To be absurdly honest, I do know that it can be bartered for for 2100 skirmish marks from any Curiosities vendor in any skirmish camp. However, I'm utter rubbish at skirmishes and haven't the patience to grind out marks in skirms 10-20 levels lower than my level so I don't fail. As for the direct method of venturing into Carn Dum? Yeah.... I mostly solo because my computer, for some reason, thinks that rendering other player characters is a reason to seize up and let me die.
