Thread: Unable to create first character

Downloaded today, thought LOTR would make a good MMO got the setup no hiccups, already installed/uninstalled/reinstalled trying to figure out whats going on. for some reason when I try to make a character, there is no race selection and it's hindering me from continueing. any thoughts?

I have now turned off my firewall- reinstalled again and no improvements. that makes me doubt it's by my error, so my first impression of this game: not impressed. might change my mind later, if I bother, but so far not impressed at all.

I am also having this problem.

You have to start up using Dx9, Dx10 is bugged for some.

This is a Direct X problem that has been affecting a lot of new players since last fall's conversion to F2P. It's unfortunate, but at least it's an easy fix.

how do you change it?

so, do I simply uninstall direct x 10 find d9 and refuse to allow the game to auto instal d10? because I hear thats next to impossible, but I've never tried, but then I don't know how. Direct x doesn't show up in my program files so I'm not even sure where it's located, what has been your successful method? if it helps to know: I'm running windows 7.

On the character select screen choose options. It is listed under Graphics Options.

-or- you can set it manually in the userpreferences.ini file located in your my documents/lord of the rings online.

-or- you can simply set the game to run in XP compatability mode (I believe that will force Dx9)

For most players who have this issue, it only affects the character creation screens. So once your character(s) are created and you're just going to be logging into the game with them, you can set it back to DX10 if you want.

(There is another problem that makes some computers have problems even in the main game world with DX10 or above, but that problem is much more rare than the one that affects the character creation screens.)
