Been at endgame for about 6 weeks now and still having a lot of fun, only just started moving from pvp into the flashpoints and raids.
The pvp can be very hit and miss. The warzones can still be very fun, I usually roll in a premade with guildies so we win more than we lose, but if you get stuck with 4 fresh 50s it can be very frustrating. Still, republic seems to be catching up to empire in terms of skill and gear so most warzones are fairly even now. The open world pvp is pretty much non-existant at the moment but Bioware seem to patch OPvP every week atm!
The PvE endgame is fairly entertaining so far. There are something like 9 flashpoints (4man instances) that have level 50 hardmodes attached to them. The few that I've done have been quite good, usually 4-6 bosses per instance and can take 30mins - 2 hours to complete (longer when u wipe a lot!). I'll be honest, there has been a lot of repetition in terms of design. Too much of it is walking through star wars corridors, fighting similar looking droids and men over and over. The bosses are usually quite cool but the spaces in between leave a lot to be desired. I felt the same in lotro tho, endless repetitions of dark and dingy GB walls :S
The raids are much better though. There are three modes: normal, hard and nightmare. There are also two group sizes: 8 or 16 man. So far I've only done a full clear of Eternity Vault on 8man normal. It was great! Extremely little trash to fight through, some interesting boss mechanics and very visually appealing! It managed to fit in a boss in the snow, some caves with loads of lava, a lush jungle plus some jedi ruins! Loved it! Plenty of bugs but all new content is bug ridden. The final boss, Soa, has two great phases where you have to jump from ledge to ledge in a downwards spiral as he slowly smashes the ones behind you, very reminiscent of older platform games. We've also done most bosses in the other raid, Karagga's Palace, but sadly I haven't got to see many of them yet.
For the casual and semi-hc player, TOR still has a lot to offer. Its not perfect, loot itemisation is just as bad as lotro, there is also more emphasis on gear and tiers of gear than lotro but there is still loads to do and see! My major complaint is that they keep bringing down the forums (hence me lurking here :P )

I got a little tired of my smuggler and went for Jedi Knight this time around. Got to level 12 and having fun. But man, everytime I see that little lock icon on the tool bar I start wishing LOTRO had one. I made a macro for it but still......

I kind of regretted my decision to buy this game. 60 bucks and 2 weeks later and I'm back playing lotro. It was a combination of horrible lag spikes, childish behavior, and completely stopped caring about the quests/storyline after hitting level 15. I also didn't like the atmosphere of the game. Even though lotro NPCs all look similar and are text-based storylines, I find them much more compelling than listening to another lieutenant tell me about how the local gang members are cutting off their cargo shipments. The game just makes it too apparent that you're on a rail ride and in turn makes your actions and immersion into the world seem insignificant.
I was driven to extreme bouts of yawning by level 30. Im putting SWTOR away for a year in the hope that the whole package gets sharpened up, the bugs ironed out, the quest lines get revamped and that most of the idiots have moved on to GW2.
I hate that. Those guys are worst than a bunch of locusts.

Last night I made it to the Black Sun area and at the taxi drop off point I encountered the worst lag I have had in a long time. It literally took me ten minutes to walk over to the 2 quest givers there. The only way I could move was to use WASD while tapping the keys and waiting a few seconds between each turn and step. It got better as I made it away from the taxi area and into the main hallways.
Today I was in the Justicar territory, and the lag was almost non existent. The only issue I had was getting stuck in combat mode but was taken out of it maybe 3 minutes after filing a help ticket. Very fast response time, I was impressed.
Made to level 15. My assistant, Kira is a hothead. "Eat my lightsaber, jerk!"
One thing that stuck out in my mind was seeing this one female character named "Dirty Harriet". I laughed a long time.

To those that have quit on the game, it seems like you all quit before the game really took off. My SI story was pretty slow until level 34 then I couldn't sleep because I had to play, It FELT like I always imagined what a sith does during her free time (Gaining power, obviously :P) and the way the cut scenes are presented makes it very enjoyable (Because they are actually cut scenes, just like in other BW games! )
IA story line has been riveting ever since I left Hutta, as your Companion says, about the Sith " look at them tremble in their boots at the sight of you. You're the freaking secret police". It's so cool!

I got a good chuckle out of that last part. Skill is not the root of the problem on the server I play on. It's the fact that the Sith outnumber the Republic badly. Period. Lol like the Sith players started with more skill than the republic players. In general PVP in TOR stinks. There's a huge galaxy where open world fights could happen but there are zero incentives and the world is so heavily instanced that you could simply miss many of the people you could be fighting since they are in a different instance.
At least a lot of people are clearing out of TOR now. Maybe they can scale back some of the instancing and let some of the open world PVP happen. Right now open world PVP consists seemingly of bored Sith level 50s roaming through the republic levelling areas and ganking. This would be great (on a PVP server anyway) if it lead to more fights but it doesn't. The gankers just move on to the place with the least resistance which never fosters good PVP.
So for now TOR still stays as a back-up game. Heck, if my brother and few RL friends didn't play I would be even more disappointed in it. Freinds definitely make that game more tolorable. Unless you are into the single player MMO thing then I guess it wouldn't be bad. Still, I am really disappointed in the PVP of that game. Warzones are fun but get old and many of us hate arenas and other hand-held types of PVP. Battlefield already has that stuff and they are way better at it.
Sorry to rant but PVP is the one thing that I wanted to be fun in that game and, so far, it isn't.

That would make me not want to play right there. If I wanted to play a twitch console game, I'd be playing one. But I guess EA has to please that crowd.

It sounds like dynamic environment to me, similar to the forges last boss with the rotating flames. I wouldn't call that twitch combat, more situational awareness.

while i do agree with that it must be noted that the bioware devs really seem to like jumpy platformers.
for a prime example just take note of all the precision jumping required in getting to most all of the datacrons.
methinks they all have bunny/frog dna.

PvP experience is pretty much entirely based on the individual's preferences.
If you're someone who likes instanced PvP (warzones), then you'll probably like it.
If you're someone who likes world PvP (like me), then SWTOR isn't the game for you. At least not now and possibly never will be.

World PVP is my thing. I have pretty much given up hope that TOR will have significant world PVP but since my brother plays and I am a geek I am sure I will play from time to time and keep tabs on the PVP there. Things change and there could always be a shift in philosophy. Still I am disappointed in the PVP servers. Just not much PVP and the gankings that should lead to all-out brawls seldom do. That's a shame because there are some potentially great places for big, epic battles in TOR.

I'm not so sure the potential is there. I just PvE and I lag a lot more than I ever do in LOTRO, especially the Black Sun taxi drop off area. I can only imagine a huge, epic pvp battle.
Maybe down the road the player load won't be so much and the wrinkles may be ironed out, but as of right now I just can't see it happenening.
But man, the fun factor is there, I'm gonna sub for another month. Some things make no sense, like armed organizations taking over neighborhoods in the Galactic capital(that's like a gang taking over part of present day New York and beating back the NYPD), but as long as you take it in good fun, it's a good game.
If I want serious lore I come here.

It's mainly an issue with the game not being able to handle large battles. Once significant numbers show up the fps is shot. It turns the fighting into a slideshow. I was able to look past every other issue I had, but that one I just couldn't get past. I know they're supposed to be working on it, but I don't know how optimistic I am about it. At least regarding a solution in the somewhat near future. I think I read the next step they're taking is to add very low graphics settings.
It's a shame really. In my opinion it's a very good game overall, but in the end it's just not meant for ow pvp right now.
I think the norm will be an SSD drive and a decent 200dollar videoboard
then you will have no problems with huge amounts of players on screnn fighting in swtor
but I know that most PvPlers and WoWlers are supposed to play on 800x600 resolutions
with 5 to 7 yeat old rigs ...
maybe the upcoming 'very-low-shader' option is for you
the thing is if you make a game that is such sophisticated in storytelling,
quests, development and expolring it usally isnt an pvp oriented game
cause it will attract more people interested in exploring and experiencing
a story and doing group quest to play together and not against ... like lotro
pvp is the biggest grind there is, endless repetition ...

well, turbine has been working on a similar issues themselves since launch day and have never really found a successful solution.
IMHO it comes down to the limitations of the engine they are using.
in TOR's case the engine is unproven and was no where near properly optimized at release.
some of their issues may be solved with the twekaing they are doing with each patch/update but in the long run they may run into the same issues as turbine has with their engine.
i have alsway felt that mmo that are not deisgned with pvp as the end-all be-all have this issue alot.
To all who wonder: TOR is huge. Really huge. Many people say they "dont see anyone else while they are there". Well its so big that it would take cosiderable number of people just in one zone to even feel like "people around". Smilar "problem" Vanguard had. I otoh like it, it feels like world. But you have to get of Coruscant, even Taris)
Instanced PvP is great fun most of the time (playing rep side, valor 65 BM Sage). Open PvP is very lackluster. Theres just hope left there will be improvement in that departement. Part of the problem is that 16vs16 is upper limit for number of players when it still feels playable, even on high end machines.
Class storylines are mostly pretty good, companions can be great fun (Guss Tuno: "I heal you with Jedi power!" never gets old ;P ) Genric quests are hit and miss. Theres some great storylines (like Czerka storyline on Tatooine) to myriad generic fed-ex "I whine, you do" quests.
Kicking monsters over ledges, even in raids, never gets old Raids are fun, nothing hardcore, gear is easy pvp or pve, not many requirements, BW really did good, T3 (or 1.3) (Rakata) is barely an upgrade from T2 3-4% difference.
There are too many servers (what were they thinking, cramming all preorders on x servers and then opening 3x servers on launch...waaaay to many waaaay to late, they should have opened more for preorders, and waaay fewer on launch).
Grouping on my server is easy, LFG always going on. As a guild we cleared both raids on hard mode, guild is still growing pretty much on daily basis.
Gear system will finally go to fully moddable, atm everyone in endgame look like a clone, but 1,2 will remedy that, already have cosmetic sets just waiting for mods Its like relic system for LIs, 3 (4) slots and put whatever stats/stat combinations in appropriate slot without needles leveling/decon/legacy uber grind.
And TBH, never looked back to LOTRO. I will probably come back for next expansion of LOTRO (lifer) for storyline, but everything else i find a tad better in TOR (xept UI but should get customizable UI in 1,2 )
Okay, so now that the free weekend (7 day trial offer) is here, and I have downloaded the game for free and will play it for free tonight and be able to give a proper evaluation of it on Monday, I am curious...

Tuckly, I noticed you're on Landroval in lotro. I suggest give The Ebon Hawk server a shot. Active rp community if thats your thing and alot of players for you to group with.
Kind of makes Update 6 look like a minor bug fix...
A lot of fixes and improvements is true along with a lot of new content. Truth is though I actually trust Bioware to come through. It is very nice for bugs to be fixed within two months vs 6 months if ever. The bugs I've found were trivial and non game breaking. If you're curious about a great game that will only get better in time there is a free 7 day trial. Head on over to Swtor and give it a shot.

I was playing around with 1.2 last night as it's now on their test server. The changes seem very nice.

Glad to hear it! I beta'd it, and although I enjoyed it, I didn't feel it was quite ready for release. The only way I would have bought it at that point was if there was a lifetime option. As it is, I'll do the 7day trial soon to check it out again, and probably buy after (unless I'm seriously disappointed)

This is similar to how I felt. I'm gratified(?) to see people here mentioning the game engine performance and optimization, because I was saying that in beta and people were shooting me down right and left--it was my problem. Having fun with LotRO, so not going to look at the free weekend, but keeping my long-range scope on the SWTOR price tag.

Doesn't bother me. It's not like LOTRO where I finally got around to taking the plunge on the lifetime account only to have F2P announced months later. That was an angry day.
Easy to learn. Fun to play. Graphics are cartoonish but tight. Combat gets a little jerky at times. Leveling takes a while. Itemization needs work.
B+
This game will be around for at least 3 years, if not 10. The fun factor is quite enough to keep people entertained. Don't look for anything besides WoW is space, but remember it IS Star Wars and that makes it worth a look and a second look and a third.
Download was slow, and i get busy a lot on other actiovities this last weekend, but still managed to get a few hours of free weekend playing time in SWTOR.
Videos were epic, the quest text speeches also were nice - before had seen such tactic only in the single player games. Gameplay was smooth, the starting area quests for two classes i tried - republic soldier and jedi consular - were different enough that no repetition seemed being here.
Well, of course, the cost of game means, that i will most probably stay with LotRO for a time being.

Thank you, Turbine, for listening and giving us an opt-out of FE! Good work!
I gave the weekend trial a whirl - Although I am sitting on a copy of the Collector's Edition that I was going to get around to installing one day (It was cheap, I was going to sell it on, but there are tens of thousands of CE's still available, so it looks like I'm out of luck on that score (Mind, I was going to use the money I got from it to pick up a regular copy of the game))...
... Anyways, in the time, I took two Republic characters (Trooper and Jedi Knight) a-ways through Coruscant, and ran a Sith Warrior through Korriban... (Doing this I sat in front of the computer for far longer than I normally would, even if I were paying monthly), so I'm presuming I've got a pretty good grasp of what the game is like. It was a fun experience, though I have a few fairly large grumbles about it - I will come across as fairly negative in this mini-review, though I did enjoy it:
Character Customisation seemed extremely limited, with not a great deal of scope to create anything uniquely yours, and the use of colour pre-sets as opposed to LotRO's sliding whajjamacallits seemed like a step backwards.
The voice-acting. For the Jedi Knight, a few times it seemed pretty clear the VA was putting the emphasis on the wrong words, so what should have come across as serious sounded sarcastic and vice-versa. For my other two characters, I caught quite a few repeated lines of basic dialogue, especially with the Trooper - I think in the missions in the prologue, I caught the same line repeated 4-5 times, which was far too often, still, I didn't noticed too many identical voices, so it was clear that enough actor's were hired (Though I did skip a fair chunk of the dialogue as I read the subtitles far, Far quicker than the lines were recited).
Graphically... I'm torn. The character models were far too cartoony for my liking, and the animation I found a lot more stilted than LotRO's, though the landscape was mostly impressive, but again, it occasionally crepped into cartoon territory. Cut scene-wise, in the very first natter my Knight had, he appeared more like a slack jawed ape rather than a staunch defender of the Republic. I know that they can't very well do facial animations for player characters, but it looked badly wrong, and severely out of place. Oh - And in about half my cut-scenes, the textures for at least one character didn't load, so I was left watching a sloid person-shaped statue playing a role...
Scope: Its pretty clear to me that the lions-share of effort went into the Jedi Knight (And presumably the other Jedi role), with a lot less love going to other classes. The JK was a fully fleshed out experience in the prologue, and certainly felt like you were progressing along. The Trooper on the other hand felt... Stilted. It seemed to stall a few times, and never really felt... Epic. The Sith Warrior path, I've no complaints, except that it was a lot shorter than the other two - The Republic classes, I left the first planet at (Or nearly at) level 12, the Sith, I was barely level 10, and it took a lot less time.
The JK & Trooper played sufficiently differently that they were clearly different classes. The Jedi Knight & Sith Warrior though were almost identical, with almost the same skills available to them (At least till level 10) just with different names. I found that ot be pretty dissapointing. I suppose it was done that way to balance the two, but still...
Combat was pretty fun - Actually it felt a whole lot like LotRO's, though mostly faster paced... No complaints about it.
Quest-wise, was pretty typical. Go here kill this. Go there, collect that. I did like the idea behind the bonus quests though - The magically appearing 'Whilst your out doing Quest 'y' kill 10 of 'x' to get a pile of bonus experience'. Nothing I did really stands out though...
Dialogue was typical Bioware - A nice/serious/suck-up answer, a sarcastic/bored answer, and a 'I'm scum' answer. Typical Bioware fare, and as normal, it seemed to have no real effect on anything other than your alignment. Mostly well written, but boringly predictable.
The introductory video's for both the game and the two factions were superb, though the main one seemed to be playing a little game of 'How many tracks off the films soundtrack can we throw in'.
One thing I really didn't like, was the almost complete lack of connections to Knights of the Old Republic 1&2. Other than a decendent of Bastila's hanging around, in what I played I saw almost nothing to connect the games together. I especially expected more from Korriban. I'd have loved to activate the Star Map, useless though it was, but I didn't even see it there. That and a completely different map, and no mention anywhere of Czerka was most disappointing. Another gripe was the pitiful number of alien species I encountered. In a universe made up of thosands of races, I only encountered a dozen or so, and a couple of those were a single member of the species. Also the poor choice of species to play as was dissapointing.
Overall, a fun game, with several fair-sized flaws, and a handful of pretty major ones, but a game with a lot of potential. This trial would have been enough to make me pick up a months sub to carry on at some point, but the fact that I have to buy the game - even though I now have a complete copy of it installed is a bit of a deal breaker. Personally, I think I'll hold off registering my copy till after a future 1.3 patch is out, at which point I'll probably start again.
Personal Rating: 74% A good game, with a great potential for improvement, but with several deep-seated flaws.
and no mention anywhere of Czerka was most disappointing.
yeah, one weekend isnt barely enough to expereience the
full potential of an mmo game
and I still think that the animations of lotro are nowhere
near or close to the most probably mocaped and
fluid movments of swtor

Minimum $70. Unless you wanted to just sit and look at the box and not play.
I paid $0. And was able to make the same detrmination most did without having to pay.
Are you including a sub into this number? 30 days are included in any of the purchases below - no further payment was necessary unless you wanted to play after that - note you still had to enter a payment method.
$60 for the box or digital download standard edition.
$80 for digital deluxe edition
$150 for the mega collector box
As I mentioned earlier, if you want to continue after the trial you will still have to purchase an edition as above. Of course just for trying the trial was for free - which is the point of a trial

That's what they are charging TODAY. The pre-launch was $70, and then you paid a sub once it went live. I kid you not. I sincerely hope they're including a month free in that considering they offered me $50 for the digital download by itself.
My point is...
People jumped all up and down to get a peak early on, when as I said, all they had to do was wait for a free weekend. People jumped all up and down saying there would be no free weekend because it was going to change the MMO landscape and $70 was a bargain to get in on the ground floor.
So, many coughed up the ransom to try out a game they'd never seen. Some quit after a month. I'm not saying that I get to play the game for free forever. I'm saying I got to play for free and not pay the ransom that was touted as such a 'bargain' before release.
And I've stated, it's definitely a fun game! But not for $50 plus sub cost. I still have 5 days left free, but unless I see something completely different after level 10 or so, I'll be back on the sidelines playing LOTRO, Skyrim, X3 and waiting for GW2. At least with GW2, I'm just buying the title. I'll have plenty of time to play before the first pay expansion goes up.
Who knows. Maybe TOR drops its price this summer. That $15.00 sub is what gets me. I'll go back to EVE if I want to pay $15/mo to play a space game.

(...)
I think I know where you are coming from, the regular version was not available for download iirc, you still had the option to pre-order the regular box from different places. Apparently there where some time-issues with some retailers there. But not from them directly, that is correct.
(Edit: I even had a $5 discount - think that was from the EA store)
The free month came with it, no worries, you did not pay a sub when it went live. If you were lucky you got some extra days as well.
Since I'm a sucker for fluff I was fine with that (the digital deluxe edition), although you can definitely argue the value you received for (an extra) $20.
As for the rest I totally agree with you of course. For me it was the right decision as I was pretty sure I would like it. In general I am in the same boat though, wait until it's out and a few months after have a look.
