I've tried, I'd say, at least on ten separate occasions using different codes (always the code for that day). Every single time I get the error “The code you entered is not valid”.
I follow the directions to the letter, but the code from that page has never, ever worked for me.
Anyone have any ideas?

Are you logged into a character when you enter it? Most of those freebies are for one character only, so you need to be logged into a character (not using the store on the Character Selection Screen) to make them work. At least that would be my assumption.

There is at least four different places where you can enter codes. You would not be the first person to end up trying to enter a code in a panel that does not accept that code.
The last person that was having this problem was on the MyAccount site trying to enter a Lotro store code as a expansion product key. It was not working at all well. It is unfortunate that the system does not give a good corrective action like - you can not use this code here - try over there
Unless stated otherwise, all content in this post is My Personal Opinion.
First, Yes I am always logged into a character.
Second, I am in game when I try.
I click the store icon on the hot button bar (far right I think it is).
I select an item I want to purchase. There is a screen that says, something to the effect of: If you have a code enter it here and hit “apply” then proceed with purchasing your item.
Also, I’ve tried the “quick” purchase option as well as the “cart” purchase option. And, if it is of any importance, I am a VIP member as well.
I believe skate IS talking about the free item of the week sales.
What you need to do is
(a) open the store
(b) find the item you want
(c) add it to your cart
(d) click My Cart
(e) in the box that says "Enter Code", enter the code.
(f) click Apply Coupon
(g) The Cart Total changes to 0 (if that was your only item)
(h) click Place order
Just wanted to say thanks to Nakiami -- I was having the same issue and the steps you suggested worked. I was going on a (perhaps faulty) memory I had of the last time I snagged an item of the week (months ago now), and all you had to do was imput the code and it added the "free" item automatically to your order... but that no longer works (it gives you the "not valid" error as stated). Adding the item manually then adding the code to make the TP cost = 0 for the item does, however, work perfectly.

Thanks for the tip in this thread , I was having the same problem.
The key is that you need to add the bonus item in your cart and then apply the coupon. I always assumed that when you add the coupon to your existing cart you get as a 'bonus' the item the code is applicable to. No, you need to add that bonus item then apply the code or you get the 'ivalid code' error.
