my weaponsmith can't mine any ore

I can't seem to mine any ore. I am apprentice weaponsmith and I have done the intro quest and I have my pickaxe but even on a tin or copper node I get the "You lack the proper training" message. I also don't have a track ore skill, I assume there is such a thing for prospectors?

    What am I missing?

just being a weaponsmith doesn't mean you can mine ore, what did you choose for a profession, you need prospecting to mine. If you choose the scholar set then you get weaponsmith but no prospecting. you will need to trade for it or buy it in the ah.

^ This. If you chose Armsman as profession you would get a Track Mines; if you chose Scholar you would get a Track Artifacts skill. Check your skills list; if you've got Track Artifacts you chose Scholar, if you have Track Mines then it's prob. a bug.

You want me to create wood?!?

It's not the pickaxe you have to equip, but the prospector's tools. Pickaxe is for woodworkers I think

True, I did choose Scholar and I am currently working that trade. I thought I could do both since I have weaponsmith and scholar but I guess I would have to switch professions to Weaponsmith to get the track skill for it. No problem, I'll concentrate on scholar for now.

    Thanks for the help!

You need to read up on basic crafting information, try this post: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.p...aft-the-basics

It explains that all vocations but Explorer and Woodsman are made up of a Primary production skill, a secondary Gathering skill that supports the primary production skill, and a Tertiary production skill that you do not have a gathering skill to support and must therefore collect and process mats thru an alt or the AH.

The Tertiary craft for explorer and Woodsman is a second gathering skill that can be used to support an alts needs.

I don't think you quite understand.

Crafting in the game is done through a vocation. Each vocation has three crafts, but you don't get to choose exactly which crafts you have. The crafts for each vocation are fixed. You cannot drop one craft and pick up a different craft as a replacement, you change the vocation, and that affects all three crafts you have.

To mine ore you MUST have the "prospector" craft. No other craft can mine ore in the landscape, only prospector can mine ore. You said you are a scholar, that means you chose the Historian vocation (only historian vocation has the scholar craft) and historian does NOT have prospector. You cannot mine any ore at all if you are a Historian.

    Here are all the crafts:
    Cook, makes cooked food.
Farmer, farms cooking ingredients and clothing dye ingredients.
Forester, collects wood from the landscape, makes leather from animal hides.
    Jeweller, polishes gems, makes jewelry.
Metalworker, makes heavy armor from metal, makes shields, makes crafting tools.
Prospector, collects metal from the landscape, processes the metal ore into ingots.
Scholar, collects old lore fragments, makes scrolls, potions and clothing dyes.
Tailor, makes light and medium armor from leather, makes captain banners.
    Weaponsmith, makes metal weapons.
Woodworker, makes wood weapons and minstrel instruments.

    Here are the vocations.
    Armsman, prospector, weaponsmith, woodworker.
    Armorer, prospector, metalsmith, tailor.
    Explorer, prospector, forester, tailor.
    Historian, farmer, scholar, weaponsmith.
    Tinker, prospector, jeweller, cook.
    Woodsman, forester, farmer, woodworker.
    Yeoman, farmer, cook, tailor.

You cannot mine metal as a Historian, end of story. You can buy metal that other players have mined and posted on the auction house (you must buy the processed metal ingots, Historians cannot do anything with unprocessed ore).

You can change your vocation to one that can mine metal and make weapons, Armsman is the only vocation that has prospector and weaponsmith crafts together. You will lose ALL your scholar abilities if you do this. Your crafting xp as a scholar will be lost, you will never get that crafting xp back.

You can create another character and choose a vocation that has prospector for the second character, then collect metal and make it into ingots so your first character can make weapons. You will need to level the second character up just to stay alive in the different zones where different types of metal are found. I suggest you choose the Tinker vocation if you decide to try this.

With two characters, one as Historian and the other as Tinker, you can grow cooking ingredients and cook them into useable food. You can mine metal ore to make weapons and jewelry. You can make potions and scrolls. You can make clothing dyes (some colors sell quite well with other players).
Therina - Hobbit Guard Rongo - Hobbit Warden
Frood - Man Minstrel Garmun - Man Captain
Zorosi - Dwarf Champ Froodaroon - Elf Hunter
    Southern Defenders - Elendilmir

I got it, really. Thanks for taking it from the beginning though. I'll continue Historian and gather ore as I can find it in the AH or off players I guess.

    Thanks for the responses everyone!
