    Nope

    Here's a hint: the answer is a named character from The Silmarillion.

    Ancalagon, The Black

    Some sources define this name (Ancalagon) as "Rushing Jaws" which could be expressed as "high-velocity chompers".

    The Black: this could refer to a good light absorber (thanks to Vilnas for that hint).

    Well, it's been 3 days.

    There are 4 words in that riddle.
    If you connect 2 of them with a hyphen it may help.

    I think I finally have a guess for this one...

    Could this be a reference to the barrels of Longbottom leaf found by Merry and Pippin in Isengard?

    You have it.

    extended = long
    canister-extremity = bottom
    expander = leaf

    You're up bambu^3.

    In that case maybe they should affix a label to the barrels:

    [Warning! Smoking this leaf may lead to more junk in your trunk.]

    I was waiting for something especially clever to come to me...

    That didn't work so I'll just post this!

    It is to be desired that quickly moving currents in the stratosphere, which are beneath such ailerons that do belong to yourselves, would prove sufficient to allow a destination to be reached wherein a solar voyage occurs as additionally does a lunar perambulation.

    You are quoting from the introduction of The Hobbit where the narrator describes a hobbit hole. I don't have the text handy, but something to the effect of "Not a nasty, oozy wet hole with bits of worms sticking out..."

    I doubt that I have it right, but this is what your sentence lead me to think of.

    Hobbits.
    From; The Fellowship of the Ring:

    The talk did not die down in nine or even ninety-nine days. The second disappearance of Mr. Bilbo Baggins was discussed in Hobbiton, and indeed all over the Shire, for a year and a day, and was remembered much longer than that. It became a fireside-story for young hobbits; and eventually Mad Baggins, who used to vanish with a bang and a flash and reappear with bags of jewels and gold, became a favourite character of legend and lived on long after all the true events were forgotten.

    Re: Obfuscated Tolkien Trivia

    Not what I had in mind, but it fits pretty well--especially the communal significance.

    I am looking for a one-word response.

    I think I can expand the sentence by a few words and give it away... but I'll wait a little while first, if that's all right.

    Agreed. I wasn't particularly satisfied with the answer either.

    This one has me stumped...

    Nickname consisting of "forte/strength" and "space/gap/silence/interlude" and containing apparent reference to insects...

    ...beats head against wall...

    I see where you're coming from -- I was going with the first meaning from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/m%C3%A9tier, but, like you, I usually think of it as the second meaning in normal speech.

    The illusorily entomological reference is to larval diptera.

    Finally, that last clue did it. (I think!)

    I was stuck thinking it related to one of the nicknames Bilbo gives himself to the dragon "stinging fly", but it didn't fit the first part of the sentence.

    Anyway, how about "Farmer Maggot"?
