I was having a problem running LOTRO on Windows 7, the dreaded .net Framework 1.1 error. Well I got the framework to install great and the game runs fine BUT, since I went from XP to Windows 7 without reinstalling the game (because the game is on a completely different drive than my OS) should I reinstall the basic game then copy my whole Turbine folder over that so Windows has all the appropriate registry entries etc...
Also, how does the game kow where to find the UserPreferences.ini file since the userr directory structure has so radically changed from XP to Windows 7? Is there anyway to change information in the files in the Turbine folder or something?
When I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, I merely copied the Lord of the Rings Online folder in the My Documents as backup and after the new OS was up, pasted it right back there....and after installing the .NET framework, the game is running fine and as it used to.....I dint need to change anything else.....
Ok, well my game is running fine too now and I don't want to fix something that ain't broke but it concerns me that there are no actual registry entries for the game. Would reinstalling it as I said fix this? Also how does the game know where to find the UserPreferences.ini file? I copied thaat whole Lord of the Rings Online folder contents from where it used to be to the game folder hoping it wpuld find it there.
Not sure what to do. Sorry I forgot to post as my main character again.
Win7 handles the 'where' of the Lord of the Rings folder. There are shortcut type objects in place that will route any program looking for the old structure into the new structure. No worries there. You should have a folder called "The Lord of the Rings Online" in your Documents folder.
Old path would be something like: C:\Documents and Settings\SomeGuy\My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online
New path would be something like: C:\Users\SomeGuy\Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online
You wil still have LOTRO stuff in your registry if you did an upgrade from XP to Win7. Most of the important stuff that's in the registry makes it through the upgrade process. Bottom line is if the game is running fine, don't touch the registry and don't bother with a reinstall.

No, I did a clean install of Windows 7 so there would not be any residual registry entries. I guess I will leave well enough alone. If I have an afternoon to blow maybe I will reinstall just to ease my anxiety... heh.
After installing .NET 1.1 I ran TurbineRegisterGDF.exe as ai was told to by the same guy who gave me the instructions on installing 1.1 in the first place. I guess that registers the game with the os or something.

We shall see.
Thanks for the advice.

Ah, I see. Yes TurbineRegisterGDF.exe does exactly what you think it does.
