    Unhappy Female Hobbit Names :(

How do you come up with a name for a new female hobbit that's vaguely lore-ful?

I've spent and hour and a half putting in names of flowers (English and Latin), gems and regular English girls names before giving up. Everything's taken.

Do people get overly annoyed here if you resort to non-English names? I just wanted to roll a new burglar and it's been an exercise in frustration

Maybe you've already tried this, but well.

i used this to make my hobbit on a server where RP is not enforced (although i wanted the name to be lore appropiate)

I'd guess the french name wouldn't be that lore breaking since french has latin roots.

I pore over ancient Cabbage Patch Kids birth certificates (the long form!) and harvest names from those.

Why does it have to be English?

Try somthing Frankish, or if she is of the Fallohides somthing in Old Norse would be loreful.

I feel ya! I don't RP but I try and come up with "normal" names. I just made a new Cpt a couple of months ago and it took me almost an hour to get a name for him. After 4 years of LOTRO it's getting pretty hard to find a name that seems normal and has not been taken already. Good luck.

    Re: Female Hobbit Names :(

I used a diminutive form of a latin plant name.

Bootsy "Bouteloua" it sounds more hobbity to have a shortened version too.

e.g. Lavendula - Lally, Venda, Dula, Ula, Enda etc.

    I hope that helps.

I suggest you just come up with a name that sounds right. Its not as if there is a *law* stating that all female hobbits must be named after flowers.

Unless that motion was passed by councilwoman Stinkweed.

Took a flower name, gave it a female, hobbitish ending.

Rose + ending from Estella = Rosalla. Rosella was taken, but I was content to change one letter.

Ooh, some cool suggestions thanks. I succumbed to buying enough TP for a couple more character slots in yesterdays sale (I'm a horrible altoholic) and this killed all the excitement of rolling a new toon.

I ended up with a Japanese-based name but it just feels wrong so I'll reroll tonight I think.

Human females are sometimes named after flowers and jewels, it doesn't mean it's the ONLY rule. Flowers and jewels is a suggestion. You could name it after ANYTHING the hobbits would consider pleasant.

    Re: Female Hobbit Names :(

I've had this same problem. I actually did the same thing, rolled a female hobbit burglar and beat my head against the naming wall for several agonizing minutes. It can be especially frustrating if there is a name you REALLY want and it is already taken.

As a last resort, if you really really like a name and must have it, try going one letter off or doubling up on a consonant. Replace a y with an i, or a c with a k or vice versa. if there's an m in the middle, go with two m's. A lot of times this does the trick.

My burglar ended up being named Aquillegia (latin name for columbines, with an extra l thrown in). I wasn't sure about it at first, but it has grown on me.

I'm not an altoholic... >.> really... Im not <.<

I used indigenous flower names, and changed letters around where necessary to give feminine endings. I love the compound names too.

Yes, a lot of Hobbits have Frankish names. My Minstrel's name is Dhuoda, which was the name of the wife of one of Charlemagne's comites, or "counts," and who wrote a book of advice for her son, who was also serving the Emperor. Googling on "Frankish women's names" will probably find you a list, or several.

    Re: Female Hobbit Names :(

I took a normal gem-name and added a letter, and voila, a nice hobbit name. There seems to be more flower names going around than gem names.

Sodalit + a = Sodalita (As I'm Danish, I took the Danish spelling of the gem which is lacking the e you find in English).

I'm sure you can do that with a bunch of flowers and gems and just add a letter or two to give it the right gender-ending and make it unique.

    Give this a try.

    http://www.irishdictionary.ie/home

I have a few female hobbits

    I went with

    Sapphire = Saifír
Rose = Fíon (Spelling got changed to Feon)
Orchid = Magairlín (Spelling adjusted to Magalin)
    Ruby = Rúlbín

I mean really, I know Gaelic isn't exactly Hobbitish, but you can play with the spelling.

    Re: Female Hobbit Names :(

For flower names, I think the 'extra letter' trick works well. So for my hobbit lass, who had a long existence on Neverwinter Nights, and who I found was not allowed her real name of Primrose, I have Primmrose (Laurelin) and Primrrose (Landroval). I think this just looks as if her parents got the spelling wrong!
Hobbit lads are easier in one way, harder in another: the tendency to use 'high-faluting' names leaves a lot of room to make up a name based purely in your own imagination, but it does feel better if you can come up with something that has a 'Frankish' or mediaeval look.

I heard the name Zillah both in a book and in a TV series (the tv series was set in England) and liked it. Zillah was taken so I used the variant Zilah for my Hobbit Burg. Later I found out that it's from the Hebrew for "shadow". Talk about perfect!

hraicenë adj. difficilement visible (hardly visible)

When I have created my burg, and for every times I have to come up with a new name, I always go there (http://www.ambar-eldaron.com/telecha...enya-fr-A4.pdf). That's my muse if that can help.

    Re: Female Hobbit Names :(

I really wanted the a hobbit lass from Willowbottom in the Marish named after lilies, but of course the name Lily was taken.
I then ask myself, what kind of common names would the local residents of Marish call lilies, what kind of lilies would grow in the Marish, what it might look like, etc.

Several names came to my mind, such as Swandew, Elf-Rod, Silverbloom, and Marshlily. It took me 1 minute to create my new character (marshlily, it's the first name i tried), and it certainly make more sense than using latin names of flowers and gems names because chances are, in middle earth, the same species of animal/plants/type of ores/gems would be called differently from culture to culture, or even from town to town.

So go pick your favorite flower/gem, and do a little bit of research on what their common name are, and with a little imagination, derive what their common name might be for the resident of (insert village name here) of (x)farthing, the Shire.
