Have any of you played Ultima Online way back in the day? Do you remember spending a long time running around the open world trying to decide the most amazing spot to place your house? You would then proceed to place your house, decorate it and have all of your clan mates build near you, so anyone passing by would know who's awesome territory it was.
Why can't we have the homesteads as a large zone say the size of the shire, where we can PLACE our house anywhere we want.
Unfortunately I know this will never happen in LOTRO, but the housing needs a SERIOUS revamp.
Too much work for the developers and I'm sure there would be house trollers that would annoy people by putting their houses in really inconvenient spaces. And what about yard decorations, where would they fit or would you take the whole yard with you or be able to place them anywhere?
if i have to choose between this idea and new content i won't choose for this idea... It is nice, but in a way you can already do what you propose, on a much smaller scale... placing houses on game map pls never! (for reason, try playing anarchy online)
You're greedy . I'd already be happy if I could place the furniture inside my house whereever I want.
And I'm not sure being able to build a house whereever I want is such a clever idea in a massive game like this. People would find ways to abuse it in no time.
"HELP!!!!??" is not an appropriate thread title.
Only fools use apostrophes in a plural. That's when they're called fool's apostrophes.
Oh yes, I have played Ultima Online. But in my opinion it didn't look pretty when there were houses everywhere and most of the houses were so weirdly decorated that they looked just terrible.
I like having Homesteads, it's all neat and organized there. But what I don't like is how you are able to decorate those houses. Or, should I rather say, how you are not able to decorate them properly. I don't like those spots where you can put the furniture on, it would be much better (and leaving more room for imagination to work with) if there weren't ready spots at all, but you could put those furniture wherever in your house you wanted. Putting some sort of number and limit how many objects you can put into your house is needed though, but much more increased than what it's at the moment.

There are issues with housing, but being able to place them anywhere ala UO is not a good answer for this game.
IMO, the biggest issues with housing are:
1) The neighborhoods are far away from the towns with which they are associated. This makes them inconvenient for any kind of useful, town activity.
2) The houses themselves are spaced apart quite widely. Getting around a neighborhood takes a while, and you really aren't seeing all that much.
3) There's very little customization for any given house. You can't upgrade the house on a particular lot from standard to deluxe, for instance. There's very little difference to look at from neighborhood to neighborhood.
4) Housing right now is basically an extra bank that you can decorate to an extent. There should be some extra reason to get a house, and to get one in a particular location. For instance, there might be a hobbit neighborhood up on Bree Hill. Having your home there might give extra rep or experience, allow a higher rep, give a morale boost when in Breeland or when just within vicinity of any Hobbit settlement.
I think a housing system that looked a little more like this would give it a bit more interest and meaning.
Placing homes any where in a zone. No way. I've seen this kind of sprawl before. I do not want to see it again.
Turbine wants to create an unfinished instance with plots using the basic tech used today. That would be fine. Turbine needs to do the zoning, roads, and basic infrastructure to keep it from being a crammed together slum. Similar to what you see in many housing areas in real life.
Unless stated otherwise, all content in this post is My Personal Opinion.
I like the layout out of most of the housing areas. I really dislike the idea of being able to place your house anywhere or even in a designated location. I like having a yard..wish I could actually do something cool with it..but..I have a yard. The houses themselves are as stated above..glorified closets. Total shame. So much could be done. And If they'd get out of the more mobs, more loot, more raids mind set they could toss together some nice housing that would keep cash flowing and players happy. It's not magic..nor brain surgery.
I loved Ultima Online however houses were placed anywhere in a zone and as soon as you crossed a server line there was a pause as all the houses loaded up onto the computer. It happenned only rarely in UO but in a graphically better game like Lotro, the lag from crossing server lines would be worse. Better to have doorways in cities that you could go through to housing instances.
I personally like my house on its own island. Close to amenities and good to fish off whenever I like. Its a shame the house is on the small side but location, location.
As it is they do need to improve the housing system but not if it means ruining gameplay by allowing houses to be placed outside of cities.
