I'd just like to know if I should be buying and wearing heavy armor for my newly started Elven hunter. As far as I can see, heavy armor has higher defense stats and costs more money (which is reasonable).
However, are there any adverse effects I should know about? Eg, speed reduction etc. Is there any reason for me to NOT wear it? Thanks.
Yes, hunters can, and should, wear medium armour. This has a higher armour rating than light armour. Light armour is for the three caster classes (minstrel, lore-master, rune-keeper). The only light armour that hunters wear are the cloaks - these are all light armour pieces, even when their stats are geared towards the medium or heavy armour wearing classes.
"Yet there may be a light beyond the darkness; and if so, I would have you see it and be glad."
I havent ever run into Light armour I would want over medium pieces.
It's not just the armour stat, but also the main stats you get on those.
Medium armour tend to have a focus on Agility, because both Hunter and Burglar wear medium and their base stat is Agility.
I believe Wardens also wear Medium armour, and use Agility.
Light armour tends to have a focus on Will and Fate, because those are the main stats of the light armour wearing classes.
The exception are cloak, which only come in one type: Light armour.
Therefore cloaks come with all different stats on them, and are great to balance out your stats.
Same with jewellrt.
Old jewellery had certain stats ( agil, might, Fate etc) bound to certain items.
For instance it would be very rare to find earrings with Agility.
With RoI they let go of this system and from lvl 65 upwards you8 will find any stats on any items.
This makes for greater flexibility on your jewellry.
Actually wardens are a bit weird, because their main stats are Vit and Might (in that order) but they're a medium class. It's quite difficult to find post-65 medium armour until the raid sets which makes any sense for them. Don't even try justifying the medium crafted tailor armour; it's a joke (except possibly for the 70 Dunland cloak).
My warden is currently 72, and still wearing ODT2 helm and ODT1 gloves and boots.
It's a similar but slightly less problematic issue for hunter and burg (my other two toons); only the 72 helm and leggings are decent craft gear. The fact that they're both 75 and wearing raid stuff now didn't help them level. The hunter was wearing 65 Helegrod helm and jacket right up to 73.

Wardens have Might as their main stat
And Vitality (same 1:5 morale ratio as guardians)
This is in fact why you see medium armour that are might-centric.
Any medium armour you find with strong will/fate stats are likely holdovers from when minstrels could use medium armour.

My hunter just wore random quest rewards once he started doing ROI, but he duo'd most content with a Guardian which makes everything super easy.
My Burglar solo'd his way through RoI and he actually wore 4 pieces or Moria armour all the way to lvl 75.
She then got a lot of crafted items and has gathered some nice raid drops in the meantime.
I seriously consider skipping the Draigoch/Galtrev armour set, because she lacsk the marks to buy them.
I might stick to crafted/raid items untill I can get ToO pieces.
I would lose out on the set bonuss, but gain flexibility by being able to replace items at any time.
As you're leveling, you'll want to wear whatever effects your stats the best. And there are light armour pieces that actually are better, stat-wise (armour value itself aside, of course), than medium armour pieces. I actually wore light armour on my hunter while leveling through the 40-50 range. The light pieces actually had agility and most of the medium that I could get my hands on was geared more toward wardens or burgs (aka too much might).

this is all great stuff, use whatever agility stuff you can find but i would like to point out the fact that might is just about completely useless for burgs :P wardens on the other hand are screwed while leveling cuz getting medium with tons and tons of might seems impossible at times

before roi might was universally the melee offense stat so burgs had to stack it as well. with roi, each classss gets a different stat to increase melee offense (now physical mastery) - so burgs went from stacking might for dps to stacking agi for dps. just like how captains can get outgoing healing from might now
