I must admit that, when it comes to MMO's, I am a complete virgin, so to speak. Lotro is the first one I have ever played so, naturally, there is a great deal I have had to learn - and am still learning.
Of course, my personal choice to play the style that I do (Total Immersion) can be quite strange or even funny to other players. Since I began playing, I have heard a good deal of comments from other players - most of which I have generally ignored for the most part.
But since I arrived in the Misty Mountains with my dwarf (as part of the Quest for Moria story), I have begun to experience a level of what I can only describe as harrassment from a very small portion of other players. Much of it has been general teasing, scoffing or ridicule. I have had toons run circles round me as if I have no clue as to how to toggle Run and Walk, or comment on how much of a NOOB I am or (in their eyes) seem to be. But sometimes the reaction has certainly been rude to say the least.
For example, I was recently in Moria, walking about the Silvertine, when I received a Tell from out of nowhere. What follows is the exact Chat Log from the conversation (to prevent any form of flaming, I am striking out the player's toon name):
******* says, 'your so lame nuri'
You tell *******, 'how so?'
******* tells you, 'because you just are, its nothing to explain, just pure fact'
You tell *******, 'do I know you?'
******* tells you, 'No, i but i saw you walking around the silvertone lodes'
You tell *******, 'ok. and.....'
******* tells you, 'well i inspected u and bam, i know your lame'
******* has been added to your ignore list.
After his final comment, I immediately put him on Ignore and reported him for harrasssment.
Granted, due to my play style, my gear is not up to par for my level - I rarely get the opportunity to forge new armor, or am able to visit the AH to look for new equipment. Yet, the level of rudeness that I have begun to experience has certainly grown since reaching the Misty Mtns.
I simply cannot understand how my particular style of play would offend someone so gravely that they would have to halt their activity to hold a conversation as above with me. I spent money on the game just as everyone else does, so should I not have the right play the game how I see fit without harrassment? And even if I were a Free-to-play player (which for some reason makes some players hate FtP players - for reasons that completely escape me), I should deserve the same.
It's certainly unfortunate and should not happen. But from what I heard, there is people like that in every MMO and Lotro is apparently one of which where there is the less of them. Some hate F2P players because before, there was mostly fan of LoTR, so less unsavory people like the one that harassed you. Let's hope that will not make you go away, that is certainly not the a majority of players. I had one encounter of the kind in a year and a half. So, just ignore him and enjoy the game!
Even the smallest person can change the course of the future!
There may also be a significant age difference, on the rare times I've encountered this type of behavior in LOTRO it has been someone a good deal younger than me - like aged 10-20. Ignoring them is the best option - don't even get into a conversation, it just encourages them to take out their misplaced frustration on you. Play your way.
Nuri, this server has many of these "jerks". Restrict incoming tells, and avoid further "encounters" with any un-wanted do_che.
Best option this game has to offer. Only let friends and kinship member send you a tell, if you are looking for a group : uncheck it.
Good luck, don´t let a 10 year old kid ruin the game. I rem. someone refusing to trade with me, back in 2010 when i was still F2P... : No thanks, not selling xYx to any F2P...

Dont let them get to you. Gear is helpful but not that important in LotRO. I used quest gear from 5 levels ago until level cap. Make sure to mark yourself as anonymous if you want to avoid those annoying tells.
P.S. Now that im looking at it your gear is a LOT better than what I had when I was your level. That person is just dying to find something to bug you about.
This is my first MMO as well. I was F2P when i first got here as well. (even stayed F2P to cap my first character). I had one intention when i started playing this game. Kill other players. PvP is the only thing keeping me here (broken as it may be). I'll admit role players absolutely freaked me out when i first saw them and i thought they were just crazy people. I just ignored them. Later i read your blog and I have much respect for how much time and detail you put into what seems to be the simplest of tasks (ex. walking everywhere instead of running). My point to this is people play a game with their own intentions in mind and they fear what they don't understand. Don't let it get to ya!
well tbh i'm not a big RP fan, as i'm totally inexperienced at it. and as beardzilla said, kinda odd when i run across it. but on the comment that your gear is cra-ppy, i had to add your name to my lotro app on my windows phone. i personally don't really understand why that person was complaining, therefore i have to agree, they were just using it as an excuse to give you grief. blow it off, make sure your anon, (social options, fellowing tab, little check box in the upper left), and try any other advice that's been given. i gotta give you props for taking your time to RP this game through, as well as the time it takes to write about it, with screenshots.
After his final comment, I immediately put him on Ignore and reported him for harrasssment.
Do this every time without fail and give no quarter. How you play the game is up to you, if someone chooses to interject themselves into your game use the tools at your disposal to fight back.
One aspect of LOTRO will never change....that is people and (sadly) some are jerks. Don't let it get you down, you seem to have done all you can. I am always amazed when someone is angry about how another person plays a *GAME* you play how you want and I will play how I want, if you don't like it...keep it to yourself.
When I first started playing I was in the crafting hall in Bree. Someone sends tell "you want some equipment'. Being a cynical person I'm expecting some scam. But they went and crafted me some weapons and armor and gave it to me for free.
I have more experiences like that then people trolling me. Most of the people on my ignore list are those who stand around spamming shouts/emotes that fill up my chat window.

No, no, no! You should never ignore those people!
In stead, here's what you do with them.
Find the nearest Bard.
Trait for PvP. If they're a tactical class, go for all Tactical mitigation traits. If they're melee/ranged, go for physical mitigation.
Self-buff, toggle your stance, eat, and prepare for a fight.
Find the emote-spammer.
Challenge them to a spar.
Violently rip the life out of them.
In order to spam emotes, they're most likely spamming paste (ctrl + v) and enter. This means that if you challenge them to a spar, they're going to automatically accept before they even notice the popup. Also, the odds are that they aren't buffed, aren't prepared for the fight, and they may not even be traited for PvP. This should give you an incredibly easy kill.
If they whine about how that was unfair, tell them that that's why you don't spam emotes. If they spam emotes again, do the same thing.

It is unfortunate that there are people out there like this, but Darwin never got around to fully cleaning his pool so we are stuck with them. It is interesting that those that choose to point out others and make fun of them are typically the ones that have the most shortcomings. I, for one, enjoy running into RPers. I don't do it much myself, but they add to my experience and are great story fodder because they are reacting to the game world in a way I need for characters.
I disagree about the spars, it involves way too much energy exertion for me. I prefer to wait until they camp for the night and then shortchange their sleeping bag, or maybe find a badger and drop it inside with the express implication that there are goodies worth nibbling on within. Then its sit back with iPhone and wait for the youtube vid.
What can I say? I enjoy dishing out the vengeful justice by my own hand, and I'd rather not involve the critters. If they start thrashing in their sleeping bag, the poor little guy could get hurt!

I did certainly did not expect such a response to this thread! Thank you for the replies. I was a bit angry about the conversation with the person mentioned at the start of the thread, but have decided not to worry about it. I guess he caught me on a bad night and I felt like venting about it. I certainly would not allow someone to chase me from the game (or server) or change my game style in any way.
Putting players on Ignore is probably the best way to deal with such incidents, as well as reporting them for harrassment.

Just out of curiosity, what would you do if they have sparring disabled?
It is wise to remember that human nature is imprinted on the internet, by which this online game is representative of. Basically, both ends of the spectrum, along with the in-betweens permeate the game, as it does the internet. It may be of best interest to become 'anonymous' to avoid unwanted inspections that would invite some of the harassment. Other than that, as my new kin says, it's your game, play it the way you want. Don't let others ruin your enjoyment of the game. My own unfortunate interactions involve those of a snotty younger generation looking for attention. I say don't give it to them, however I'd give out a fair warning for them to stop or else I report. Yet, I see no reason to allow such people to persist in a game that is supposed to be mature, so I say an ignore+report is the best one can do. It saves other people from having to put up with those individuals for a time, anyway.
I first saw you a long time ago walking through bree. And then two weeks later (give or take) I saw you again walking through bree and not far from the level you were before. I honestly thought it was odd. I started looking on the forums and saw what you were about. I really admire what you do and how you play. I think you are awesome for being able to be meticulous and put the time you do into the game. I am lazy when it comes to leveling toons. I have had one up to 50 and a few in the forties and have deleted them for some dumb reason or another. Anyways, keep doing what you're doing and screw what other people have to say.
