Exactly what is the point? You mailed soup to an alt, and got soup... Were you expecting a steak?

The profanity filter blocks the first word of the title of the soup.

Indeed, it's become apparent that chickens are profane. I rather wish the system would have simply vanished your email rather than mask the horrific word, since this feels like an attempt by the extreme moderates amoungst us to gradually and subtly push their foul agenda upon our children -- quite the feather in their cap. We must stand against this half-baked plan lest our schools crack under the pressure.

Naturally I'm establishing a new cult based on this revelation. As soon as I get all of my tax exemption paperwork sorted I'll post a box for you to send donations to. We don't have a solid plan just yet so our staff will be winging it, but they're willing to resort to good old fashioned leg work if necessary, and will just keep pushing until they are fried. Anytime our foes make a move we'll be ready to scramble a response team to do what they can, even if that's just to scratch the surface. If they lay a trap, we'll hatch a plan. If it seems like they are pulling things over easy, we'll poach some more talent from other flocks.

We'll make sure to keep you abreast of any developments as they occur.

The problem will be fixed thanks to the acquisition of Turbine by WB. Due to IP rights obtained for Harry Potter by WB the soup will be renamed to "That soup which must not be named".

Man you should be glad the soup arrived at all and only leaked a little on the outside (which made the text illegible), put it in something safe next time, like a jar or a bottle.

Just don't send it via Quick Post.

Avoiding nosey hobbits is bad enough, but to avoid nosey and hungry hobbits at the same time? It's too much to ask of the poor mail delivery hobbitses.

I was going to put in a suggestion that they added badminton as new hobby but it seems this will be impossible as the flying missile that goes over the net would be considered too indecent. I'll just have to continue enraging (on my burg) crebain and swatting them back and forth to a partner using fish slappers or a frying pan.

Fortunately such censorship does not exist in my country as that flavour soup is my husband's favourite and he'd be devastated if it was removed from the supermarket shelves on the grounds of profanity.

It is not the difficulty. It is the cost of doing so. You are dealing with a high churn - part of the code base.

What is interesting is that players find and report these problems at zero cost to Turbine. The developers do not do anything. One of the Hunter skills has been stepped on for years.

I thought I remembered someone saying that the company responsible for the profanity filter was, or probably was, a separate entity. If so, I'd imagine the "profanity" involved is distinctive and ubiquitous enough that the filtering company wouldn't be able to do much anyway, and Turbine's developers wouldn't have a whole lot of control over the situation.

Does anyone else remember the fairly well-publicised case of one Shirley Bab<censored-word>, who - unable to register her actual, legal name as a username - resorted to calling herself Ms. Bab<correct-medical-synonym-for-censored-word> instead?

In any case, I'm wondering if the Profane Soup was thusly named as a sort of silent protest to said filtering... and either way, I think it's utterly hilarious.

Hahahahah!! I found that very funny! Can you tell? :P

I had a very short conversation with a friend about this particular recipe ingame not long ago, and making a search on Wiki for it, they found it was originally a Scottish type of food. Can't think why though. (leeks - from Scotland probably) But it has been one of my favourites for a long time. I would buy it quite regularly from my local food store or supermarket.

I've wondered for a long time why it has such a name, considering how profane its name starts with.
I never expected anyone else to see it as such though.... not even an ingame profanity filter.

So I guess it comes down to, was the Turbine group (or individual) responsible for placing this item into the game, doing it as a statement against the profanity filter or are they just ignorant to the fact that there is a profanity filter. Seems they would have a list of what names they couldn't use for in-game items, regardless of the fact that this is the actual name of a soup that people eat in the real world.

So...I look up the Wiki on the food in question. I discover that it's a very popular food...in Scottland. It is eaten quite frequently and has prunes in it. Then I'm thinking about the very mechanics of the use of bagpipes. The thoughts that came to mind are rather disturbing. It does however explain their love for rolling hills and wide open spaces.

I rather like to amuse myself on how exactly these things happen to come to pass. I can only think of how bothersome some workers can be at times relentlessly pestering their supervisor to allow them to push the limits a tad. So after 20 or so rejected names designed to drive the boss crazy, the boss caved in. Hence, we have the name that shall not be named and a office of giggling developers.

I don't think the choice of said soup is an act of defiance or cheekiness by the devs, I think it's genuine attempt to tie in a traditional British dish (as most of the cooking recipes are) with the list of limited ingredients available especially incorporating some T7 farmed goods. Of course it is possible that the inclusion of leeks (farmed at T7) was in itself planned as they deliberately DID want to include this cheeky little dish

I tried to make a dwarf today, and what I got was a stern warning that if I used the word I wanted to name the dwarf or any variation of it, I would be perma banned.

I was somewhat shocked, as I did not know the word was such a vulgar word. So I typed it in again to make sure I read the warning right. Yes. Sure did.

The word is for a sedimentary rock. They are used to ignite flame in a lighter. A city in Michigan is named after this sedimentary rock and if turned into a compound word with "stone" would be then name of a popular cartoon show.

Oops. I hope I don't get banned for describing this word.

Well, guess we will have to look for another name!

The in-game chat filter also seemed to have a dislike for the word ‘Kiz’ (shortened version of the name of one of my old kinleader’s characters). Never figured that one out. Hopefully I’ll never need to tell anyone that I’m moving to the village of Scunthorpe …

Did they release a T7 recipe for the British steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants) commonly served with custard?

Has me wondering as well. I can't imagine such a thing. Skeptic in me wants a screenshot, but I may well try to make a character named Flint now just to see what it does.

I'm wondering if it's the copyright filter hitting that one, not the profanity one.

Not that I ever heard. Is it possible that there was another character by that name on that server, and the character-creation screen gave the wrong error message?

Could we have somebody in CR take a look at this and pass it on to the appropriate people?

I'd never heard "flint" was a euphemism for anything, Urban Dictionary doesn't turn up anything, so no, not a profane word--which leads to a copyright conflict, of which we have oodles, particularly a dwarf by the name of Flint Fireforge.

Reminds me of when I tried to name my pilgrim herald FriarTuck. I got a forbidden message or somesuch.

I did successfully name my swordswoman MaidMarian however, so I doubt it had anything to do with a Robin Hood copyright matter. More likely the F and uck in FriarTuck.

    Or perhaps the liquor store...

so what I am wondering is...if one was to link the soup into GLFF, if one could be reported and banned for profanity:P

I haven't figured out the profanity filter when it comes to names. I just created a Hobbit Burg alt and attempted to use the name Nightshade. I actually expected it to be taken but instead got the message... "That name appears to be gibberish. Please choose another name." (or something along those lines.) Apparently the name was censored? I changed it to Niteshade and it went through with no problem. Go figure.

How about Flint Ironheart: http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Flint_Ironheart? Sounds like that's exactly what happened - and I agree that customer service might want to verify that people are being given the correct error message in the case of trying to use a name already taken by an NPC.

For that matter, I wish that the error messages between "this name is taken by a player" and "this name is taken/reserved for an NPC" were more clear (I think they come as "this name is unavailable" for the latter and "this name is taken" for the former).

It was blocked due to too many consonants in a row (ghtsh) - I believe the allowable limit is 4 in a row... five is right out.

Thanks. I did not know that. Kind of a dumb rule but I guess that's par for the course.
