    Why use the metalsmith guild?

Im a 28 captain and just became an expert metalsmith and came to the guild hall. When I create a crest it gives great XP, but has a cooldown of 3 days. What actual advantages are there to gainining reputation for them?

Gaining rep with your guild will let you purchase recipes that produce the crit version of single use recipes (not all single use ones, but a fair amount of them). The higher tiers require more rep. Also, once you are kindred you will be able to get recipes for lvl 60 and 65 crafted Legendary Items (both 2nd and 3rd age, plus 1st age 65s). The same goes for the other guilds also.

Re: Why use the metalsmith guild?

So it will let me purchase the critial version of other recipes?

And does using Superior forges give me any bonuses?

    Yes.

Superior Forges give one bonus - the ability to make Artisan and above recipes. Generally speaking, you can't make those recipes on any other forge than Superior.

Re: Why use the metalsmith guild?

Superior Forges do not increase your chance of critting when you make an item. When you start working on the fourth, fifth and sixth tiers of metalsmith, you must use a superior forge, you cannot make the items from those tiers on a normal forge. That's the only difference between a normal forge and a superior forge, superior forges must be used to make tier 4, 5 and 6 metalsmith items.

What use is the Metalsmith guild? The game has certain special recipies called "one-shot" recipies. You pick up the recipie as loot, you learn it and when you make that item, the recipie is erased from your character. To make the same item again you have to buy or find another copy of that recipie somewhere. Plus, these one-shot recipies use special critting items that are rare (it's a special type of scroll made by scholars but they need a similar one-shot recipie to make the critting scroll). On top of that, both the metalsmith one-shot recipies and the critting scroll recipies use rare ingredients (gem shards). You cannot use brimstone to crit these special recipies. All crafts have their own versions of the one-shot recipies (except Cooks). These recipies can fail to crit.

The Metalsmith guild gives you access to special versions of these one-shot recipies that do not need a critting scroll AND the guild recipie is guarranteed to crit every time you make it. In exchange for giving you a guarranteed crit on the recipie, the recipie needs one more item compared to the non-guild one-shot recipie. The guild recipie needs a reputation token, the ones you've been making and handing in for guild reputation. From tier 4 and higher you will need the Large guild tokens for these recipies. Those tokens have a 1 week cooldown. You will need to plan ahead and save up large tokens for 6 weeks (7 weeks if you make the matching shield as well) to make one full set of armour from these recipies.

There are guild recipies for making componants as well. For normal recipies if you crit when making a componant, you get 2 extra componants. With the guild recipies, you get 5 componants each time but only use materials needed for 1 componant. This can be very handy if you are low on materials. These componant recipies also use reputation tokens that you make as well.

The third benefit of the guilds is crafted legendary items. If you don't understand what guilds offer then it's obvious you don't know about legendary items yet (you can't start using them until you are at least level 45). The metalsmith guild has recipies for legendary captain emblems and legendary guardian belts. You must reach Supreme level crafting and have Kindred reputation in the metalsmith guild to make these legendary items. You can also make legendary relics which buff legendary items, but the requirements are the same as maing the legendary items themselves. Other guilds make other legendary items, except Cooks guild. Cooks guild can make relics but cannot make any legendary items that the relics are used on.

Correction. The guild recipe has no critical result, only a normal result. The normal result of the guild recipe gives you the equivalent of what a critical result with the one-shot recipe does. But it is still just a normal result (which is why you can't name it).

While it's probably easier for people to think of it as a guaranteed crit, this is not the case. It's really that the guild has access to special techniques that allow a better result as the normal outcome of the process. Also, unlike the one-shot recipes, the guild's improved recipe is permanent.

Tier 3 and 4 use Medium rep items for making armor (3 day cool down). Tier 5 and 6 use the Large rep items for making armor (7 day cool down).
