I can run the game for hours on end with DX9. DX10 and 11 crashes the client.
Using a GTX570 with the newest driver.
Q9550, 8 Gig RAM.
This thing should be able to run the client at max with DX11. My wife is using my old GTX260 with DX10 and she is fine. She plays all night with no crash.
I've ran DX11 test/benchmarks (Heaven) and all runs well. Dragon Age 2 (DX11) works great with the new driver.
This is so depressing. The game looks nice with DX11, it looks really flat with DX9. I really want to run this with DX11. I can't find much help through searching. Either everyone gives up on DX11 or they just don't respond with the fixes they implement. My card is factory overclocked so I have thought about reducing the clock. I did read about slowing the game down. Tried that, crashed in about 1 minute.
The game will minimize and when I try to maximize, it just shows a small black bar in the upper left of the screen and my cursor changes to that of the game. This is followed by the client crashing.
This is what's left in the event log -

Not really sure what to do here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
32- or 64-bit? DX10 and DX11 evidently both have some kind of memory issue under 32-bit OSes. I play under 32-bit Windows 7, and I was having black screen problems on zone transitions until I swapped LOTRO down to DX9.

Windows 7 x64, otherwise I wouldn't be able to address all that RAM.
I have downclocked my GTX570 to stock speeds. I have set the game speed set to high (it was on very high)
I'm now running with DX10 and it's been up for around 3 hours or so with no crash (yet)
Tomorrow I'll give DX11 a shot with these settings. I know that the difference isn't major between the different DXs, but I do enjoy the eye candy. It seems like DX10 and 11 just give the whole thing a bit more atmosphere. The game is nice enough looking, but I really do like the extra lighting.
I actually posted a week ago about basically this exact same problem. Something changed in the April 11th update that screwed up DX11. I had been running DX11 for months on a brand new machine on Ultra High without a single problem then all of the sudden after the April 11th patch I was getting video glitches and the game would stop responding and eventually drop to the desktop and give the warning that the Lotro Client had stopped responding. In one day over the weekend of the 16th and 17th I had a total of 20 crashes, I tried everything from updating drivers to reinstalling Lotro but no luck. I eventually had to drop back to DX9 and I havent had a crash since.
Tried running with DX11 last night. I played for about 6 hours with no crash!
So far the only 2 things I have done were to downclock the GTX570 to stock. It's an EVGA factory overclocked model.
In the LOTRO client settings, I had changed the game speed to high. But today when I looked at the settings, the speed was set back up to very high. I assumed it was changed when I selected DX11 last night before playing. So it looks like downclocking the card has helped immensely. I won't get much time to play tonight. I have one of my final exams in the morning
@Lonewolf2nv -
I read about the update causing graphical issues. Hopefully they can get another update out soon to remedy the problem. Is your graphics card overclocked? What is your game speed set at? (under trouble shooting in the main window showing all your chars) Maybe you could play with those settings.

I have the game crashes without any bugs, just hover and fly on your desktop.
Are there any news on that topic, or have i missed sth.?
Had some crashes with DX11 enabled and all maxed to ultra settings lately, but after the recent update i'm getting crashes to desktop (ctd), black screens etc. minute-by-minute.
Hmm. i have now tried allmost all Nvidia drivers from 265up for my GTX 570, set gfx-card back to reference-design specs, even installed the full European client (for German players) once again - and i'm still facing those game crashes .
Win 7 always calls D3D11GraphicsCore.dll for being the evil ... i really don't know what else to do. I switched back - temporarily - towards DX9 and no crashes, but hey folks DX11 would be way better indeed. Any help or solutions around? Hints, tips?
Just forgot to include the error message with DirectX 11:
Yeah i'm getting similar issues, don't have a crash log on hand atm, (i'll add later next time i get one), but since the last update i've been seeing far more crashes. 99% of which happen when a loading screen happens due to going through a door, or using a fast/swift travel options. very rarely, (llike one in 30 or so crashes), happens because of somthing else trying to load. About one in 50 of those is a sub zone transition. The rest are characterised by not all textures loading correctly after a loading screen and only the picture from the vital's bars loading. It tends to happen when i try to interact with an NPC, their menu dosen't pop up and after a few seconds the game locks and i get a crash.
I've been having this problem (or something similar) as well. Most of the time the game runs fine just like it did before the recent updates, but sometimes it's extremely laggy and every couple of days I get the "lotroclient stopped working" crash. Honestly at least three recent posts in this forum look applicable - this, the "Game play getting increasingly rough" thread, and the "Lotro client has stopped working" thread. And each has a completely different suggestion in the responses - drop to dx9, upgrade RAM, check cooling. None of which make much sense - the game ran flawlessly for me from September to May. (I've checked my cpu and gpu temps, both are normal).
How do you guys get those error logs like Blackbears and Tarho posted above? In the mean time I guess I'll see how the game looks in dx9 and see if that helps...
I also have them same crashes, but not only when I use DX11, also when using DX10 I have some random crashes, but not that many when compared to DX11. I have two Nvidia 580GTX cards also tried differend drivers and tried other "sollutions" posted here and there on the internet, but none of them solved my problem. And I just don't want to play the game in DX9, yeah I know I am stuborn but hey, I did not spent all my money on a high end pc to play this game in DX9. I really hope this will get some attention at both Turbine and Nvidia, maybe both companíes can contact each other and work something out to solve these problems.
I run two computers, a laptop with GeForce GT130M (laptop graphics basically) and a desktop PC with a GeForce GTX460. Both run windows 7 32 bit.
What's interesting to me, is that I get the problem on the main computer with my advanced GTX460, but the laptop performs fine.
Another interesting thing I've noticed is that the main computer is usually ok in outdoor environments (but the graphics freeze up has happened, up in Forochel where it got me killed), but if I enter or log into the Esteldin craft hall, the graphics will lock up within minutes pretty much guaranteed. It'll start slowly, with less than 1 second hitches/freezes in the visuals and this will swiftly build up to 1 second, 2 second long freezes before the whole thing just gives up altogether.
My theory at the moment is that it has something to do with the dynamic light that flickers up and down in brightness in that little room in Esteldin and whilst other dynamic lights might do the same, the speed with which the lock up occurs is higher in the craft room because of how much the light is flickering up/down in intensity.
Also worth mentioning the freeze happens on the main computer regardless of whether DX is running in 9, 10 or 11 mode, whilst on the laptop it's running quite happily at 10.
Really thx guys to get the discussion going on with the CTD / Blackscreen issue.
Well, i have to say that i was almost shocked with the description of Darth_Carl -> that reads almost exactly as my crahses ocurring currently. Fast loading screens, going through a door, fast/swift travel options etc. <- and there's a good chance that my LotRO client stops working.
@J_Howell: If an error occurs, my win 7 (64 bit) pops up an error message and i am able to simply strg+copy and strg+paste the error.
@megaboy: Hmm to be very honest, we currently (really) only get 'such' (frequent) CTDs and game crashes with LotRO - sadly. With all other games we checked the Rig, like WoW, Aion, Rift, BBC2, Crysis etc, etc. the Rig with the Geforce GTX 570 works like a charm. No (real) issues after all.
I can also second what Valazor wrote. With DX10 less game crahses, with DX9 running almost stable.
We checked what Larington wrote and our MSI GT640 notebook with Intel Core i7 720QM and Nvidia GeForce GTS 250M works very stable with DX10 and driver 267.76.
It is very, very strange. I have played now for - let's say 1,5 hours without crash. Now soon 4 crashes. Temperatures all ok .
Currently with the desktop Nvidia Geforce GTX 570 we run driver 266.58
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: We were not able to vaildate the below phenomenon :/ - Game 'seemed' to run 'more stable', but later on game crashed intermittently again.
We even nullified the .jpg in the folder and left the .bik Video file untouched. But the 'behaviour' remains the same - intermittent, sporadic CTDs and Blackscreens. Hmm - no clue at moment, going to switch to DX9 for the rest of the evening .
(Not working...
Well - just out of curiosity i renamed the directory C:\The Lord of the Rings Online\raw\de\logo to The Lord of the Rings Online\raw\de\logo_
There are the 'seasonal' and special deal pictures in jpg-format and the turbine_logo_de.bik
And? I had no crash since then o_O - maybe the loaded pictures are getting in conflict with driver'n stuff...)

Interesting, I was using driver version 275.33 and after reading that response I hunted down* a win7 32 bit copy of the drivers and installed to the desktop, problem appears to have gone away. With 275 the instant I logged into the Esteldin craft hall the stuttering would start to kick in. It isn't with 266.58.
Thanks for the assist, much appreciated.
*And by hunted down, I mean going to the dropdown menu for download drivers, selecting the "beta and archived drivers" sub-option - searching by other methods kept bring up notebook/laptop or 64bit driver versions that will refuse to install.
EDIT: Correction, it did crash eventually, whilst I was smithing in Thorins Gate., but this time it took a lot longer before the freeze took hold. This time it was without warning, no gradual buildup towards the freeze.

and again this is what was happening with the 8800's, nvidia not optimizing their drivers for THIS game.
it too them abit but they(nvidia) finally got around to it.

Ah i see, megaboy. But hey, i've posted also in the Nvidia Forum and written to the supp there. 'There', many ppl say, 'hey, it is on Turbine's side, it is their game engine and they have to assure proper DX10 and DX11 path'n stuff'.
Well to be honest - i, on customer's /player's side, don't really care about WHO is 'responsible' for the crashes, CTD, BSOD and so on after all. Hell, i am no game developer, it is not my game/graphics engine. All i am able to do, is to keep my drivers'n stuff up-to-date and then hope that Turbine will tell us, what's up with those DX10 and DX11 crashes and how to solve that problem?!
If it might be a problem with Nvidia drivers, specifically crashing with LotRO, then why Turbine is not WITH Nvidia to solve our problem? Maybe they are already in close talks with Nvidia, we don't know. As far as other games go: many actual games had or still have issues with e.g. DirectX 11. But it is communicated with the players ... is / was there anything announced by Turbine? Did i miss anything?
Btw.: :/ With DX9 i have played now over 1,5 hours without a crash. As soon as i switch to DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 LotRO will crash like described above ^^. Very sad ...

nvidia said the same thing about the 8800s
then they got together with turbine and eventually( it took along time for watever reason) things got fixed.
also turbine has a list of known issues with dx10/11 and turbine says they are working on it.
i changed the "Maximum Frame Rate" slider in Options > Troubleshoot to 60 fps and the "Game Engine Speed" to "High" instead of "Very High", just in order to see, if that would change the sporadic CTDs. And till now it works for me.
Client not crashed already for hours now, and is still running in the background whilst writing here.
EDIT: After a couple of hours more, i had again 2 of those black screens, so i switched back to DX9 again

having same problems. have a gtx 460 and a new gtx 570......both crashes within 10 mins into the game when dx10 or dx11 is set. never crash with dx9.
i have tried all nvidia drivers all the way from 2.60.xx to the latest 1. tried a clean win 7 32 bit install......everything crashes as long as its outside of dx9.
Has Turbine made any official statements on whether or not there is a fix being worked on? I'm experiencing the issue on a 6870, so it's not nVidia specific. Or has anyone in the community come up with a fix? I can't find anything.
Anyone have any further updates to this. I'm still having this issue with my EVGA GTX 560 Ti. I've tried all sorts of system testing, disabled features and disabled background programs. Nothing has solved the problem....dx9 is good, dx10 and 11 result in a crash.
same here using a Radeon 6870 latest catalyst driver. the clinet seams to crash. it loves to crash after some "loading" teleport screen...
Additional to that the loading times when the game is running in DX11 or DX10 are horrible . its so bad that the company is whiped AND left the sirmish becouse my ministrel keeps beeing in the loading screen.

Re: DX11 causing crashes
I have the Sapphire Radeon dual fan 6950 2GB and am using DX11.
Worked fine for me on XMas day but trying to play it today it won't even load the game, just gives me lotro client has stopped working error.
Any suggestions? I have the full retail Collector's Edition for Mines of Moria sitting on my shelf, was a subscriber, should be Premium but now it says 'non-VIP'.
Should I re-install The Lord of the Rings Online via the retail discs and then let it update the games files?

Wanting full retail instead of digital download for Siege of Mirkwood expansion.
This is awful, I have the same issue described in the original post. I'm running with an AMD Radeon HD 6970. It's been over a year since this problem was brought up and yet no fix has come, come on turbine, fix your game.
I've been crashing to desktop lately too. since about the 18th(before the most recent patch)
I've reinstalled, tried everything. worked with tech support but they stopped responding.
I use an nvidia 560gtx.
I've also gone in and reinstalled a much earlier driver to see if the new driver messed up...nada.
some people were having CTD from the nvvsvc.exe from nvidia, the nvidia firewall, so I disabled that...didn't help.
renamed folders, didn't help.
do you think changing the frame rate or game speed will help?
I'm not even using dx11, I still ctd in dx9
I did 3 things, disable Tripple Buffering, using AA x4 instead of x8 and made the sound use software instead of hardware (should be software for Win7/8), one of those 3 made my client run stable with Dx11.
