I am here in The Barrow Downs, working on some reputation items; and one of the Skellingtons dropped this item.
Steel-bound LootBox.
Anyone else get one?
Anyone open theirs, yet?
Anyone found a key?
Lawl, RIG's have crept into LOTRO. I've seen these things in *cough* Gaia Online *cough* (yes, yes, goodness knows what I was doing wasting my time there, but anyway).
The RIG's (random item generators) we're never worth Gaia Cash (bought with real cash ofc) spent to open them in Gaia, and I'm willing to bet they'll be a waste of time here. Remember folks, the house always wins, and TP spent on gambling on these things could be much better spent elsewhere.
lol wow these things are now in game? thought it was bad enough in TF2 and other terrible mmos, but now turbine has sunk to a new low level. Really, they should just call these steel bound SCAMBOX cause if you buy the key, which you'll do since you'll probably never loot a key, all you'll get is probably 50 silver and 3 health potions.
The next thing is going to be like in AO buy this set of 10 boxes for 3000 TP and you may get a chance to win this beautiful mount, or a set of scrolls, or some money or another box, you get the picture (odds of winning the horse 1:10000000000000000000)

Hehehe ... another ex Gaian
If you haven't been around Gaia the past weeks, you might not have seen them change the name RIG (Random Item Generator) to CI (Chance Item), they added a pre-CI-release sale so that the addicts can even get their chances earlier. And they also increased the amount of CI releases, you now get a new CI every 2nd week. And in every CI there's a really small chance to find that uber-rare uber-cute pet item ... kittens and chihuahua and whatnot.
And thats not even the end of the Gaia story ... no, they now do sales of the previous uber-rare chance items. Guess what, they sell them for cash, a LOT of cash (ie. 5000GC = 50$ !) !! Oh, bytheway ... if you order 5000GC for 50$ you will get an EXCLUSIVE item !
You can also try to earn the cash ingame, like you get 5GC for watching an advertisement video ... or better: watch 1000 video ads and get your rare item FOR FREE ...
I will surely NOT use any Lootbox ... uhm, well maybe ... if the put in a rare chance to find the uber-cute Golden Kitten Star

Wow scam boxes arrived to lotro. Whats next? Random store-only legacies, enchanting items?. No more 100% crit form guild recipes but a store-only option to get it?.
The world is filled with ideas to destroy mmos, I hope some people up there learn more about them.
And how do you get rid of the thing? Is there some trick I am unaware of to destroying "special" items like this? Or do I now have to suffer the permanent loss of one non-shared storage slot for having the temerity to not spend Toilet Paper on the key?

Does dragging it out of your bags into open space and letting go give you the option to destroy it?

Nope. I outleveled it, so I can't open it at this point even if I want to. I tried dragging it out to "open air" (several times), no option to destroy it. I tried logging out and back in with it in my character's backpack thinking the game would get rid of it automagically (since I had outleveled it), but no go on that either.

Maybe it's a bug.
Perhaps try mailing it, then letting the mail expire.

Works every time (unless you are getting > 20 every two weeks). Someone has to feed the Post Hobbits.
Although if they drop that frequently and can't be destroyed (and your account type keeps you from using the AH) I'd just turn off Auto-Loot in your UI Settings. That means 1-3 more clicks per mob kill, but it allows you to decide what to goes into inventory. (Old Sk00l Gamers remember cursed items all too well and *NEVER* use Auto-Loot!)

Why do you feel the need to be so snarky and argumentative? Especially toward a Dev that's just trying to give a player a quick solution? If he doesn't want to or can't auction it, he can give it away to someone who does want to buy the key.
What a surprise a random drop that requires a KEY you purchase from the store.
Well welcome to the world of store 1st, store 2nd, store 3rd and 4th.
I would laugh at this normally but the game has taken a major turn to store only.
Sorry Turbine but from what I currently see, this will be the last Turbine (sorry WB) MMO I will purchase. It was a good 5 year ride counting counting the time in Beta but I think you are going more than little overboard.
Anyone else flashing to the movie Seven when they read that flavor text?
I was actually surprised no one seemed to mention this in all these pages of posts. Hysterical Turbine.

Given that the indestructible flag is working as intended it leads me to think that there was really only one reason for introducing these. It's a fairly blatant attempt to force players into paying for storage space (either new or for keys to be able to get rid of the things).
For some players, it would be re-paying for something they've already paid for once before (if they are near capacity now).
Next, I expect to see one-armed bandits in The Prancing Pony that only take Turbine points....and of course you will be able to win raid level stuff if you're lucky to be sure folks play them.
I just turned off my auto-loot and don't bother picking up the boxes. Yes there is a small chance there maybe something worthwhile in them, but there is a limited amount of room in my bags and I don't want it junked up with indestructable boxes that are mostly full of rubbish I can grind for easily if I wanted it.
I don't care that I got it, I care that I can't get rid of it (I'll try again next time I log in, just to make sure I wasn't spazzing out with my dragging).

I've been in places/states where I couldn't drag stuff out to dispose of it. Maybe interacting with NPCs? Anyway, try again.
Have to say, these sound mighty lame to me. Guess they are win-win for Turbine. Either you buy keys, or sell them to someone who buys keys, or keep them hoping you get a key and need inventory space?

If you don't want it, maybe you can put it in the Auction house?

Because of course, everyone has purchased AH slots or is a premium player?
..Still. I'm decidedly disturbed by this, it borders very much on 'pay to win' via a 'lottery pull' cash grab.;.. .Anyone who opens a box, please disclose its level range and the loot that was inside.

They clearly come in different ranges. Mine was 10-19 (I got it when the character was about 1000 XP from 20, so woo hoo!). The OP's example was 20-29.
This is the first thing about LotRO which has actually made me angry (well, as angry as I'm gonna get about a computer game, which is "not very").

You've GOT to be kidding me.
Imagine this :
If I dump a bag of garbage in your front lawn, a bag so heavy that you are unable to get rid of it, and then I turn around and offer to have you pay me for the key to my truck so you can tow it away, that is the equivalent of the absurdity of this situation.
You guys DELIBERATELY made it so people cannot destroy this item in their inventory, just like the "bug" that caused Inn of the Forsaken to be unremovable in people's quest log taking up space. And you are telling us that we need to put this up on the AH to INFLICT this on someone else?
I have seen a lot of borderline business practice from Turbine, but this is without doubt a new low.
Why should we help you pass a CURSED item from people to people?
