It just doesn't make sense. I uninstalled LOTRO, downloaded the new updater, downloaded fresh high-res client files, installed, updated.
First, no go. I got the same "decrypt" issue common here. I had to delete the highres._aux_1 file, then restarted. It updated properly client properly this time. But then on restarting, I was able to login, but I get the same issue. At the point when normally the client blanks, assumes full-screen mode, I get a system pop-up, saying something about the theme being changed, and then the entire client seems to crash. I never see anything of the client after the login at that point.
What is more, the client changed my Windows Theme. Not that I give a darn about Aero, but it was changed to "Windows Basic" instead. Now I'm totally confused.

On Edit, the system pop-up says the color scheme is changed to Windows Basic.
Please forgive me, but the pando mediacrapster download tool is... pure ####. I've never had such problems with any other download tool, and I've been using the Blizzard one, eMule, bittorrent and others. When trying to download the high resolution texture patch, it's simply stuck on 0kbps right at the start.
When will you ditch that ###### partner and get a real download solution?
(yes, I'm a bit angry at this. Never had a problem before. Give me a direct download alternative and I leave you alone.)
(The below is just my 2 cents and should be considered use at your own risk information. If you aren't comfortable with it do not try it, and if you do try it and screw up your installation, fair warning was given.)
If downloading the high resolution client repair tool is more than you bargained for, and you have not already deleted the (at first) seemingly corrupted client_highres.dat you may have luck fixing the problem as I did.
1. Look for defrag_client_highres_aux_1.da tx - if you do not have this file do not follow these instructions!!
2. Rename client_highres_aux_1.datx to backup_client_highres_aux_1.da tx
3. Rename defrag_client_highres_aux_1.da tx to client_highres_aux_1.datx
4. Test your client.
5. Delete backup_client_highres_aux_1.da tx if all goes well. Otherwise rename everything back and rejoin this thread at the beginning.
(The spaces in datx above are not deliberate, they are some weird forum thing.)
Also on this topic I have fixed my GUI (LOTRODefrag) to handle this automatically. It and DatOptimize (which already worked) are available at my blog (link in my signature). They are also entirely use at your own risk! (And they do not come with an instruction manual... :P)
However, finally, I have to agree with what was said above - internal de-fragmentation of dat files is nowhere near as important as it used to be. I ran my GUI over a copy of my recently upgraded LOTRO and it only found a few hundred fragments over all of the hundreds of thousands of entries inside the dat files.
Okay, so I feel really stupid for having missed the ''don't use the defrag if you have the high-res client" thing, but at least now I can confirm that this solution also works if you defragmented after the ROI update. Thanks Tilps!
just tried the hirez repair to fix the flashing neon green water issue that isengard should has never gone live with. it borked the game. i did the renaming deal and now the game is patching it's self. hope this works.
March is national target forward healing month! do your part!
That the Hires updater doens't work for former EU server players is just another sign of the contempt Turbine has for its non-us player base
That it doesn't bother to check compatibility until AFTER the 4GB download is a disgrace
That Turbine won't recognise of acknowledge the problem is simply beyond belief (there has been no comment from them about it in this official thread)
Having tried to use this worthless 4GB piece of junk masquerading as a "repair tool" to repair a failed update that would otherwise go no further (the famed unable to decrypt and deserialise error that has also not been fixed) I am simply disgusted.
To then expect me to use the horrific malware to download a new version of the client leaves me well . . . . speechless . . . .which is probably just as well right now!

Reason: omission
I just noticed that the installation i used is called "LOTRO Standard Res Install Files EN", and I also can not find the aforementioned client_hires file. Am I right to assume that this updater will "patch" the game to hires?
I'm trying this in the hope to make this game playable for me (not sure why it would make a difference, but I'm trying anything). I've been getting frequent game freezes (hard reset necessary) and following support's advice am now running everything on very low with the sound off... that's no way to play any game, i tell you.
Yes it would be nice if Turbine could modify this repair tool to look for the game files in spots other than the default install directory.
I also refuse to do a complete re-install.
Please can we have an updated version of this put out.
Also as people still seem to be using this tool is there any chance you could put a post explaining what files to remove to get rid of the defragger and put a message in the launcher linking to it.

the repair tool will work with lotro installed to any location where lotro is installed to which means if you installed lotro to location A then moved it to B windows will still think lotro is installed in point A and so will the repair tool.
it might be a nice idea for them to change the repair tool to ask where lotro is installed but afaik copy and pasting lotro from point A>B is not officialy recommended and there are a lot more things which need fixing so dont expect it to be changed any time soon. its been over a year since the datdefrag tool became unusable and that still hasnt been fixed and thats broken
Does this still works? I have a standard client and would like to upgrade it to the High-Res. I tried using it but Pando Media Booster always lags and it won't start downloading.
Honestly Turbine, this pando thing is so terrible I cannot even begin to tell you how much I want to throw my brand new computer across the room.
94Kbps download for this?! Are you kidding me? I just installed SWTOR from scratch, all 23Gb of it in 4 hours with download speeds of 970kbps UPWARDS! What on earth are you playing at? This says it will take 10 hours to download.
Please please please just give us the goddam direct download link will you? Honestly, what is wrong with your distribution team!?
I just installed Lotro for the first time a few weeks ago; did the standard-res install to save time and try it out asap. I do love the game and think I'll be here for awhile, so I'd like to upgrade to the hi-res version and found this thread since I was wondering if there was a way to simply upgrade my current installation...
But reading all this it doesn't sound so simple! I think I'm gonna uninstall the whole thing tonight before I go to bed and start my hi-res download then; it should be good to go by the time I get home from work tomorrow night.
One question though, will the reinstall wipe my keybinds and action bars set ups? Or is that info somehow stored server-side? I've seen it work both ways with others games. Not a big issue, but just wondering.
Good luck to all the people that got borked with this repair tool, that sucks : /
Forgive my ignorance but, is there a way to downgrade from hi res to standard res? I would like to upgrade to hi res, but not sure if my computer can handle it, so want to know if there is a quick way of downgrading instead of having to reinstall in case I need to.
I had a power outage yesterday, a couple actually, while playing LoTRO. After my power stabilized I could not log onto the game. I tried everything I could think of and then used the defrag tool in the game registry. It balked at fixing the highres files. I tried to log onto game and got as far as 'examine programs' in the update/login process. Red X and retry. A friend online found this thread and suggested I rename the highres files identified in this thread and see if they get rebuilt when I tried to load. I got as far as the character screen bt after selecting a character to load, the login hung and game stopped responding .. for as long as an hour. I looked for the highres files (which now had extension .old on the end) and they had vanished completely. So I downloaded the high res updater from the link in this thread. I get the message that it cannot find a downloaded version of the game and do a full download before using the updater. What do I do now? Do I have to delete and reinstall completely? Please help!!
I ended up deleting and doing a full reinstall .. no responses here and could not figure out a fix. 4 hours downloading a repair tool that would not work. 4 hours trying to find a fix. 5 hours downloading when I deleted the game. 1 hour patching and FINALLLY I could play again *sigh*. It would have been quicker to just delete and reinstall when things went wrong in the first place.
Extremely sorry to bump this old topic, but I can't seem to find anything else to help with this issue - I have downloaded the repair tool or highres updater, but it doesn't want to find my LOTRO install. I'm assuming this is because LOTRO wasn't initially installed via the Pando Media Craptastic booster, but rather the happycloud installer that I got on a DVD.
Now, I'm assuming that it's just looking for a registry entry telling it that Pando Media booster installed Lotro to [x] directory, and i'm more than willing to manually enter this if I knew exactly where to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do NOT want to re-download a whole 13GB of data.
Really? The file is gone and this is still here stickied as though it's remotely helpful? Really?
I'm capped at 10gb monthly bandwidth. I can probably make room for JUST the high-res files, but most certainly NOT a total re-download and re-install. I'm not resubbing if getting the game running is going to suck up over half a month's bandwidth or more.
I never ran the data defrag thing. I haven't played in 6 months, and while patching I had to delete my high res .dat files or it wouldn't patch. Now it's going to cost me 6+ gb just to patch these two files, and even more for a full reinstall. Sorry, it's not gonna happen.
My highres client files seem to have corrupted during the chaos of update11 patching. Is there a way to reinstall these files yet?
You need a full high resolution installer. Run the installer.
This tool as a solution for people who destroyed their installation years ago when another Turbine tool (the dat file defragger) destroyed their installation. The fix was for Turbine to take the dat file defragger off the web. Provided this tool as a solution for people that destroyed their installation. It was only intended to be available for use for a few months. Over time people would figure out that running the dat file defragger was a very bad idea.
Unless stated otherwise, all content in this post is My Personal Opinion.
Thanks Yula, but where do I find a high res installer? and how will it effect my current game files?
In my case, I use this version: http://store.steampowered.com/app/212500/
because it downloads fairly quickly via regular FTP from the Steam servers. This version will replace your existing installation. One annoyance with Steam is that you can't save the installer to use later if something goes wrong. Steam automatically deletes the installer after installation to free up space.

Ok thanks for your help, Yula. Guess I have to bite the bullet and download the whole thing...
