Ancalagon, The Black
Some sources define this name (Ancalagon) as "Rushing Jaws" which could be expressed as "high-velocity chompers".
The Black: this could refer to a good light absorber (thanks to Vilnas for that hint).

Well, it's been 3 days.
There are 4 words in that riddle.
If you connect 2 of them with a hyphen it may help.

You have it.
extended = long
canister-extremity = bottom
expander = leaf
You're up bambu^3.

In that case maybe they should affix a label to the barrels:

That didn't work so I'll just post this!
It is to be desired that quickly moving currents in the stratosphere, which are beneath such ailerons that do belong to yourselves, would prove sufficient to allow a destination to be reached wherein a solar voyage occurs as additionally does a lunar perambulation.

I doubt that I have it right, but this is what your sentence lead me to think of.
Hobbits.
From; The Fellowship of the Ring:
The talk did not die down in nine or even ninety-nine days. The second disappearance of Mr. Bilbo Baggins was discussed in Hobbiton, and indeed all over the Shire, for a year and a day, and was remembered much longer than that. It became a fireside-story for young hobbits; and eventually Mad Baggins, who used to vanish with a bang and a flash and reappear with bags of jewels and gold, became a favourite character of legend and lived on long after all the true events were forgotten.

Re: Obfuscated Tolkien Trivia
Not what I had in mind, but it fits pretty well--especially the communal significance.
I am looking for a one-word response.
I think I can expand the sentence by a few words and give it away... but I'll wait a little while first, if that's all right.

I see where you're coming from -- I was going with the first meaning from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/m%C3%A9tier , but, like you, I usually think of it as the second meaning in normal speech.

Finally, that last clue did it. (I think!)
I was stuck thinking it related to one of the nicknames Bilbo gives himself to the dragon "stinging fly", but it didn't fit the first part of the sentence.
Anyway, how about "Farmer Maggot"?
