Thread: Please make some SFX optional! (or at least eating noise)

Please let me know if this is already possible one way or another, but I would love it if this game were to offer some of the sound effects that you and other characters make as an option to play or not play in the audio menu.

I'm Misophonic and I can't handle the eating noise in this game - I either have to cover my ears, turn off my speakers, or - the worst option - turn off all noises in the game just to avoid this horrible sound, the number one trigger for my Misophonia. Perhaps others are affected by other noises as well - perhaps the horse whistle or some other noise that doesn't bother me at all. It seems like there are only a few of these unavoidable-but-potentially-terrible noises, and any way that this could be alleviated would make gameplay significantly better for people like myself.

This is an idea to help anyone in my situation; if I'm speaking only for myself, I'd love it if the eating sfx was just cut from the game entirely. Nothing else bothers me, but that one ruins my enjoyment of every other noise they put so much work into including.

A lot of the sounds are way over the top!

There's no reason we should all sound like swine at a trough when we eat. Likewise, there's no reason everything a cook makes should include that disgusting slurping sound. How can making flour sound like liquid?

The one that really bothers me is the pipe smoking one. Reminds me of when my grandfather was dying of emphysema. His breathing had that sucking, rasping sound. Gives me chills every time I hear it.

At this point, the only thing one can do is go into Options--> Audio--> and turn down the Sound Effects. You will miss other sounds, but at least the really revolting ones will go away.

Ok, wow. I had no idea there was actually a word for it. The sound of eating in the game has bothered me for a long time. Luckily, people in my kin are kind enough to warn me when they are about to eat before a fight so I can cover my ears or turn down the sound.

Over 4 years of trying on this has not changed anything about the eating sound or the options we have, but that doesn't mean I won't keep hoping for a better solution than the ones you have mentioned and the ones I have been using.

Good luck to us both. And thanks for pointing me toward the word misophonia. I have never met anyone else with the issue, so until now the most I could do to describe it to people was to say it is like hearing nails on a chalkboard.

I know what you mean. I only learned there was a word for it this past year. It's been a huge help in explaining things, and I'm getting the impression that it's more common than I originally thought. For now I'm keeping the SFX off in the game, but I hope that someday I can turn them back on again - I really loved some of the SFX, like the horse running noises, and I'd like to hear them again.

The smoking sound has got to go too. Sounds like I have emphysema.

Don't mean to necro a thread, but I didn't want to make yet another thread when others already exist.

My toddlers have better manners than the eating sounds in LotRO.

Hearing it makes me want to slap everyone making the noise. (I include myself in that, and don't like eating foods not only because I hate hearing the moronic sound, but because I don't want to subject my group to that kind of disgusting listening experience.)

The SFX has been there forever, and I know they won't dignify the game by making it better or removing it, but I still had to say I can't stand it & wish it would be yanked.

(The smoking sound is annoying too, if not as disgusting as the shoveling slop sound. I just figured it was Turbine's politically correct way of pandering - "Now don't you smoke kids...")

As mentioned above, this is currently the only fix for some of us. However, also as mentioned above, it is not a satisfactory fix, as some of these noises clearly cause distress but others are quite nice - for instance, I love the horse-clopping sounds. Currently, I cannot hear them. Thus, I request to change the noises that seem to bother a fairly large number of people, such as the eating and smoking SFX.

I endorse this thread continuing, because I imagine the more people who agree, the greater chance it gets taken seriously, but I think we all know that we can turn the sound off, so it doesn't need repeating.
