    Tab Targeting & Critters

Is there any way to make tab-targeting ignore critter mobs (deer, coney, etc)?

I have put quick shots into more deer while grinding deeds for the sole purpose of removing them as a tab-target.

Also its really frustrating when being attacked by multiple mobs to tab to what should be the next closest mob and instead target a shrew 20 meters away.

    Thanks!

Well, Elf characters can't attack the little deer and fluffy little bunnies, because they are vegetarians, which is reflected by them being horribly underweight... In other words, Elves can not target with the tab key, any of the little friendly animals.

    Um, No,

Aside from the Disney-fication of Tolkien's elvish race, Elvish characters certainly CAN Tab-target woodland critters...

We just can't shoot the darn things when they get in the way.... which I find doubly frustrating.

Um... little woodland creatures like coneys & shrews stopped showing up on my Tab-target once they turn gray-named (too low level). However, other mobs and aggressive creatures like bears, boars, hogs, orcs, etc. still come up on my Tab even though they are gray.

I'm still new to lotro, so, is there a combat setting that we are missing?

You know, I honestly don't remember if those things still turn up in my tab sequence anymore or not... I mostly tuned it out after it had been going on awhile.....

Deer & elk do, but that's, to be expected...i remember almost getting taken out by a deer in the Trollshaws once, aggroing it accidentally while fighting a troll... The troll got me down to about 200, dropped, and all of a sudden, I'm dazed by a ticked off level 30 deer, lol.

They shouldnt get in your tab sequence unless they really are the next furthest thing out. If you're trying to target the absolute closest enemy, rather than cycle target outwards, hit Esc then Tab. If you're trying to cycle through enemies, then just hit Tab again. I dont see how they could get in the way so obnoxiously that they interfere with your combat targeting...

Maybe you're doing it wrong then? Because this ???? happens to me ALL the time. Example, in a fellowship with a friend, fighting two mobs, another mob saunters over and decides to join the fun, then a 4th mob spawns behind me to add to the excitement. Being an awesome loremaster, I'm playing the stun and root game as well as healing and repowering and stunblocking my partner who is tanking. I tab to stun one of the mobs and end up stunning a squirrel thus leaving me with a cool down and a mob who wakes up and starts bashing us again. NOT COOL. Sometimes I just use an AOE spell to kill whatever critter is in range to prevent ???? like this from happening.

Furthermore, I agree with the 'targeting something 20m away' while in combat. When in combat you should only be able to tab target what is aggroing you, and not something 20m away that is not part of your current battle. I'm tired of fighting two mobs and then accidentally adding a third to the mix because my tab targeting decided that something 20m away was really the target I wanted to select and not one of the two that are sitting right in front of me.

    Re: Tab Targeting & Critters

The targeting doesnt decide anything, it does what you tell it to which is "find the next furthest valid target outward from my current target"

I do have a problem with this at times, usually its when I'm fighting a mob with a pet. I attack the master, but the pet comes in ever-so-slightly closer, so if I try to tab to the pet, it cycles outwards instead of the way I want. But you cant expect the software to be psychic...

Like I said, I got in the habit of first hitting Esc to clear my target while tab-targeting in combat, to make sure I always start cycling outwards from myself, not from a monster halfway back in the pack. Not that I'd be against a checkbox for "Do not target trivial creatures while in combat", just saying there's a way to work around it for the present.

I'm wildly skeptical of any claims that you don't tab-target Critters, or stop tab-targeting them "once they've turned grey." They're zero level targets, they are always grey... and like the OP, they show up on my tab-target list, I'm sure they show up on yours too.

I would love the option to ignore critters. The only time I ever deliberately attacked a critter, was when I was figuring out how to use thrown weapons (not javelin).

    Which is to say:

They're actually L1, so they show up colored until you hit L6 or 7 or whatever

I actually find it kind of amusing to shoot them, because then when it says 'your mighty blow has killed [critter's name],' I always hear a sarcastic undertone...maybe it's just me.

But the elf thing might be accurate, as far as the game. My Elf Guardian can't kill them, but my Human Champ can.

Apparently for elves: killing woodland creatures, no. Kicking shrews? Yes.
