High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Due to changes in how high resolution .dat files are handled in Update 2, players who used the LOTRO Dat Defrag tool on their high resolution installs found they could no longer log into the game. Deleting the client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.dat will allow you to log into the game but will also revert your client to standard resolution.
For players who would like to restore their high resolution installs, we have created a new standard to high resolution updater. Before using this tool it is very important that you understand what it can and cannot do, as well as what it will do if used incorrectly.
If you have previously deleted your client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.dat files, this tool will place an older client_highres.dat file in your install directory. When you next log into the game, this will force your client to patch again to Update 2 with the full high resolution data package.
If you currently have a client that cannot log into the game because you ran the LOTRO Dat Defrag tool against your newly patched Update 2 high resolution game client, you must first delete the client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.dat files before running the standard to high resolution updater.
WARNING: If you currently have a working high resolution client that is fully patched to Update 2, running this tool will break your installation and you will be unable to log into the game. In the event you do accidentally run this tool against a working Update 2 installation, you must delete only the client_highres_aux_1.dat file and patch your game again.
WARNING #2: If you do not understand or are not comfortable doing any of the above, we strongly recommend you reinstall your game.
For those who wish to update a currently working standard resolution client to a high resolution client without having to fully reinstall, this tool will allow that as well. Please note this is not a version update nor is it a ‘pre-patch’ updater. It will not work on any client that is not patched to at least the November 2010 Update.
You can download the standard to high res updater here.Rick Heaton, Community Manager, The Lord of the Rings Online.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Thanks for giving us a way to fix this issue.
However couldnt you have given us a direct link to download this. I am on high speed cable and am getting 50KBps speed. I can normally get a file this size in 30 minutes or so. At this rate isengard will be out before it finishes. Also dont like P2P as it chews up my download cap.
I mentioned this in the tech support forums but there are still people who are using the defrager and breaking thier client. There are lots of people with this tool already downloaded and as you havnt put this in the known issues or announced it in the launcher people dont know there is a problem.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Out of curiosity ... what is the standard resolution client versus a high resolution client? And how do I know which one I am using ... and if I am using standard, how do I use high resolution?
(Currently running 1920x1080 in Ultra-High settings.)

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Ok now that I have finished downloading this I am unable to use it.
Try to launch the file and it tells me it is unable to locate a current installation of LOTRO (USA) and that I need to do a full reinstall.
Is there a particular place these files need to be placed for them to work? Note I do not have LOTRO in the default directory.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Reduce, huh?
I seem to remember something about that regarding NTFS.
Regardless, I don't defrag anymore because I'm running SSDs in both the desktop and the laptop. But it would be nice if you guys let others know about this in a more visible way.
Or, better yet, update the defrag utility to NOT corrupt the files.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
I downloaded but never used the tool. I've used the Auslogics Defrag tool since XP was the latest OS available. I have Auslogics defrag all drives weekly and am yet to have a problem.
Anybody know what the Lotro utility does that Auslogics doesn't?

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
(The below is just my 2 cents and should be considered use at your own risk information. If you aren't comfortable with it do not try it, and if you do try it and screw up your installation, fair warning was given.)
If downloading the high resolution client repair tool is more than you bargained for, and you have not already deleted the (at first) seemingly corrupted client_highres.dat you may have luck fixing the problem as I did.
1. Look for defrag_client_highres_aux_1.da tx - if you do not have this file do not follow these instructions!!
2. Rename client_highres_aux_1.datx to backup_client_highres_aux_1.da tx
3. Rename defrag_client_highres_aux_1.da tx to client_highres_aux_1.datx
4. Test your client.
5. Delete backup_client_highres_aux_1.da tx if all goes well. Otherwise rename everything back and rejoin this thread at the beginning.
(The spaces in datx above are not deliberate, they are some weird forum thing.)
Also on this topic I have fixed my GUI (LOTRODefrag) to handle this automatically. It and DatOptimize (which already worked) are available at my blog (link in my signature). They are also entirely use at your own risk! (And they do not come with an instruction manual... :P)
However, finally, I have to agree with what was said above - internal de-fragmentation of dat files is nowhere near as important as it used to be. I ran my GUI over a copy of my recently upgraded LOTRO and it only found a few hundred fragments over all of the hundreds of thousands of entries inside the dat files.Last edited by Tilps; Mar 25 2011 at 06:58 AM.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Just to be clear (and thanks for pointing it out, Forjo), if I have successfully patched and was already using the high res textures and haven't (in my case, forgot to) run the defrag tool and am logging in just fine:
1) Do nothing.
2) Never again run the defrag tool ever again.
Just want to be sure if I patched and playing I'm fine, and whether I should go near the defrag tool from this point on.
Thanks.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Imagine this is your hard drive after patching the game:
[xxLoxRxrdofxxinxxxthxxgsxxexx]
Defragging the hard drive would make it look like:
[xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxLoRrdofinthgse]
You can see that something's still not right. The contents of the .dat files are still not in order, meaning the drive head still has to jump around within the file and can't read it sequentially.
Using just Dat Defrag sorts the contents of the .dat files, so you end up with something like:
[xxLoxxrdofxxxxxthexxRingsxxxx]
Now it can read sequentially, but it can still be fragmented on the disk. If you do a Dat Defrag and THEN a disk defrag, you finally end up with:
[xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxLordoftheRings]
--
Is it worth doing anymore since Dat Defrag can break the game? Probably not, though you could move those two highres .dat files that Sapience mentioned to a different folder before running Dat Defrag, and then move them back afterwards. But I imagine other .dat files will be changing to the new format in the future, so why bother? Also, if you're running the game from a solid-state drive (SSD), it's completely unnecessary to do any sort of defrag (and disk defrags are very bad for SSDs).

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
I needed to do this in order to get into the game. Once I did, I was able to log in and play, and mostly everything was fine.
However, I'm having some texture issues while doing the new epic Book (Book 3). In the session play, a certain important lore character (whose name I won't spoil) had invisible leg and shoulder textures, resulting in him being a floating torso. Similarly, when dealing with some ghost-y characters later in the epic, they were washed out and white silhouettes (Possibly that is intentional, but I wasn't sure).
Given these texture issues I'm having (using the high-res settings), should I fool around with this fix? (I did run the datdefrag tool before playing for the first time, but I am able to log in the game currently).
(I did /bug the floating torso character, for whatever that's worth.).

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Well, I had already done before first logging in after the patch, but no consequences.
I notice now that the sticky defrag link is gone. Is this tool now not supposed to be used? Is this temporary or permanent? Have the dat files been redesigned so that this tool is not necessary?

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
The High Resolution Client Repair Tool should be able to fix your game install. The steps you would want to follow would be:
1. First ensure that the game and game launcher are fully closed out
2. Rename or remove client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.dat (ie. oldclient_highres.dat and oldclient_highres_aux_1.dat)
3. Run the High Resolution Client Repair Tool, which should download a new client_highres.dat file to your game installation directory
4. Relaunch the game after the 'client_highres.dat' download has completedLast edited by Thokal; Mar 25 2011 at 05:44 PM.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
I have the same question as others about datdefrag. Why not just update it so this doesn't happen in the future? Reduction to fragmentation isn't elimination which means eventually we will encounter the very thing dat defrag was designed to eliminate. So as long as the dat files can fragment we will need the dat defrag.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Well, until Sapience gets around to answering, I think the following is probably true:
1. The datdefrag as a tool someone built in their spare time - I'm sure Turbine would like to update it, but it's not a priority.
2. While an updated datdefrag would allow people to continue manually massaging their DAT files, having a manual tool that only a subset of forum-goers know about is far from ideal. Turbine would much rather figure out how to make the patcher stop making such a mess of the files in the first place, and they may feel that they'd rather focus on that instead of updating a broken tool.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Obviously that is the ideal solution as was basically implied in the post I replied to. However unless the ideal solution is reached prior to the need to be able to dat defrag then the best temporary solution is to update dat defrag. The big question is how long will it take before the dat file fragments enough to need defragging? If defrag is built into the client in some way so it defrags as needed then this concern would be moot. But as long as the dat file can fragment there will be a need to defrag.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
It worked. I ran the tool, did the re-patch, logged in, and re-did the session play. The texture issues were completely resolved. In fact, I discovered some other characters in there also were having texture issues. They looked 10 times better this time than they did before.
Due to the lack of an Enedwaith reflecting pool, I'm not able to re-verify the other instance that was having trouble at this time. I'll need to get an alt caught up to there before I can see it again. Unless someone knows a way.
Thanks for the tool!
Did you put the downloaded .exe file into your LOTRO directory? It worked fine for me. Or, well, it worked for me. Windows kept insisting there was a security problem, so I had to re-start it several times, but at least there was continuity between sessions. It took hours and consumed an amount of bandwidth disproportionate to its download speed, preventing me from doing things like watching Youtube videos in the meantime. Is that the effect of Pando Media Booster that everyone keeps pooh-poohing? I hope new players aren't coping with that while downloading the game. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy my game client is fixed, but the process was very painful.
It takes more than one update for that kind of fragmentation to be a problem. Hopefully Turbine will fix this tool, or build it into the launcher by the next update. But until then, I'm not going to worry too much about it. I'll just stop using datdefrag until they say it's okay again.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Thanks Eliel, At least I know it does work.
Yea I tried running it from the Lotro folder, from the desktop, in its own folder in the lotro folder etc but had no joy.
Will have to keep having a play around with it and see if I can solve what the issue is.
In terms of Pando that is a P2P programme. So you are uploading the file to others at the same time, that will be why the bandwith is higher than you expect. You can go into the settings and limit the upload speed if that is causing you issues.
Then your download speed is going to depend on who pando is connected to. If they are limiting thier upload speed then you are not going to get it fast.
I had just about finished downloading it when I thought about checking the options, Doh! On checking my usage for the day I found my uploads where up buy almost a gig on normal. Great for monthly cap!! Not.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Is there a link to the High Res Client Repair tool, or is that found under the game's load screen options?
I've moved the client_highres.dat and client_highres_aux_1.datx files out of the LOTRO folder and renamed them, but it seems attempting to launch LOTRO doesn't repatch the client/replace these files. So, I fired up the High Res Updater, which is going through the entire download now...which I'm fully prepared to let finish so I can avoid the problem I was having:
After Update 2, I ran that DatDefrag Suite program and have since been experiencing random client freezing/crashing, resulting in me having to restart the whole computer. I never once experienced the inability to login, but random client lock-ups are just as annoying.
Issue Possibly Resolved: After re-reading the original post, it appears the standard-to-high res updater IS the repair tool. I'll reply or edit this post if I can log-in and the lockups stop.Last edited by Kragald; Mar 27 2011 at 04:04 AM.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Yep, that standard to high res updater seemed to resolve my issue of client lockups. I was actually able to run 2 skirms, do both Ale Association and Inn League challenges, and several other things today without a single lotro client lockup.
So yeah, if you're using a high-res lotro client, don't defrag it. If you do - follow Sapience's directions in the OP and use the standard to high res updater.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
This explains why my sky textures vanished again.....
At least that's the theory I'm leaning towards. I had this problem before and after a complete reinstall, my game worked great.
Defrag tool may be the issue.
I'll test that theory.

Turbine,
I ususally keep my frustrations to myself, but HERE HERE yurick75! I got bit by this tonight. Why was it not announced in the launcher again??? Come on......
Luckly there was another post that saved me from using the media downloader. Rename some files (in my case) and LOTRO works again withOUT downloading an un-needed 4 GB to repair.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
So no way to defrag hi-res? The claim that its not needed is completely wrong.. My load times are absolutely horrible and my application is installed on a raid 0+1 scsi3 15k rpm volume using a server-grade hardware raid adapter. My rig is comprised of the best components money could buy 6 months ago.
It literally takes me 10 minutes to load after selecting my character and clicking enter. In game loading is excruciating slow as well. I'm on a very fast network with sub-100ms pings to nearly every region I have tested, including the LOTRO servers. I have zero packet loss after a 4-day long ping test.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
I for one would like to see an updated defrag tool provided. A single 4 GB file will fragment and degrade in performance. Using the old defrag tool was an effective way to keep the client running at peak efficiently.
Think of it this way.....the faster folks get into the game, the more likely they are to spend less time waiting, and more likely they are to spend time in the Turbine store……spending $$.//\BullGod/\\ - Kinship: Guardians Of Archet

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Having the same issue. Just moved to a new 64bit Win7 Pro PC. Previous machine was XP with game installed to E Drive. Copied game directory to new machine's c:\program files(x86) folder. Went through .net 1 and C installs to get it running again without issue. Game works fine. Tried to update to high res and got the error.
I suspect the installer is looking for something in the registry, but don't know what.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
I'm also having trouble here. I hadn't logged on in a couple of months, and after all the patch updates, I got the same error that everyone else did. I went to the forums and read, and changed the name of client_highres to old_client_highres, but that didn't help. I then downloaded this program and ran it. That didn't help either. When I launched LOTRO again, it stopped at the same place with the same error message, and it didn't try to update any patches.
So what do I do now? I don't know if that's the reason, but I haven't been able to find a file called client_highres_aux.datx in my folders.

Shouldn't you just be able to rename the two hires files before you run the defrag and then rename them back afterward? Or is there more then these two files that get trounced?

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
From the sound of things, it's an issue with files over 4G, of which the hi-res texture files are currently the only ones. So your solution *should* work, theoretically, assuming I've understood the problem correctly.
Personally, I wouldn't mess around with it. The risk is too high.

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
Likewise, I'm running off of a brand new Win7 64bit PC. The launcher starts, it flashes some updates, 10, but doesn't seem to download anything, moves to the server screen, I can hit play, but after that, I get pop-up from Windows saying something I can't read fast enough. The first time I ran the post-update client, my system asked if I wanted to run DX11, I said yes of course since I can.
Ironically I'm watching over a go-live of a clients contest, and dealing with pre-launch issues. This isn't amusing, even if I can sympathize. IT is going to take 8 hours to bloody well download yet another client, because of course we still can't order update disks to save our lives or throttled bandwidth.Benjimir, Founder and Leader

Re: High Resolution Client Repair Tool
The high res client file is no where on any of my hard drives, so I can't rename or delete it to allow for a clean high-res patch install. I'm having absolutely no luck with anything that I've tried, and I've been scouring the internet for hours trying to figure it out. I was really looking forward to some good game time, since I actually have a few days off from work, but now it looks like I'm stuck trying to fix all of my computer problems.
As a side note, I AM doing a fresh download of LOTRO onto one of my externals, but I'm really hoping that I don't have to delete and start over from my pc. I try to leave my externals stationary as much as possible to avoid anything disastrous, but my laptop goes everywhere with me.
Any more advice??
