    Re: The Laurelin Art Thread

Hullo nice people of Laurelin I want to post something not by me but by one of the greatest poets that ever lived and I want to dedicate his words to my many friends from Norway tonight

"The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places.
But still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands, love is now
mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps, the greater."

    — J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings)

And just to stay on topic a little something I made earlier

A big hello and thanks to all those posters on this thread. *And a big wave to all those from the thread's previous incarnation.*

It would be great to try and get this one a sticky!

Well here is some of my input. They are, for now, focussed around our Kin, but in time I hope to do more generic artwork of places and events.

    http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/7...l1680x1050.jpg
Patrols along the routes between Imladris and Mithlond are a key part of what we do. Oftentimes this is done in secret, but a more open show of our presence is sometimes required.

This was an illustration of an assault on some goblin camps, details of which can be found here; http://laurelinarchives.org/node/5397

Echad Rond is the location where we train our scouts. More details of which (for those interested) can be found here; http://laurelinarchives.org/node/5681

I hope you enjoy the images but a big reminder to everyone to respect the rights of all the posters in this thread and seek permission before using any words or images elsewhere!
Wow these are great and so lotr-ish! Well done
Sam: “It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something.”
Frodo:“What are we holding on to, Sam?”
Sam: “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”

    — J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings)

    Truer words were never spoken.

Those sentiments, I believe, are part of the reason why so many of us hold the works of Tolkien dear in our hearts. Works of fantasy are a reflection of the world we live in. Tolkien seen much of the horror of war and knew what he was talking about. We hold many virtues within each of us but it is the ones we choose to act on that define us.

The wonder of fiction and art, in all forms, is that it allows us to explore and express ourselves. This community shares a common love for Tolkien and works of fantasy in general and it is always a delight to view any creative work. Some may feel they lack the skills or confidence to express themselves and post. That their stories, poems or artwork are inferior. But this would be a sad loss to the community as a whole should they not post, for each creative work is a seed that allows us all to grow together.

Skills and technique can be learned, all it takes is practice. What matters is the spark of imagination! That idea, that channelled expression of emotion through art is what counts!

So I ask any who have struggled, to look deep within themselves and discover what pulled them through their own times of peril, of darkness. And show us something fair that we may carry with us on our own journey and perhaps along the way, we can all make the world a little greater?

    PS
Oh and a big thank you to all of you who have commented on my own work! Some of whom I know are really creative! I can only hope you found something of interest in them.

My goodness Aearandir, there you go being inspirational with your words as well as your art! I totally agree with you, of course. Now I am encouraged to pick up pencil and get drawing again.....though posting may take a little more courage yet.

And please post more pictures Amory - I really love your style.

There really is a lot of talent on this thread and, dare I say, in the community at large. I look forward to being inspired by more

Please do!!! The more works that are posted in differing styles and levels of ability can only encourage others to eventually post their own expression.

Im loving Amory's style too. Reminds me a lot of the classic 70's LOTR art. Really nice use of colours! Taogan's work also has that natural watercolour look that fits in so well with Middle-Earth. The Frogmorton image is one I particularly like.

    Looking forward to seeing more!

That is the most important part Merilda. It is often said and believed that you must have talent to do any of those things. That is false. We all have the potential to do anything within us. It comes down to what we choose to nurture.

The skills to draw and paint are like any other, they require practice and time to develop. Frustration at not achieving on paper/canvas/screen what you have in your mind's eye is natural and is often what spurs you on or makes you give up. This is as true for painting as it is for trying to do a 20mile Marathon. Each step along the way improves your ability. It is your choice to go on or give up that makes the difference. Just like Frodo and Sam.

I was the same as you Marilda, I used to see fabulous pieces of art all over the internet.
Some people are visual artists, they create pictures that inspire the soul.

I can't, I have trouble drawing stick men. So a while back I wrote a poem about it.

This is for all of us who can't draw:

    Me, I'm not an artist

    Me, I'm not an artist,
    I can't paint in oils.
The last time I tried acrylics,
I broke out in spots and boils.
    Charcoal makes me wheezy,
    pencils cause a rash.
No wonder artists are so poor
    and cannot make much cash.

Now words for me are different,
I can twist and bend their form.
They can be cold with anguish,
    with humour they are warm.
    With them I can replicate
    the beauty in the flowers,
or how the seconds drag slowly past,
when I have to wait for hours.

    Me, I'm not an artist,
    I cannot paint a tree
but, with a few well chosen words,
you'll see the same as me.

Thank you kindly for the encouraging words, I do like doodling me...always holding a crayon and a piece of parchment in me hands as you never know what you may come across while adventuring in Middle-heart ...like that time I met some Elves just outside Woodhall which accidentally is the same place where master Frodo and his friends also met some lovely Elves

"Yes, it is Elves," said Frodo. "One can meet them sometime in the Woody End. They do not live in the Shire, but they wander into it in Spring and Autumn"

    *waves and smiles happily*

Some of you may know that yesterday (September 22) it was Master Bilbo and Master Frodo's birthday. In my own little hobbit way I do celebrate this very special day every year. Also, on September 21 it was the 74th Anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit that was first released on 21 September 1937. Two very special day for Middle-earth. I like to doodle me and with my brushes and crayons I travel Middle-earth to pay homage to Professor Tolkien
