I am here in The Barrow Downs, working on some reputation items; and one of the Skellingtons dropped this item.
Steel-bound LootBox.
Anyone else get one?
Anyone open theirs, yet?
Anyone found a key?
Lawl, RIG's have crept into LOTRO. I've seen these things in *cough* Gaia Online *cough* (yes, yes, goodness knows what I was doing wasting my time there, but anyway).
The RIG's (random item generators) we're never worth Gaia Cash (bought with real cash ofc) spent to open them in Gaia, and I'm willing to bet they'll be a waste of time here. Remember folks, the house always wins, and TP spent on gambling on these things could be much better spent elsewhere.
lol wow these things are now in game? thought it was bad enough in TF2 and other terrible mmos, but now turbine has sunk to a new low level. Really, they should just call these steel bound SCAMBOX cause if you buy the key, which you'll do since you'll probably never loot a key, all you'll get is probably 50 silver and 3 health potions.
The next thing is going to be like in AO buy this set of 10 boxes for 3000 TP and you may get a chance to win this beautiful mount, or a set of scrolls, or some money or another box, you get the picture (odds of winning the horse 1:10000000000000000000)
And how do you get rid of the thing? Is there some trick I am unaware of to destroying "special" items like this? Or do I now have to suffer the permanent loss of one non-shared storage slot for having the temerity to not spend Toilet Paper on the key?

Does dragging it out of your bags into open space and letting go give you the option to destroy it?

Or what's behind the curtain that Carrol Merryl is standing in front of...

If you don't want it, maybe you can put it in the Auction house?

Because of course, everyone has purchased AH slots or is a premium player?
..Still. I'm decidedly disturbed by this, it borders very much on 'pay to win' via a 'lottery pull' cash grab.;.. .Anyone who opens a box, please disclose its level range and the loot that was inside.

Nope. I outleveled it, so I can't open it at this point even if I want to. I tried dragging it out to "open air" (several times), no option to destroy it. I tried logging out and back in with it in my character's backpack thinking the game would get rid of it automagically (since I had outleveled it), but no go on that either.

Maybe it's a bug.
Perhaps try mailing it, then letting the mail expire.

They clearly come in different ranges. Mine was 10-19 (I got it when the character was about 1000 XP from 20, so woo hoo!). The OP's example was 20-29.
This is the first thing about LotRO which has actually made me angry (well, as angry as I'm gonna get about a computer game, which is "not very").

I don't care that I got it, I care that I can't get rid of it (I'll try again next time I log in, just to make sure I wasn't spazzing out with my dragging).

I've been in places/states where I couldn't drag stuff out to dispose of it. Maybe interacting with NPCs? Anyway, try again.
Have to say, these sound mighty lame to me. Guess they are win-win for Turbine. Either you buy keys, or sell them to someone who buys keys, or keep them hoping you get a key and need inventory space?
It's already happened
We called them 'race tokens' (Keg race/pie race) and 'pick axes' (Treasure hunt)
At least with the keg/pie there was a predictive solution to winning and a guarnateed reward on a correct outcome.
The pick-axes are 2 step blinds because you get a <Random> node, and the contents of the chest <if any> are random.
These however are worse than the treasure because it can be 'game related' and not simply cosmetic and its possible to out level them (and thus, how would you open that shiny box with the horse in it if you refused to pay?)

Why do you feel the need to be so snarky and argumentative? Especially toward a Dev that's just trying to give a player a quick solution? If he doesn't want to or can't auction it, he can give it away to someone who does want to buy the key.
Kinnie got a level 70-75 box and curiosity got the better of her so she spent 100 tp on a key.
She got a rose dye.
A rose dye.
One rose dye.
For 100 tp.
It's complete ####, I agree. Players have been saying since free to play launched about things like this, but Turbine has ignored these players and gone down the wrong road.

Works every time (unless you are getting > 20 every two weeks). Someone has to feed the Post Hobbits.
Although if they drop that frequently and can't be destroyed (and your account type keeps you from using the AH) I'd just turn off Auto-Loot in your UI Settings. That means 1-3 more clicks per mob kill, but it allows you to decide what to goes into inventory. (Old Sk00l Gamers remember cursed items all too well and *NEVER* use Auto-Loot!)

Ouch.... that just doesn't seem right. FIVE dyes... maybe? But I still wouldn't be happy with even that. Maybe it's a bug? Probably wouldn't hurt to submit it as such and let them work it out internally.
You definitely have a fortune on your hands, if you can sell your key quickly before people realise how bad the rewards are. Someone did just spend 100TP for a key after all.
