Thread: The Landroval Times

A few weeks ago a couple of posters were talking about creating a wiki or a website akin to the Laurelin Archives. After three weeks of playing with the formatting and design, it's finally ready for everyone to use.

Players can consolidate their in-game roleplaying life by creating Character and Kinship Profiles, writing Blogs and Stories about their character's adventures, set up in game meetings and events, as well as advertise their goods and services. It's everything that makes Landroval special all in one place and created by players for players.

Be aware that when you register, you will receive an email with a link to set up your password once approved. If you don't receive it within a day, check your spam filters or use the site contact form to let me know.

ETA I went ahead and created recurring events on the website, however, if it is an event you host/are in charge of and would like to rework the event entry, let me know and I will gladly render control over it to you.

Kind of unfair and incredibly one-sided if you're just going to talk about RP life in something that bears the name "Landroval", which includes A LOT MORE non-RP-related happenings/events etc.

I really think this is a good idea, but I suggest that you make this website for everyone, RPers and non-RPers alike.

It's not specifically targeted at RPers only... though it's content would probably interest RPers more.

Anyway, it's modeled off the Laurelin Archives apparently (the name included), the server of which is also filled with Non-Rper's, despite the tag. So I'd assume the complaint should be directed at them for naming it... though I don't think it's fair that they should be blamed either, myself.

It looks fantastic! Excellent job. To be honest i do not see it as being a major problem to post up non-rp events. looks great im going to go play with it now!

As to non-rpers, anyone can join. I just honestly didn't see the appeal a non-rper would have to a separate website considering the forum is active and still the best way for people to be made aware of events, kins, and trade opportunities.

All the website really does is provide an outlet for people to present their characters and stories much as the blog section here was intended to do. It also is intended to help spur in game rp with things such as the public notices section.

Not sure what a separate website could do for non-rpers that the forums don't already accomplish? If you have any suggestions or ideas, I'm more than open to hearing them and seeing how it would fare on the site. Feel free to PM me here, leave a comment, or use the contact form on the times website.

That goes for everyone. As it's a site made for the players to use and play with, if anyone has ideas they think could help the site, things they want to see on it, or additional links they think could help, definitely let me know.

When I saw Laurelin's RP project, I was jealous that we didn't have something similar. Thank you for taking it upon yourself to create something similar for our server. I can't wait to put it to use.

Hmm. The Landroval Times? When I first saw this thread i expected it to be am IC Newspaper. But this is nice too.

Well there are the news reports people can submit for the front page, and the public notices/services sections are a bit like the personal ads section but yeah....

Unfortunately I think it died.

I've added a few pictures from the 100th Ales and Tales, as well as new fields in the Character Profile section: Name pronunciation and Name meaning.

I also added a link under sections called "Latest Updates," which lists the latest contributions to the site.

Looks good, I like it! Looks like it should be pretty useful.

Just a minor quibble, the times on the events don't seem to have time zones. Might be kinda useful.

Otherwise, it's great! I'll probably be putting up some profiles of my own soon. :-)

Ahhh, you're right! I did forget to include timezone, how clumsy of me! Just changed it so that it should appear now. Thanks for letting me know!

Nice idea. I put in an application. My Kinship isn't much into RP, but we do immerse ourselves and take our play seriously while having fun. Looking forward to getting approved so I can see how to contribute.

I like the site and posted my character profile. It all looks great and I can't wait to see people start using the News Reports but the Public Notices section will probably be my favorite because it seems like a great way to start RP or find an event to attend with people who you may not otherwise come across.

Just want to say THANK YOU! to everyone who has signed up on the site. It's fantastic to see people using it and adding content.

For anyone who tried to access the site around 10pm and could not, my apologies. I had to put the site into maintenance mode while I corrected a problem (for some reason, the Getting Started page had disappeared; it's back now though).

I've also added a few more fields to some pages that I thought would be useful based on feedback. They are as follows:

Character Profile : name pronunciation field, name meaning field, personality field.
Account Profile : miscellaneous text field, link to your LotRO blog, web friendable, in game friendable.

If anyone has any thoughts, feedback, or wants me to add something, let me know and it shall be done if possible

This seems to me to have the best potential of any effort so far to be a really valuable website to the RP community. I plan to support it fully.

Would you be able to add a gallery function such as the Laurelin Archives has?

As to galleries, I thought about it, and it is very doable. I was just worried about bandwidth and webspace. I'll have to check out how much space I have allotted and then try to install user galleries

Just a heads up, the site will be down for a bit tonight as I update the software. I will edit this message once everything is back up.

Also, before I had to take the site down, I managed to set up user galleries, so that should be up when the site comes back.

And we're back!

Image galleries are up. Registered users can click "Image" under the Add Content section to begin uploading images. Once uploaded, the images will appear in the main gallery section, the user's gallery section, and the latest 3 images will show up in each character profile created by the user.

Just a quick note - I noticed on the site it has the information listed for the Exiles of the Riddermark OOC information. The meeting time and schedule for the event changed a bit since it was posted and should now read:

9:00 - Gather at the site

Each week we will meet at a new location, generally a camp, inn, or temporary shelter. This is the setting for the event. The first hour is BYORP around the campfires

10:00 - Call to Arms

A call to arms and for the defense of Rohan will be given each week by the designated host of the event. The song, "Lament for Eorl the Young" will be played as an official beginning of the event. Feel free to sing along. The lyrics are:
Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing? Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

10:30 - Tale of the Mark

A pre-written tale will be shared at each session. The tale can be a personal tale of experiences in Rohan and the current events there, a tale of the history of Rohan and its people, or a artistic composition of poetry or song.

11:00 - The Journey

During each session, the riders will mount up and ride to the next location. This journey across the landscape forms a solid part of the weekly RP, as it will all be mounted with stops to interact with the landscape (orc camps, rivers to ford, places to visit) Our Scouting and Skirmishing group will provide the path and the security along the way.

12:00 - Free RP

After the Journey, free RP will begin, where players can interact freely and make plans, argue tactics, or simply speak about their experiences on the road to the river Isen to aid thier homeland.

Great work on the site so far - I'm looking forward to utilizing it even more!

Ah, thanks for letting me know the details had changed! Updated the site to display the correct info. Also, since it starts at 9pm now instead, I hope to make it next week so I can write up a new news report. Been secretly hoping someone else would submit a news article though tbqh....

Also, just corrected a bug I hadn't noticed before when it comes to formatting issues (aligning, font colours, etc.) so now, things should display properly when you create new content.

Huzzah! Some news, created a twitter that the site feeds updates to automatically if anyone is interested in it. This way, people can better keep track of new content or site changes as opposed going through this thread. The twitter is @landrovaltimes

Site is back up. Bugs that led to broken links when trying to link to character profiles has been fixed.

Thank you! I'm happy you like it and that people are using it! I keep trying to make it to as many events as possible, though this week I've fallen behind as my mouse has died. Waiting on amazon to ship my replacement and until then, stuck on my netbook \=

Also, a quick notice to all, I've added a poll onto the main page of the site, asking whether or not the layout should be changed. Mostly just the colouring, but a few graphics as well is what I'm thinking, perhaps something a bit darker for the autumn.

The poll is open to all and closes in a week. Really want to see what you all think since I know I personally grow tired of layouts quite quickly and it may just be me wanting the change.

As always, if anyone has any suggestions for things they'd like me to add, new features, links, etc. definitely let me know!

The site is back up and has the new layout implemented! If anyone has problems with fonts or colours, let me know so I can fix things up.

The poll had the majority split between yes for the layout change, and the ambiguous 'do whatever' with only one person opting to keep things blue (sorry!).

As school has picked up again, I find I don't have as much time to attend all of the events going on.

Ahhh, try refreshing the page a bit if they're still in their party finery. They were dressed up for Frodo and Bilbo's birthday last week, though I've changed them back Sunday...
