Very odd. Have not seen that with any other game either. I run on twin GTX570s. The system has 3 monitors, but for LOTRO I only use a single one (running at 1920x1080), just in case that has some similarity to others with the same problem.

I must add, I stopped playing LOTRO for well over a year and recently started playing again. In the past, I did not see this same issue at all in several years of playing LOTRO, so this must have been introduced in a recent patch, I assume.

This is a tricky one. It often but not always does it under Linux/wine. Under Windows I get batches of it and then none for periods of time. I think it must be triggered by something server side.

As people notes if this prevents you from saving settings then you can always do the settings before entering a character and exit right there (to save) and go back in.

As "save settings to disk" button would be nice, BTW.
