Just a thought, I've seen they have a sort on WoW now, and though a lot of people play this game because it's more mature than WoW, I was thinking perhaps an app that'd allow you to chat with others who are in-game while out of game? Or maybe one specifically for your kinship? Could have Android/iPhone versions of the app too.
Re: Store/App Suggestion - Out of Game Chat Interface
An excellent suggestion (+1 rep)! There are a number of third-party websites that have kinship hosting and chat functions, however, none that I know of that integrate with players in-game. The chat function works only for those logged onto the website, and if you are logged into a website and chatting, you are probably not playing in-game.
At a minimum, it would be nice if Turbine could program the functionality for third-party website hosters to provide an in-game chat interface. Or, include the functionality on the LOTRO community site - it is still in Beta, right?
Cheers,
Fara

Re: Store/App Suggestion - Out of Game Chat Interface
The way the out of game chat works on WoW, is that you may chat to those within the game, but on other servers/factions, but also to the extent where you can also chat to players on other Blizzard games. Turbine have only two online games, and far less servers than WoW. Though the idea is impressive, it requires a lot of effort.

STO uses Jabber to allow users to connect to chat channels. including custom made channels, kinship channels etc.
Works cross servers for them too. test server or live.

This would actually probably be amongst the easiest set up. Facebook uses jabber to allow users to connect to it's user and group chats too.
Re: Store/App Suggestion - Out of Game Chat Interface
I'd suggest reaching out to MSN/Yahoo/AIM to integrate into their existing chat tools. I know AOL has a blast group setup that would fit into kinchat REALLY easily. AIM is mobile too, and can be forwarded to mobile while logged off. It would be a crapload of traffic to forward a kinchat out of the game(or glff, yikes). Convince whoever takes it to pay for the servers and let them advertise on them somehow to make up for it.
It would be nice to get message from raidmembers when a raid was ready etc.
Re: Store/App Suggestion - Out of Game Chat Interface
Goodness, this would be one of Turbine's quickest sales to me. I would be glad to purchase this in a heartbeat, as long as it supported multiple channels.

I use Skype - either one on one, or a 'conference call'. Free, runs in the background fairly well, and lets me chat all I want.

Ball lies in Turbines court here, as they'd have to open up and allow developers to access their chat system. It'd be wisest for turbine to create a quick app to do so, it honestly wouldn't require much. Jabber integration and they could market it as a service, or a store item and make a bit of money off of it too like WoW did.

Not talking about that, I host a teamspeak server for that. Want something that will integrate with the in-game chat so you can chat with your kinmates while you're not in game and they are. =)
Re: Store/App Suggestion - Out of Game Chat Interface
I use ventrilo, am I missing something, besides you want something else for free. Problem I have is occasionally someone gives password out and then abuses it. NP I kick them, I have control over it and I dont think you would if incorporated into the game. Same as block user in game chat, I suppose

Actually it would be even better if there we're mobile apps for use from phones. Both wow & Rift have this feature and Guild Wars 2 is going to have it as well. Being able to talk to your kinship members and/or friends while not in game would be a huge feature, and one I would spend tp and/cash on.

Yeah, that was my original intention was to be able to chat with my kinship and friends list while I was on the road.
