Wow that was a great riddle and answer. I was thinking 'mini' + ' Elle' (the fashion magazine) = Miriel. I know, ridiculous.

Haha, yup. You're up Boraxxe. xD
Well, I suppose you could always say "flame resistant sunglasses" if you prefer that to "shoes"
Gandalf likes beer? I thought he was more of an ale guy . That's what came to mind at first, then I remembered that its 'cannot' instead of 'shall' in the books.
Now I'll need sometime to think of a new one though.

Ya know, I have read LOTR about 15 times....and I did not remember that the book has "cannot" instead of "shall not".
"Close enough" indeed.....you had it exactly correct!
I really need to stop watching the movies....beginning to realize how much they have tainted the story (in my head anyway).

Maybe Boraxxe can give us one while we wait? This my favorite riddle thread!
I sent a PM to LoyKashka.
We'll wait another day.
In the meantime I will post an old translation.
Can someone give me it's title?
The unlit areas where these things abide
Have no light and are as moist as scribing fluid,
But without speed nor roughness tolls their tocsin,
While into unpleasant ooze you slowly settle.
You settle in the ooze who have the cheek
To rap or tap their postern,
Still above the rictus’d ghoulies gape
And putrid fluids flow.
Near the tainted creek-thread
The sagging salix sobs,
Unhappily the raucous ravens lurk
Squawking as they slumber.
Across some range, an extended and tiresome path,
Within a fungal dale containing ashen boles,
Near a sullen pond’s margin lacking breeze or wave,
Completely orbless, these things misbehave.
The crypts where these things repose
Being distant, moist and iced
A lone and peaked rushlight burns;
Its here they tally the take.
Those bricks are slick, the beams they leak;
Their pads across the boards
Report faintly as in slush-slap-creak,
And they slither to the port.
Peeking grimly out a slot
Clutching gropers grasp,
After its done, into a bag
Your ivories robbed will last.
Across some range, an extended and dreary course,
Beyond the cob-corners and the swamp of Borse,
Into the hang-man’s forest and past the dead-man’s gate,
Your search for these things ends--and they masticate.

Oooh glad we waited! This is a good one! Here's my guess:
From The Fellowship of the Ring -
Right across the floor, close to the feet of two huge pillars a great fissure had opened. Out of it a fierce red light came, and now and again flames licked at the brink and curled about the bases of the columns. Wisps of dark smoke wavered in the hot air.
'If we had come by the main road down from the upper halls, we should have been trapped here,' said Gandalf. 'Let us hope now that the fire now lies between us and pursuit. Come! There is no time to lose.'
When the Fellowship had fled from the Chamber of Mazarbul, they found themselves in the Second Hall of Old Moria close to the Dimrill Gate and luckily on the right side of a great fissure.

You know I should have had one ready to go, but I had to think on it a bit...
Here we go!
Receptacles comprised mostly of thin, narrow, fabricated parts obtained from the main stem of a woody plant with clear apical dominance employed to facilitate an expedited embarkation from some which would seek to impede, maintain and prevent independence.

Hmmm, sounds like "barrels out of bond" again....
The barrels that Bilbo stuffed the dwarves into to escape from the wood elves.

Again?? I'm so embarrassed! And I put a lot of effort in that one too...
Oh well Boraxxe you're up!
Don't be too embarrassed...I just spent about 2 hours coming up with a "killer" clue for Shadowfax.
While I was waiting for you to respond to my submission I went back through some of the previous posts to kill time and guess what I found....Shadowfax had already been done.
I have been guilty of this kind of duplication on several occasions.
Now I hafta come up with a new one.
By the way, even though "barrels out of bond" had been been done before, it still took me quite a while to come up with that answer the second time.
Obfuscation can take so many different paths it can continue to surprise us even when we duplicate. Just think of how many ways there are to say "GET OFF MY LAWN!"
Ok, now I need to think a bit to come up with a new one.

Excellent. I love this thread. It is a very welcome variation on the other riddle threads - I have gotten to the point where my well is bone dry for one and two word riddles. That said, I don't have anything prepared for the next obfuscation riddle and will need a day or two.
Traversing enumerated portals via depleted tributary, denominate custodian of liquid spray to be bypassed ere sovereign access is achieved.
Too easy? This is obfuscated indeed.
I'm stumped.
I have tried to put the above into some different language.
Maybe it can help someone else solve this conundrum.
Going through numbered chambers by way of a dried up riverbed, name the keeper of mist which you must get by before you can get to the place of the king/queen.

It wouldn't have been easy without what Boraxxes did. Ecthelion of the Fountain?

Yes indeed this has me bamboozled as well. I think you helped boraxxe, or at least led me to made a guess.
I'm going to guess Gondolin, Turgon's hidden city.
I think it meets most of these. Tumladen, the location of Gondolin, which I believe used to be a lake, was shown to Turgon by Ulmo, who was the Lord of Waters (mists?). The location was arrived at by means of a dark tunnel that ran deep under the mountains. And of course, Turgon became king after founding and building the city of Gondolin.
edit: Just saw Elenluin's post. I bet that's it!

At one point in the Silmarillion, the text names the tunnel through the Encircling Mountains as the "Dry River" (initial caps in the original text). The text also states that there were seven gates. Ecthelion of the Fountain is the warden of the final gate. You cannot reach Turgon, the king, without passing Ecthelion.
Elenluin-Menelloth has the riddle mantle, but nice teamwork to all.

Unorthodox pole mounted display employed by punitive expedition attempting to repossess enumerated valuables of disputed ownership.
The banners carried by the elves and lakemen when approaching Thorin's company at the Lonely Mountain.
Though the word "unorthodox" has me concerned.
From The Hobbit:
The next morning early a company of spearmen was seen crossing the river, and marching up the valley. They bore with them the green banner of the Elvenking and the blue banner of the Lake, and they advanced until they stood right before the wall at the Gate.

Aye, that is a good effort, but not unorthodox enough. I was going to ding you on enumerated as well, until I recollected that they demanded a specific fractional share (I believe it was a 1/10th, later revised to 1/14th).
It's funny, I hadn't even considered your response as a potential answer. It just goes to show that no matter how specific the intended answer may be, more often than not there is at least one other viable (or nearly viable) solution you didn't think of.

Without resorting to Wikipedia I *think* the talus is the ankle-bone, and the first part is presumably burning, so: firefoot, which was the horse of Eomer if memory serves?
Hope you don't mind me butting in btw, lurked these threads for some time and this is the first time I've come close to working one out
