    Re: Crashing increase

It's not a driver or hardware issue. I've checked my RAM, I've defragmented the HD Lotro is on, I've checked the HD for errors. The game crashes every 10-20 load screens/zone changes. More so when entering highly populated zones like Galtrev. This screams memory leak to me.

This is unrelated to the frequent crashes in ROI zones/instances. Those I've been able to eliminate by muting ingame sounds. Not optimal, but at least I can play.

    Re: Crashing increase

Part of the client crash issue is directly related to the file size your character occupies. I crash to desktop as well, and after testing it for a while, my educated guess is a memory leak directly related to the size of your character file that is compounded by a function or memory call when you enter certain areas of the game. It's generally accepted that various areas in the game are not necessarily linked to each other related to their location in the game. For example, the crafting hall in the 21st hall is not actually a part of the 21st hall, but something else, as demonstrated by load times loading into each one, and the load time you see when moving between them.

The same thing happens in Dunland, except the connection between areas is a bit stranger. Isengard (and all the instances that take place in it) and the Gravenwood appear to be linked in that the crash to desktop will occur primarily in these areas. That being said, there's a workaround that worked for me, and while it's annoying, it so far has 100% effectiveness.

As I said before, the most common of the crashes appears to be related to a memory leak related to the size of your character file (Lvl 75 with most quests done, etc. occupies a much larger footprint than a level 7 in Combe) and a function call the client makes on that file when you enter the Gravenwood or Isengard. After approximately an hour of play (+/- 5-7 minutes.. it's pretty consistent actually) attempting to enter one of the above areas will cause the crash to desktop. To work around this, just load in a low level character sitting in a low level area, then go back to your high level. This seems to purge the client file, and so far it seems to work consistently with preventing this particular type of crash. Ideal solution? No... but at least it works.

Crash examples : 55 minutes of play on lvl 75 Warden gathering ore. Crashed on entering the Gravenwood
62 minutes of play on lvl 75 RuneKeeper then tried to enter Fangorn. Crashed upon entering instance.
102 minutes of play on lvl 75 RuneKeeper, same crash.
Repair examples : 95 minutes of play on lvl 75 RuneKeeper, switched characters to lvl 5 Burglar for 10 seconds, switched back
    and entered Fangorn, no crash.
184 minutes of play on lvl 75 Warden (mostly crafting in 21st hall), switched characters to lvl 13 Cappy for
2 minutes, switched back and entered Fangorn, no crash.
Attempted to enter Gravenwood after 20 minutes of play on lvl 75 warden, no crash.

    Re: Crashing increase

That's very interesting and hopefully helpful to the people who can do something about it (if it's even possible). For me, the loading of my high level characters is just as annoying as a reboot (and can take as long). If I switch between two 1-40ish characters, I have VERY short load times. If I switch TO a level 75 character (I have none in the middle ranges between 40 and 75) then it takes FOREVER. Switching FROM one of them to a lower character is quick, but even from one 75 to the other, it's a burden, no matter where they are left.

I've noticed that the game is now taking more and more processing power to run and it's starting to slow down significantly. I know that computers get obsolete, but this has not been a slow process. It's very quickly become cumbersome. No other problems with the computer in any other way (or game, I might add). No extra programs downloaded. Nothing but the game getting harder to run even at low levels and they have acknowledged that yes, they're gonna use more resources as the game gets bigger (file size, world map, character space, every which way). It's just apparent that this thing I play on is now keeping me from enjoying a game I used to be able to do much more with. Fair? Sure. They don't have to do anything, but I'd like to see them at least try to work within a smaller framework. Heck, necessity being the mother of invention, perhaps being more frugal with the resources would keep them more focused and keep more bugs out of the game. Narrow the field of vision and all. It would go a long way toward counter-balancing their obvious, obtuse money-grabbing moves they say they have to make to be viable.

    Re: Crashing increase

Interesting theory, pelmysilverwolf. I can comfirm that the crashes happen pretty much exclusively on my 75 char, while low lvl alts can play for hours on end and zone back and forth as much as they want without crashing.

I also notice that load times on my 75 are much loner, and the HD gets very loud as it's shuffling a lot of data. Normally I'd just defrag it to speed up the process but that had no effect in this case. I wonder though, why the huge amounts of data? This wasn't a problem at 65 and I had a much worse PC back then. Now I get a stable 60fps pretty much everywhere, but only after the game finishes loading all its files, during which fps comes down to a crawl for a minute or two.

    Re: Crashing increase

Turbine probably does not intend to fix this. It happens every time they come out with a new update or expansion and then subsides a while later like a few months or so.

Turbine does not seem to like to admit blame on most things. Unstead it's your hardware.

It is happening to many times to people with different machine to be anything but a client problem.

They will probably tell you to update drivers etc because how could it possibly be their fault.
This has been going on for years with new updates and expansions.

Turbine please follow the Vulcan way and use logic.
Many different kinds of machines and the same thing happens to each one.
Logically it is on your end.

I have tried all the other options such as tech support and bug report and all I've gotten from them is lets see what wrong with you machine. Nothing is wrong with my computer.

Now that The Great River is out give it time and it will get better on it's own.

    Now for a possitive.

First I commend Turbine for the Customer Service representitive responding in this thread. This is the first time I have seen someone from Turbine who seems to care. Thank You.

Turbine The Great River is fantastic. You have kept your promise about this year being better content.
Keep up the fantastic work telling the story of the great master.

    Re: Crashing increase

I'm not sure if it fixed itself or if it was addressed or if it was an unintended benefit of the changes to the rewards of the Forges of Isengard, but I have only had one crash since last Monday in 6 attempts. That is an improvement and I am pleased that it doesn't seem to be happening every time. I have not done Roots of Fangorn yet, so we will see if that works better.

    Re: Crashing increase

Just in case you missed it when I posted it twice shortly after RoI release, here it is again.

If you have a 32 bit version of Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7) and you're experiencing these crashes, it's due to the client process memory size in RAM surpassing the default process size limit in 32 bit Windows. Default size is 2GB.

Here's my thread for the workaround and it works for anyone who tries it:

    http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.p...32-bit-Windows

The kicker is that you need at least 3 Gigabytes of RAM to make use of this tweak. People with 2GB or lower can't do it.

If you have a 64 bit version of Windows and you're experiencing these crashes it usually has to do with a Sound Device/Driver issue (Creative X-Fi for example) or messed up/highly fragmented game data files.

    Re: Crashing increase

PRETTY sure there is a significant number of people playing without that much RAM. Not saying a majority even, but enough that there should be a workaround started on TURBINE'S end, not ours. I shouldn't have to constantly work to use one hyper-specific function or part of the game (or avoid it).

...oh, and the ghost in the machine is back. Crashing again, same as I once did...guess I spoke too soon.

    Re: Crashing increase

It's still happening. Happened on the way into Forges of Isengard daily on my captain and on the way out with my hunter. Same day, less than an hour apart. How many times do I (we) have to bug this?

I had to reinstall my game to fix my crashes. I still get them but no where near as often. I have crashed twice over a two week period of time since i reinstalled.

    Re: Crashing increase

Seem to crash a lot as well recently.
That is, the game will suddenly stop, graphics will look corrupted, and I find myself back in windows.

In the event log I get this:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Tried with both 296.10 and 295.73 drivers.

    Re: Crashing increase

Yesterday was especially bad. I ran a hardware monitor to see if it would be related to any temperature fluctuations, but everything seemed to be well within parameters.

Just for fun I dropped down to DX9 and was able to play for several hours without incident.
This however does not mean the problem is solved.. only that it did not show itself for a while.

Already I have disabled EAX, disabled all the 'sound cards' on my system that are not in use and also tried to 'tweak' the nvidia settings (remove the power saving option and gone for 'full power always') in case that was related.

I'm not seeing much of comments from Turbine here. Isn't it possible to have a Debug-client we could run that would log stuff, which could perhaps capture the exact moment our game crashes, and thus, help give you a better understanding of what the problem is in an effort to solve it. Even though it would surely take less effort for Turbine to do nothing and have the few players with this problem try everything (including a re installation) just in the hopes that something magically unchecked the tick mark next to 'crash the game often, randomly, without any apparent pattern'.

    Update:
Today I have so far not had a single crash. When starting the game today I decided to remove all the .dll files in the game folder, then having the patcher download the required ones. Not sure if it made a difference, but at least I can play in EAX mode without crashing. I have also limited my framerate to 60 fps (instead of having it at 120+ with vsync). So who knows. Chances are, as soon as I hit 'save changes' on this post I'll crash =).

I was right. However, this is the first time (today) that I am playing my Burglar. Could it be that one character is more likely to crash than others?

    Update2:
Been playing for a few hours now without any crashes. I had the launcher reset all my video settings, then upon entering the game I used the 'detect optimal'. I then changed everything to 'very high' and my resolution to 1920x1080. While staying at DX9. I also went into troubleshooting and put the engine speed to 'high' instead of 'very high'. Fingers x'ed.

That is, the game will suddenly stop, graphics will look corrupted, and I find myself back in windows.

In the event log I get this:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Tried with both 296.10 and 295.73 drivers.

I used GPU-Z to log the temperature etc, and at no point was it over 57degC. Of course, this was in DX9 mode without crashing. I'll switch back to DX11 now and see how it fares.

Running in DX11 for a few hours now, max temp 66degC. No crashes so far.
Still running engine on "high" instead of "very high". Hopefully this is the workaround until Turbine can do something about this problem.

    Re: Crashing increase

Played for 2 hours in DX9 mode without incident.
Played for 15 minutes in DX11 mode before game crashed.

    GPU-Z running:

So doubt it would be heating.

    ---
This thread; http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=225962 references an idea to change the voltage of the video card.
Using the tools from my vendor (ASUS) I increased my voltage by 0.03 points and so far the game has been stable today. Of course, this doesn't mean anything until I've played for a few days without crashes.

So, I'm gonna be trying DX11 until it crashes, and then try some more changes to see what makes the game .. not crash.
No crashes so far tonight. We'll see what happens tomorrow

Maybe it's just me but ... could this be driver related?

I just run DxDiag and it told my my graphics card had 4063 MB RAM .... it's a GTX580, they don't have as much RAM.
My system has 8GB, so where do teh 4063 MB come from?
Edit: nvm, I saw that now:
    Display Memory: 4063 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 1503 MB
    Shared Memory: 2559 MB

Anyway, the crash happened due to a DX10 access violation it seems. I'll post further crash notes as I get more reports, har har!

    Re: Crashing increase

If you have a gTX580 (like I do) try using a tool to increase your voltage by 0.03 points and see if that helps.
Be VERY careful if you do this though, as an incorrect setting may not be good for your card.

I'm continuing with day 2 of my testing now. default voltage is 1.050 on my 580, I am playing with 1.053 now and haven't had a crash yet. We'll see.

Now that IS strange ... I can hardly believe NVidia would mess up the firmware settings that much.

But I'll give it a shot, after all my Warranty was gone the very moment I installed a new cooler anyway :P

However, I experience heavy graphics issues as well lately. Flickering carpet textures or doors, the sky being gone, some enemies spawning incorrectly, after returning from Urugath (and on other opportunities) the textures in the 21st hall were mostly white (this would support your idea of the memory failing - due to power loss?). Most or all of them started around update 6, so I am not sure if it wasn't Turbine messing around with the graphics engine. My best idea for the crashes are still the drivers and settings.

With nothing changed since last night when I played for several hours.
exception code c0000005 is a memory issue. A year or so ago I kept getting crashing in LotRO with the same crash code and when I ran memtest86+ it found one of my sticks had multiple errors on it. I would suggest running that test (be sure to use the full test not just the quick test) and make sure your ram is not faulty.

After replacing my stick (ocz lifetime warranty ftw) I have not had any crashes in LotRO since then.

I would suggest to anyone crashing that they go into event viewer and check the crash codes to rule this out.

Curiously, the evolution of the internet seems inversely proportional to the evolution of man.

No crashes today, at 1.054. Played for 8 hours, in DX11.
Maybe just lucky. Didn't switch characters that often today, and didn't do ettenmoors.

    Re: Crashing increase

To add to a list somewhere:

Yesterday (4/10)- crashed on swift between Galtrev and Tal Methadras (sp?). As per usual....my bad for forgetting to take the slow-pony. Apparently the fast pony is too fast for the servers and causes a whiplash in the space-time continuum which results in a game-crash.

Today (4/11) - crashed leaving the Tal Metahdras instanced area. No reason.

I can play TF2 at 60-70 fps, I can play SWTOR with 50-60 fps in group combat.

I cannot play LOTRO between areas while out of combat, with nobody around. Time to hire new coders?

So: Last report was no problems at 1.054... in a 9+ hour gaming session
Today it froze within 15 minutes of starting game.

Basically; Graphics gets frozen.. then black screen.. then I hear game sounds... I exit game, and restart and hope it lasts longer until next freeze.

Several fellow players have experienced it in the past (as have I), but the frequency seems to be on the rise. Even leaving (as in the cave exiting the Forges daily) seems to have trouble. Is this something I'm experiencing alone?
Significant number of increased crashes for me after heading into the newer areas.

    Re: Crashing increase

Either because of the latest NVidia Driver or trhe latest Lotro Update (happened at the same time) I get more driver crashes.
Black screens also happen must most crashed end with "the graphics driver crashed, Windows is restarting it", some as usual with "Lotroclient stopped working"

I just wanted to say, since a lot of you guys were mentioning the Isengard areas, that I've been experiencing a lot of crashes in the Bree area as well. I hadn't played the game in a while, but I had never had any crash issues before. It seems to happen more frequently when I try to zone into the interior locations in the town, usually if I've been logged in for a fair while.

ditto, I get these crashes all the time since the last update and the locations don't seem to matter. Anytime I change locations i.e go through doors, etc and occasionally from opening a vendor window. New drivers installed of course.

I am working my way through all the various suggested tweaks but I have a feeling I could be chasing my tail for weeks. Hopefully, a solution will present itself soon. I have no doubt Turbine is working on it. After two years of daily play it is actually making me think of moving to a new game (temporarily) until this gets worked out.

Vista 32 bit, Nvidia GT220, 3GB Ram... has been a pretty stable system until update six.

Solution for you is in my thread here:

Workaround for Client Crash to Desktop in 32-bit Windows

That is, until Turbine fixes the problem or you install a 64 bit OS.

Yep, those instructions were one of the first tweaks I was going to try when I got home last night. After making the change as you described in your post, I had a three hour play session with no issues at all. You just might be on to something ;-) Thanks.

As to the 64 bit OS... yeah, I need to move on but with Windows 8 scheduled for this fall I am trying to limp along unti then with what I have.

If I do this, what are the consequences? Can this affect other programs negatively? The life of my computer in some way? What exactly am I doing by doing this? It sounds like it would work, but since I've got no idea what it will do, I don't know if it will affect how I use this computer in other ways. Can you shed some light on that? Are there potential conflicts or problems that might commonly arise by doing this? I have 4 GB of RAM from what it looks like and a 32 bit system.

The fix allows windows to allocate more of your computer's memory to user processes, which seems to reduce the frequency of LOTRO client crashes on 32bit OSs. It shouldn't have any permanent negative effects on your system, however the original post points out that it can interfere with your video drivers in some odd manner, and if does so, it's fairly simple to undo the settings and restart your machine. It's worth trying to see if it does fix/reduce your client's crashing frequency.

Personally I had been using the fix for several months and it did reduce how often the client crashed. However, I haven't been using the fix since I upgraded my video card, since it's incompatible with the new card's drivers and disables Direct3D. Instead I ended up reducing the texture quality and some of the other video quality settings, which subjectively seems to help somewhat, although it's not a complete fix.

    Re: Crashing Increase

I started playing when it was Rise of Isengard. The game played fine on my computer, then I did not play for about two months, then when I played again, my character will stick and nothing will unstick it. Then give it a minuet or two and it says that it has lost connection. Takeing me back to the login screen. I uninstalled the game then I reinstalled and I still have that problem. I only get to play about five minuets then it happens.

Clocked down my video card by 5% from stock while keeping vcore at 1.063 has solved all my DirectX 11 crashing issues on my GTX580 card.
