I can't keep him alive! I can get the banners fine, but by the time I'm taking the third down and I don't think I'm slow about it, he is stuck on the right hand side of the barricade under wave after wave of mobs - 3 at a time with no pauses. He seems to have absolutely no ICMR and even when I pulled mobs off him and ran them over to the other clusters of npcs he just drops really fast.
No idea, I've done this on an LM, burg, guard, and hunter, all at level 73 with no probelms. Get the banners, kill the boss, the end. Not trying to be mean, but this is not a hard fight. The only hint I can give is to make sure not to engage any of the waves ever, only engage the mob at each banner, and then the boss. If you catch a wave yourself that'll make it way harder than it needs to be.

No, I wouldn't have described it as a hard fight either. I have no problems staying alive myself and the banners are easy enough. The problem is Grimwold who gets stuck in a corner, swamped and dies after a very short time.
Sorry I should have specified who wasn't staying alive
Well I don't know what happened with that, I did it really easily this evening. I think I must have had a buggy version last night because the way he got stuck in a corner and mobbed was ridiculous. Odd.
I'm having massive trouble with this on my Minstrel. Grimbold always gets trapped on teh right side and swamped, no matter what I do.
Once I got the Banners all done, and the boss killed but couldn't heal Grimbold because I had so much aggro with stupid mobs. The stupidest thing about this, is I cannot progress to any other quests until this one is done, Iron Pit won't open till i complete this stupid quests. Great planning Turbine.
My guard did this very easy, horrible fo rmy minnie.
I almost had this, I think, but as I was tagging the 4th banner, he got swarmed all by his lonesome on the western(?) edge. Not happy... getting pretty frustrated.

SIX tries without a win... 5 times he gets stuck by himself at the west edge and they spawn in 3's every 30 seconds... he dies AND I can't get to that banner cause they spawn before I can get the guard killed.
Last time out I went over and killed them till he FINALLY got free. I had less than 1000 morale and the had a little over 3000. And when I turn around there's me, and him and the other named NPC and NO OTHER Roherrim -- and then about 12 tribesmen arried and that was that.
I can get the first three banners easily enough, but that one spawns a trio every 30 seconds - which is NOT enough time to kill the guard AND burn it before I get interrupted and swarmed.
Don't know how you guys are doing it so that it's easy. Eleven attempts to burn that banner in six runthrus -- NO even close successes.
I don't have a specific strategy for you here, but a few things I've noticed:
* If you ignore the attackers, then your allies on the west side will die pretty quick because they don't coordinate well together (like one will just stand there and watch while the others fight). The only way to make them work together is to drag the attackers around to the ones that aren't participating.
* If you want to help your allies, it seems to be useful to grab aggro on things and drag them to other defenders so that more of your buddies are hitting them (example: drag guys from the west side all the way to the east side so that like 10 guys are fighting them instead of like 3). Just be careful that you don't leave 2 attackers and 1 defender behind while you drag 1 attacker and 2 defenders away.
* NPCs seem to heal pretty quick out of combat, but almost none at all in combat.
* I'm sure everyone knows this, but I guess it's worth stating anyway: you can always heal the NPCs just like any player character except that you have to find them and click on them with your mouse first. If you want to do this, you might look into how to detach tooltips to make it easier.
* I'm also sure everyone knows this one, but also worth stating anyway: crowd control skills like a minstrel's fear skill can make the difference since it changes it from grimbold versus 3 guys to grimbold versus 2 guys
I've also had trouble with some characters (especially healers), but hopefully these tips will help. Or at least spark some new ideas for you!
I did this last week without much trouble on a burglar. All I did was tag each flag as fast as possible (killing the one guard), then killed the boss when he spawned (after letting his friends get ahead of him). Grimbold didn't come close to dying.
A spaceship from another star / They ask me where all the people are
I tell them I'm the only one / There was a war, but I must have won
i went behind the rocks used a bow on the banner guard killed him then torched the banners ,when chief showed up shot him and led him to the soldiers still alive it was easy. it was my 4th attempt i always had 4 guy jump me as i tried to burn banners was starting to get annoying hope this stategy helps
Three times I tried and failed but the fourth time was an easy slam dunk. Here's my observations:
(On a lvl 77 Mini in WS)
Based on what others said in this thread I pulled the first wave of mobs into the left side of the camp. That kept Grimbold occupied there and seemed to concentrate the Rohirrim together a bit more. I didn't stay to fight, I let the troops grab the agro.
Now the important part. This is all about how fast you can burn the banners before your troops and Grimbold run their morale down. Therefore it's all about staying behind the spawns of dunlendings and ALL about fast DPS in your battle with the banner guard.
The first 3 times I had a lvl 65 second age weapon with 6 major legacies (my favorites), 3 starlit crystals, scroll bumped to lvl 70, at least 5 or 6 legacy tier upgrade scrolls and a Beleriand damage scroll. The winning time I went in with a so-so lvl 77 third ager, maxed at lvl 60, common damage and no crystals.
Lemme tell you the DPS on the lvl 77 third age cut the battle time by about 30% to 40%.
I went back after burning all 4 banners, Grimbold was at 80% morale, the Dunlending Captain showed up and we took him out in seconds.
As a Mini we like to think we are WS DPS brutes on a level with Runekeepers and Hunters. It's really our higher survivabilty that allows us to keep that illusion. That lvl 65 was chock full of anthem friendly legacies that made me a buff machine but most of the buff math does not seem to be affected by LI level the same way. Mini's if you solo at all go upgrade that weapon immediately.
