I've been playing LOTRO on and off since the original game alpha, most of the time on NA servers (elendilmir).
I've been active in PvP for pretty much the entire time, way back to the days of getting 1-2 renown per kill on my non-WS minsrel lol.
About a year or so ago I made an account on Snowbourn, as I have been working/studying abroad and wanted to be able to play with others on my timezone.
The first thing I noticed when playing on Snowbourn (back when it was under CM) was that my latency was significantly lower (obvious, I'm closer to the server geographically). Also, general lag was less.
When the change was made to US, my latency went back to what it usually was on Elendilmir. It's higher than it was on the old Snowbourn, but it's still low and doesn't cause any issues in game.
PvP on the other hand...is a much different story. I'm not sure if they gave Snowbourn an old server or what the story is, but the amount of skill and server lag when there are large battles in the Ettens is just way too high.
I've PvPd on Elendilmir for years, both from the US and from Europe, and it haven't seen such skill lag for a long while. Literally, a raid on raid fight on Snowbourn at the moment (24v24) causes a skill lag of at least 3-4 seconds (which is a lot), if not more. This isn't lag coming from my PC due to graphics or anything, it's a server wide issue.
Is Turbine planning on working on this? Are they aware? Were the EU servers given older or less powerful servers than the current NA servers? I just don't see how it could be that bad.
Hey, I got the same problem yesterday night, awful slow performance of snowbourn server. I have to confirm that since moving the EU servers to NA there are much more lags and server slowdons.
I often wonder whether the extra lag on snowbourn (or just EU servers) is due to the mylotro sync thing. I know that the sync from in game data is still ongoing and not everything is completed (well, my character certainly doesn't seem linked up properly!).
But, lag certainly seems to be kicked off by the pvp, but once the server lag has started it affects everyone. I remember a couple of weeks back we went into OD during a laggy period in the moors. Everyone in the raid had constand 1-4s skill lag throughout the entire thing which forced us to do poison on tier 1 as the lag made tier 2 impossible :S
Whatever the actual cause is, I hope they fix it soon!

I didn't realize the etten server lag actually affected the entire server at the time (meaning PvE land too), that makes it even worse

I've no idea what the actual set up is but they've probably just got one server. Therefore a high amount of traffic in any one area will put a strain on the entire server & the last couple of nights have seen some fairly heavy fighting for Tol Ascarnen (approx 2 raids on each side...)

True.
I do remember cases, though, where certain areas would be heavily lagged but other areas not....then again I've also experienced server wide lag so, I dno.
But the lag issue on this server is much bigger than on the NA servers like brandywine and elendilmir, which leads me to believe they gave us old-tech or smaller servers
Pls upgrade Snowbourn server....its unplayable when raid on raid + some soloers and npcs are close. Skill lag, server lag....network OK - loss 0, ping 100-150

There's also the possibility that snowbourn simply has a high population compared to most other servers, so that means that along with more pvp happening, there are more pve instances being run concurrently, all of which takes up server resources.
Either way though, more server resources please

This does make me worry about what is going to happen with the increase of creeps coming from ftp . There were times over the weekend e.g. the night when the minstrel raid was out and we met the freep raid on the plains , that the game was just not playable at all for me even on lowest level graphics , and i usually run ultra high . It reminded me of going into one of the towns in the Age of Conan open Beta , and that's not good ......

There's actually a site somewhere that offers server stats, including population, and snowy isn't the highest. I'll try and track it down..
The state of the server on launch day was horrible, and a week after it's still bad. How do you not prepare for this? Anyone could have expected this amount of traffic, they should have been ready.
Finally... I've been searching for something close to my problem. I have to Crtl/Alt/Delete my way out of the game because the game crashes every 10 minutes on Snowbourne due to lag that roots me to the ground leaving me unable to use my skills or do anything at all. I can turn, but not move and then after 5 minutes if I dont do anything it will say "connection lost". This is rubbish.. I've made progress on that account and refuse to leave for another less laggy world unless Turbine transfers it for me. As VIP and a purchaser of RoI, I am thoroughly offended. This has happened to me for three days, and the game is impossible to log into during the US daytime: I have to play during 1am to 6am for the "best" results which means instead of not being able to play at all, I get to play but have to shut down the client and re-log in every ten minutes.
Tried again a few minutes ago: it froze on me after I picked my character from the selection screen. I heard the ingame music and background noises but it was stuck on the load page between character selection and the actual game.
And 100Mbps connection + a new Sony Vaio computer means internet and computer aren't the issue: it's clearly a game issue.
My client has been freezing a lot also. It happens when I zone into new areas (or cross into a new area on the map). It's annoying, the client just freezes and the mouse pointer turns into the standard one and not the lotro one. The only thing I can then do is ctrl-alt-del and then there's a window "the lotro client has stopped working."

And launch again....
Happens a LOT.
Though it happens alot anywhere for me, it was causing me endless issues when I crossed from Eastern Breefields into Nen Harn and from Nen Harn into Far Chetwood for a few quests that put me in those areas.
My most recent time ingame (around the time of my first post on this thread) I was smelting and refining ores and I had to log in three seperate times to finish making 50 some odd silver and barrow iron ingots.
I'm going to try logging into one of my Darrowdelf accounts to see what happens..
EDIT: Darrowdelf was pretty much flawless except for the horse riding where it looks like you're doing a different type of riding... But I've noticed that on Snowbourne so it's not world specific and can simply be changed by dismounting and remounting. Did have a problem where I teleported to a different area and my weapons showed up about 1-2 seconds before my armour, and then another second before my actual character showed up but it wasn't gamebreaking.

Reason: Update
Logged in at 2:09pm CST and am forced to ctrl-alt-del out of the game at 2:21pm CST.
Clearly they're in no hurry to fix this issue or even say anything about it. No customer support. I wish I knew the quality of their service before paying for it in excitement of how much I enjoyed the graphics and the concept of the game. I'm beginning to feel that I wasted my money.
i had this yesterday twice for the first time.. never had freezing problems before but still its lagging like hell. Even the instances are lagging with 6 man.
The thing is, there is only 1 reason for me to pay this game; PvP. I m playing this game since beta, i have loads of characters (which brings me lots of TPs by only playing game, not deed grinding like mad) i have 10k TPs atm. (didnt buy any).
There is absolutely no reason for me to pay for VIP, since PvP is not playable for me with those lags and stuff. And thats why i m playing premium atm, and will keep playing like this for a long while it seems...
We had great expectations from Turbine when we heard about the merge, unfortunately everything goes worse...

That is a very black-and-white statement. Because you have a good connection and a good computer it's clearly a game issue? It could be lots of things causing this problem. I also have a good machine and a good connection, and I never crash, freeze or lag. If it was a game issue, clearly I would be experiencing the same issues, or wouldn't I?
I do not have any freezing or lagging problems. I did used to have it when I first started playing LOTRO around 6 months ago. I am using Windows 7 x64. I also crashed a lot when switching back and forth to windows using alt-tab. What I did was the following:
- Right click my launcher and hit properties
- Click on Compatability
- Check "Run this program in compatability mode for: Windows XP Service Pack 3".
- Also check "Run this program as an administrator".
After this I never experienced any freezing or crashing issues anymore, only once when trying to use a plugin after the ROI launch on the first day, but that's all. Hope this will work for others also.
Since the content update Snowbourn has been almost unplayable. Server lag is extremely high, and some instances are just impossible.
New content is great, though I'd love to be able to enjoy it... if it was a bug or something, I could understand that. Things happen.
But this is a question of server quality, and it's obvious you just can't handle the population of this server when new content is released. I think it's time to replace the hamsters.

Indeed, so Fing annoying...
Was levelling as group tonight and it was incredibly annoying for people to randomly disconnect during encounters or lag in general. This was both in Dunland and earlier doing group quests in Limlight Gorge. Hope they will do something about it.
"Don't see Lord of the Rings as a fantasy, don't think of it as a long gone myth that never actually happened, just know Middle-Earth exists, or existed, and it is happening as you watch it.''
Today was probably the worst day since the update. I even lagged getting stuff out of my vault. PPl getting stuck in loading screen or dcing again right after the login took the fun out of playing. I hope this will be fixed soon. I understand that many ppl came bk from other games to try out the new update which leads to a higher server load, but whith server performance like this, I understand when they will leave again soon for other things to do and maybe even take others with them. I'd say it rly is time to react and it doesn't look like a sever reboot helps much.
Lightening T2 was just a case of praying! Acid and having to jump was scary as hell... server lag, broken doors to content.. something needs to happen within the next week or so...
Come on GM's we know your reading these threads! You're paid to be forum trolls!

Strange thing was that last thursday we did lightning HM as well and lag was not so bad... definitely doable. Then we went to F&F and we were having loads of trouble with lag then. Wipes because everyones skills were just not firing, trash mobs resetting completely because somehow they went through the closed gate... just annoying as hell. We were at the last trash group when the broadcast came about the server reboot so we gave up for the night. I haven't done a raid since then.
GM's won't be able to help us. What we need is a community officer or a dev that is reading this and let them go see how bad it really is. Then they need to escalate it up to their manager and give it the highest priority to fix. The game is becoming quite unplayable. U6 broke something and we need to have it unbroken asap.
Last night in acid during the first "jump" cycle, lag spike and 11/12 people instakilled. Whilst it was a bit funny, the lag spikes are really very bad at the moment. These are server end as they are affecting everyone in the raid. Please get them fixed.
since U6 lag is killing any real fun on Snowbourn. Every instance / raid is becoming - let's hope we get thru this without a lag spike at the wrong time...
A server reboot on short notice did not help abit.
Something has to happen and it has to happen fast.
Competitive raiding is out of the question now...we've basically just been alt-farming Lightning wing, and not bothering with the rest since the update.
I logged in yesterday just to do some questing in the new zone, got too frustrated after 30 minutes of constant lag spikes and skill delays and just logged off.
We were brave enough to try F&F T2 tonight, we wiped like 3-5+ times 'cause of it but we managed to kill it at the end lol! As others mentioned above the lag simply ruining raids/instances atm. Not to mention PvP :\

Bah lag was terrible again last night. We got the idea that the more mobs there were the worse the (skill)lag became. At the boss (lightning) it was at least playable though there will still lag spikes now and then which caused a wipe or 2 (people just being stuck while they had to run away with the chain-lightning on them). It's really frustrating and not a word from Turbine. Bad show!
