Are you on rp servers? Because that would be a different issue I can't say anything about as I'm not on one. I still know a few roleplayers but in about 1 1/2 years I've never heard a complaint or even a discussion about emotes in game. Only in the forums I stumpled across it for the first time. So maybe I'm on the "wrong" server and we don't have those mystical griefers that drive everyone nuts until anyone using emotes get criminalized.
I stated bevor that ruining an event is something else. But unless someone does that purposly, they are not a griefer (yes I actually just read a proper definition ;-) ) Someone using an emote on a random player in a standard game situation is not anywhere near being a griefer.
And no, I'm not opposed to an opt out option, an emote-free event zone, or emote-free rp severs if that's what you people want. I just postet because it seemed to me like there was a general hate issue among players about this, and I don't think it's fair that a lot of people receive such reactions only because a few others misuse whatever they get.
I've had at least a few random groups where some people were at best grumpy or plain rude. Yes you can leave the group.
Yes, you can leave the group, or you can stay in it & keep whining. Your choice. But I'll bet you can quickly figure out which of them is more intelligent.
Regardless, it has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread, & why you think it does is utterly beyond me.
Fare you well ... let your life proceed by its own design
Nothing to tell ... let the words be yours, I'm done with mine.
Yes, Smartig, we are on an RP server. Let me, if I may, give you an example.....
Just last night, I was at a concert named "Ales and Tales", where different groups and individuals play songs, or tell stories, and there is usually a large crowd of folks dancing and listening.
After the concert was over and people were beginning to leave, I was explaining to a couple a certain way to do a certain dance that was rather cool looking and fun. While the couple was practicing as I watched, another couple came up and joined us, a Dwarf came over and played songs, and it was decided to expand the concept in a much more complicated way, involving 4 people getting their characters in exactly the right spot and turned exactly right, so they would pass each other in the steps without bumping each other. After much trial and error, it was really awesome to see the four of them passing each other in a coordinated dance.
Now, imagine if, in the middle of finally getting everything set and all the characters in exactly the right position, someone came along and cast /boast on them as they were dancing and filled with the excitement of finally getting it exactly right. Put yourself for just a second in their shoes, and try to understand the anger that such an occurance would generate. The dance interrupted and everyone needing to reset their character again; all that work for naught. Fortunately, the practice was concluded with no forced emotes disrupting anything.
You can argue that a disruption allows the players to practice getting in the right position again, but that totally misses the point. The fun was not in getting into position, the fun was in watching the result. Those four folks may not do that same dance the same way again. But we all had a great deal of fun at that time.
You are likely right that painting everyone with the same brush is not fair. But while last night happened without incident, there have been FAR too many times where just such disruptions have occurred, and has been said, it's to the point now where patience in some folks is just paper thin.

I was replying to a post which was a reply to another post of mine from earlier, if you had read my entire post + the one before then you would understand and could have given a more qualified reply. Small sidesteps like that happen in a normal discussion, which I hope this still is. I was not in any post trying to make a scientifically approved comparison of any sort, I was just trying to explain my point.
Thanks Dworin I think I understand you better now.
And in spite of the title of this thread, I really prefer the compromise position: the opt-out. That way, those who use the emotes responsibly can still have their fun, while folks can be protected from those who would use the emotes irresponsibly. I think it would be a shame if you lost the emotes, I really do. I just want protection from them.

Oh my, I just saw this referred to as "bullying and abuse". Isn't there a federal bureau you can QQ to for that now or something? I'm glad I don't take myself so seriously within the game, I'd never be able to enjoy it.
I believe there are deeds tied to the use of these, so unless they remove the deeds, which I assume come with TP rewards as well as the permanent skill (uh oh...), I can't see the use of these going away soon.

Try Reading the thread difficult as that may be......
We are asking for a personal OPT OUT a toggle......
Not asking Turbine to take them away....
Well as a last resort only maybe but a middle ground can be reached with a toggle.
Do not feel bad about not takeing yourself seriously We do not either.
how does this even have 41 pages...... i read the first 3, people need to stop being control freaks, it's like the person you have a joke with and they get all serious at you, there's a reason these people aren't invited to parties lol. you all need to cry less about it, if it's such a bad issue, carry your own consumables and do it back.
btw, when i hit the level cap, and a white tree encompassed my character as he ascended, glory and power surrounding him, he was suddenly "slapped like a hobbit" and found himself on the ground with a bag over his head! was i a little put out that my screenshot was ruined? yeah i was, did i find it funny and now have a cool story to tell? yes. it actually enhanced my experience, if you saw it happen to a friend you'd prolly laugh, and if we can't laugh at ourselves too we truly are doomed. just think, who makes the best target for these things? the person that reacts! try laughing and seeing the funny side.
You will find that conversational range increases dramatically when you talk about what you think, rather than what you know.

In other words, if you can't beat them, join them? *sigh* You really do not get it, at all.
It'll come as a surprise to you, but I don't want to be invited to their party. Nor will I invite them to mine. For all practical purposes, once they get on my ignore list, to me they cease to exist. I hope they see the funny side, I certainly do.

The op-out would be nice. If not that at least disable their use in quest areas (ex. the garden with the shrew stoop) so they cannot disrupt people who doing quests during events.
It is strange on my server I hardly see anyone spam any kind of forced emote, except for at the start of instances as a bit of fun to get the group going. Though I can tell out there, someone will abuse it but the things on a shared 5 minute cool-down. So seriously how harassed can you actually get?
Taking me a loooong time to use up all mine respectfully to get the deed done since they changed it and as some has said in this thread already to others...no I will not destroy them as I worked to get them.
Since you get the ability to change into RP mode on most servers I guess they could attach the ability to opt out on certain emotes which make you fall over, with that change. So players will know they can't use emotes on them.
This could become problematic for people trying to complete deeds, as they need to actually be able to cast it on people sometimes to be able to advance in it. So if the idea takes off, then it will be almost impossible to complete the deeds (I know you guys would love that but it is also equally selfish as with those who try to abuse the emotes).
Another potential problem is people can still abuse the emotes by using them and going into the "opt" out mode so no one can do them back, it would take out the fun of everyone joining in for the fun and it would be replaced with anger, which as we all know, trolls love to feed on that.

Well, you may only be able to do it to someone every five minutes, but it can be done to you as often as packets arrive at your computer. e.g. after finishing up the last quests in Frostbluff I was running from one side of town to the other to turn them in I was knocked down four times.
So I logged off, didn't log on for 4 months after that execpt to pay for housing. If I had been playing during that time I might have dropped 20 bucks on the game, but instead Turbine got nothing, and even though I am playing a bit now, Turbine will continue to get nothing from me until I get an op-out. So please spend an extra 20 dollars on the game to make up from the lost revenue from me.
I would not mind if it was once every few days, but you gotta admit 4 times in less tha 20 seconds is a bit extreme. Since this had to be 4 different people, there was no griefing goiing on, but from my side of the computer screen it was no different than if there was no cooldown and the same person did all 4, other than if it was the same person at least a report would have been in order.
i completed frostbluff festival with multiple characters all feast beast as well. never got emoted once...
well good for you!!!
but the real reason i replied is....why is you join date zero???????? Never seen that before. Are you having any problems with your account? If so contact account support, because it looks like your database record my be a bit hosed.

Wow, congratulations! Many of us are not nearly as lucky as you, however, so it's no wonder you cannot understand why we feel so strongly that getting some kind of opt-out is essential to the continued enjoyment of the game..

you have been asking for it for years, none has been given, you are still here. it can't be that essential now can it? let's be totally truthful. you always exaggerate your claims. maybe that's why turbine isn't buying it?

But Turbine has made modifications to the emote timers, slowing down their use. That in itself can be viewed as a tacit admission by Turbine that these things aren't quite working as they originally intended. As others have pointed out, the change merely shifts some annoyance from the emotees to the emoters. Those being hit can still be hit, albeit slower (in theory; in practice, multiple emoters can still cause frequent interruptions), so they still aren't content. Those using the emotes can't use them as fast as before, so they aren't content, either.
As for still being here, the whole part of the money that would have been given to Turbine but was not as a direct result of these items flew right over your head, didn't it?
I know, I said I quit, so why am I posting? 'Cause there ain't no Blogorette patch.

*sigh* It's too bad you have to accuse me of lying, when I am not lying. But whatever.
Yes, I'm still here, because I still hold out hope that Turbine will see the error of their ways and fix things. One of these days Eukwen is going to say to me, "let's play *XYZ* game, instead of this" and I'll be gone.
In the meantime, I am considering finding the e-mail address of MeE and sending them e-mails of complaint. if Turbine won't listen to us here on the forums, then maybe they'll listen to the people who hold their license.

Create a second (f2p) account. Log in a character from that account as well as from your primary account. Spam away to your hearts content.
So if the idea takes off, then it will be almost impossible to complete the deeds (I know you guys would love that but it is also equally selfish as with those who try to abuse the emotes).
The general form that an "opt out" should take, as has been hashed out in these threads, is to credit the emote user with having used to emote for deed purposes even of his target has opted out of being affected.
Another potential problem is people can still abuse the emotes by using them and going into the "opt" out mode so no one can do them back, it would take out the fun of everyone joining in for the fun and it would be replaced with anger, which as we all know, trolls love to feed on that.
It has also be frequently suggested that, if you have the "opt out" set on so you can't be affected, then you can't *use* forced emotes, either.
*sigh* It's too bad you have to accuse me of lying, when I am not lying. But whatever.

Your wasting your time with him. He always says people are lying or exaggerating about things. Quite frankly I am getting sick & tired of it.
excellent. looks like this thread can be closed then.
Care to adress the rest of my post, where I explain why this change was not a solution to the problem? No, of course you don't, you just prefer to snip parts out of context and try to apply different meanings to them. Classic troll activity, in addition to being just plain bad manners. I'm not surprised you oppose an opt-out, since your statements consistantly reinforce my theory that you are one of those people who simply likes to annoy others.
I know, I said I quit, so why am I posting? 'Cause there ain't no Blogorette patch.
My memory is long. I remember many lies. Many half-truths. Many exaggerations. I exposed them before and will again if need be. The ones doing it know who they are and so do I.

Sadly neither side of this debate have "true numbers" to support their side of the debate. I am one of the ones that feel that turbine should either remove them or give me an opt out option. Several times during various events i have had people "force emote" me so that they can get to a item before me, or to prevent me from getting to the item i need. tis the kind of behavior that makes players want to remove forced emotes completely. If you dont want forced emotes removed and or modified then dont use them to "grief" another player. Enough complaints will eventually get something done. probably to the dislike of all sides of the debate.

Reason: typo and content
Several times during various events i have had people "force emote" me so that they can get to a item before me, or to prevent me from getting to the item i need.
It may have been submitted as a question (we'll never know unless someone comes forth and says they asked), and then not picked for giving an answer. I will admit that the choice of questions to answer was, on the whole, rather....light weight. (But I didn't expect much more anyway.)
As this is the strongest thread asking for some change to the forced emotes, I wanted to put my name firmly in the camp of those who want an opt-out option for them. I found another thread first, and had said my piece there, so I'm going to just post what I said below, and then address a couple of other things under it.
Ok, I'll fess up a bit. It's not even the emotes that I mind all that much. What I DO mind is when someone hits me with one of those things, and I send them my canned tell asking politely for them not to do that again, only to be laughed at, told to stop playing LoTRO, told that I'm overreacting, told "it's just a game", and worse. I've had people swear at me about being a stupid b**** if I don't like them hitting me with those. I've also been told to go home and whine to my mother.
So to reiterate, it's not the emotes themselves I take issue with, it's the disrespect that often follows them. I play LoTRO because I'm having a rough time of things in the real world, and normally, it's nice to escape for a bit into one of my all-time favourite literary worlds. Sadly, when people start hitting me with those emotes, and then have the nerve to be rude to me when I nicely ask them to stop, LoTRO doesn't feel like an escape anymore, and THAT is what I don't like about them.
I know another thread on this very board is calling for the removal of them altogether. I won't go that far, because those few of you who use them and are nice about it deserve to have your fun too. However, for those of you that like to follow me around because I dared to ask you to stop, I think I deserve a way to forcibly stop you without having to resort to reporting you for harassment. I believe reporting for that should be used only in cases where someone is truly harassing you, such as in and out of game stalking (which happens to be why I quit another well-known MMO). Having to use it to keep emote spammers from hassling me takes away from people who NEED to report someone for a more serious reason, I think.
Yes, the thread I had mentioned in my other post was this one, and I've spent the last couple of days reading every entry in it. Someone already mentioned that any time someone swears at me, I should report them, and I do.
One thing I hadn't mentioned was that I usually play LotRO with my husband. Thanks to the forced emotes, he refuses to sign in during festivals, under any circumstances. I've even offered to stay up late so we could play when hardly anyone else is one, but he won't do it. So not only do the emotes disrupt the game we chose to play, it also disrupts the time we'd normally be spending together. Considering that we don't play many games together, due to differing tastes in games, it's really upsetting to have one of the few that we both enjoy disrupted because he's tired of dealing with rude people. When something in a game starts affecting real life, which these emotes do for quite a few people, then something needs to change.
If any of you who've mentioned writing letters to Turbine's bosses are serious about it, please message me, as both my husband and I would sign such a letter in a heartbeat.
I, for one, have mentioned sending an e-mail to MeE. I am still considering it; it's not a step I will take lightly. My hope is still that Turbine will address the issue, finding a way to make nearly everyone (except the griefers) happy.
Estellost, loving husband of the wonderful Shinarra
Where it comes to letters, the best approach is paper, not e-mail. Keep it very polite and lay out your grievanc coherently and succinctly.
I wouldn't write to SZC/MEE. I'd write to WB or Time-Warner. Corporate addresses are available as are the names of CEOs.
--W. H. Heydt

yeah. My thinking is that Turbine apparently is not listening to us on the forums, perhaps they'd listen to the people with the license, if enough folks wrote them about it. It may be a paper letter to Turbine and WB would be better to begin with.
*edit* Just today I was thinking about buying some TP so I could get a few things at the store, had the bundle picked and all, then cancelled the purchase. I just can't see spending extra money when Turbine apparently continues to ignore a legitimate problem.

I have discovered yet another reason to support the "opt out" for forced emotes. I was leveling an alt of mine in the Shire today, and while I was at Sandson's Farm, I was suddenly hit with the D.R.A.G.O.N. emote. While the fire was fading from my character, I looked at my combat log and politely asked the person who had done it not to do it again.
At this point, I got the message "Player X is offline." I figured they'd logged out before I could say anything, and then I noticed something. I was being followed by a player in Session Play - and they'd hit me with that emote while they were in the form of a chicken. If the game hadn't been having so many problems with people being able to log in, I'd have stopped playing for the day right there.
