Wanna know why I'm giving LotRO another shot?

Aside from the fact that I just watched the LotR trilogy again over the weekend, that is.

Seriously though, I've been perusing the free player forums for the past hour or so, and I can count on one hand (with fingers to spare) the number of times I've seen the use of cheesy gamer jargon like "faceroll" or "melting faces". Heck, in one particular post, a new user asked the one question that is absolutely guaranteed to set the boards on fire on any other game's forums: "What is the best class?" I cracked open that 3-page thread, expecting to see eleven kinds of vitriol from demands for class nerfs to general inter-class contempt and min-max'er angst, not to mention the crucifixion of the OP for asking such an "asinine" question. I was mightily impressed, however, to find one after another player actually trying to offer an appropriate/helpful answer, when that answer, clearly, can be nothing but subjective.

*This* is the gaming community I've been looking for since the early days of EverQuest (the game that lured me back, making my first foray into the newly-launched LotRO years ago fairly brief). I think it's not mere coincidence that the community seems markedly more mature in a game that places a much lower emphasis on PvP than every other copy cat MMORPG coming out these days.

I am very much looking forward to spending some quality time here.

Welcome Back! I hope it becomes Welcome Home.

I also hope you picked up a few insights on the best class to play - which the best answer really is "all of them, depending on mood."

Well, I'm definitely gaining a better understanding of what I might start with, anyway. I'm a hopeless altaholic.

At this point I'm considering starting out as either a minstrel, loremaster, warden, burglar or captain, lol.

I am very glad to see that you are giving Lotro another shot and though I don't know you from Adam I would like to say that it is always good to see someone return.

Heh, now there's a good insight into human nature! I love PVPing, it's fun and so dynamic, but I don't appreciate a lot of the attitude that normally comes with it. Enmity, that's the word. So much enmity that bubbles up in some people when they forget it's for fun, and all that angst and enmity comes out in chat, in glff, and in some areas of the forums too. You've inspired me to spend more time in the free player forums!

Most of PVE Lotro is full of such sweet people! I just wish the high-level areas had more people like that; there seems to be a lot more elitism and enmity amongst too many high-lvl players. Hm....that makes me want to start TP-grinding groups, to help free players buy more content and make even Dunland feel less like PVP! Hm...

I'm sorry OP, sounds to me like you didn't have a very good "welcome back" experience there. Everyone knows after all, that the correct answer is "Warden".

Are you talking about EQ circa 1999? In those days there was no anti-griefing software code, so even on the non-pvp servers,
there was that same adversarial attitude towards other players.

"Sand Giants and Specs to Docks! OMG!"

Some of the griefers became legendary, and had some hilarious websites, at the expense of others of course. Even the guides had attitude. Tweety Rants is still online somewhere I think. I'd look it up but it's just laden with foul language.

Re: Wanna know why I'm giving LotRO another shot?

I just joined LOTRO a little over a month ago and I can honestly say the lack of bile and vitriol in the community has been an unbelievably wonderful experience. I came over from "that land behemoth" of a MMORPG which I had been playing for nearly 6 years. I think in the last month I have logged in to that one twice. The community here is making it really difficult for me to make myself log in over there and face the disgusting behavior in heroics. In fact I am seriously considering putting my family's 6 accounts over there on semi permanent hiatus.

My hat is seriously off to you guys. You the other players are what really make this game great.

Its amazing how much better a game is when pvp angst is not the driving force behind the gameplay.

I started playing that game in 2001. Although I read about the adventures of that infamous griefing bard (Fancy?), and there were certainly some players whose parents clearly never taught them how to play well with others, for the most part my experience was great - helpful people everywhere I turned, and I rarely regretted meeting anyone. The MMORPG genre was still young and hadn't devolved into the cesspool it can be these days. The decline over the subsequent years was clear, of course.

You can tell a lot about a game from it's community forums. The forums are typically the first stop for miscreants and malcontents, looking for little more than someplace to drop what they consider to be "righteous n00b pwnage" everywhere they can. They're like hyenas, drooling over the chance to descend upon the unsuspecting player who makes the mistake of speaking up about something or asking a question the answer to which all the "cool" kids consider common knowledge.

It's almost surreal how different the LotRO forums are. It's like all the adults in the gaming community got together and voted this to be the game they're going to play. I can't even begin to tell you have refreshing that is. I was so impressed, I re-subbed last night, even though it will be weeks or even months before I find a need for any of the exclusives doing so provides. I also play to buy the Mirkwood and Isengard expansions soon. I've never felt so good about paying a MMORPG subscription fee before.
