Today I saw this player wearing an armor piece much higher than their level as their cosmetic outfit. How is this possible? I tried it myself but says my character's level is too low to equip the armor piece.
I think I understand why they have it set up this way, but the following still bothers me.
There is a helm that drops in Vol 1 called Himhar (little eagle symbol on top), and I want my main, a guardian to have access to in the wardrobe. He has this cosmetically equipped, but has gotten rid of it long before there was a wardrobe. I'd like to mess around with a new helmet, but I don't want to lose that one. So, on my lore-master, I had her grab that helm hoping to throw it in the wardrobe for my guardian to wear. However, she cannot put the item into the wardrobe since she can't wear heavy armor. If there is heavy armor in the wardrobe already, she could wear it cosmetically, but she can't put it in there herself.
So, since my main deleted the item, I have to level up a heavy armor character to that book quest in order to put it in the wardrobe so that my guardian, who is already wearing it cosmetically, can have free access to it in the wardrobe. I don't want to lose access to the helm, but I would like to wear a different one every once in a while.
I sort of figure that they have it set up this way so that people don't roll on BoA armor that their class can't use and they want to use it cosmetically.
It doesn't work for me. It says, "only items you can use may be placed in your wardrobe."
I believe this is WAI. The char Putting the item in the wardrobe has to be able to equip it; but as long as it's In there already, anyone can Use it cosmetically. So an LM can't put a Medium or Heavy armor Into the wardrobe, but they can Use a Medium or Heavy Already In it.
Correct answer: In order to equip items [armour] above your level (even if only cosmetically), you must have a character associated with your account which is able to wear said piece of armour.
Basically, to equip cosmetically (without the effects) an item of let's say, level 65 minimum; your character doesn't NEED to be that level, however one of your characters does (as in, an alt).
This angered and confused me at first too, and all I ever got was "use it as an outfit and it will work". Totally untrue. Only after a few days of constantly asking in various region's advice channels did I finally get the answer I was looking for (and sort of assumed anyway).
It won't let me equip armor below my level cosmetically, Do i need to buy wardrobe space?
You need to do this way:
1) Buy some wardrobe space
2) Have a character that can equip the item put it in the wardrobe
If the highest level character on your account is a level 20. There is no possibility of ever cosmetically equipping level 21-75 gear.
If you want your guardian to cosmetically equip a level 60 piece of Hunter class armor. You need a Hunter on your account that is level 60+ with that item.
It is not a very good implementation given the avatar appearances you can create via high level alternate characters on your account.
IMHO - Turbine should remove all these restrictions on the wardrobe. If you can get your hands on it. You can put the item in the wardrobe. Any character can display the look.
Unless stated otherwise, all content in this post is My Personal Opinion.
There's a couple other bloggers that focus on cosmetic use but I can't remember them now. I'm posting up this one because she's on Twitter a lot so I remember the name.
Not sure if this helps or not or if it even fits the problem entirely but when I first started playing a while back and was trying out wardrobe/cosmetics. One thing I didn't realize at first and heard other people make the same mistake. Do not use the front tab on the char screen to place cosmetic items or items higher than level. Don't click on them cause they will default to you 'equipment' slots on the front part of char screen and will not always work. You have to click on the 'cosmetic outfits' tab and there you can just drag and drop any kind of armor/cosmetic most of the time regardless of level/armor type from the wardrobe.
I know that was long winded and might not even have been original question but was thinking of that when reading the replies. Hope it helped somewhat.
(hehe I was a moment too late..previous post much better than mine hehe)

2) Have a character that can equip the item put it in the wardrobe
Not always the case. The character who puts an item into the wardrobe doesn't have to be able to use it himself, at least not in all cases. For example, quest rewards used as cosmetics; they're BtC, but even if they're not usable by the char who got it, they can put it into the wardrobe. My minstrel has put tons of medium and heavy armor pieces into the wardrobe.
"HELP!!!!??" is not an appropriate thread title.

It has come to my understanding that nowadays the only catch with the wardrobe is that items need to be bound to put them in there (this has changed from prior incarnations, I believe).
For drops or items otherwise not bound to you, this means you must first equip them to bind them, which of course requires you to be able to wear them.
Quest reward armour is always bound and (mostly? always, even?) without level restriction, so you can generally put those items into the wardrobe without problems.
Hmm, I don't know what some people's problem is, on my lvl 15 warden, I have lvl 54 heavy armour, what I did was put what you want in wardrobe, open character panel with wardrobe panel still in the bacckground then directly from the wardrobe, drag the armour into designated cosmetic slot. Any more information or help or even just a chat send a tell to lvl 70 Rk Throstif or lvl 15 warden Rembadlas. ( I also have a lvl 75 cloak cosmetic )
since ROI came out (it may have been sooner idk but this is when i noticed it) any character can put any item into the wardrobe. you can craft a lvl75 heavy chestpiece. send it to a level 6 minstrel. that level 6 minstrel can then put it into the wardrobe (i say level 6 only because thats when you get out of intro) there are NO restrictions on placing items into the wardrobe anymore and there havent been any for at least several months

Not sure it works that way. Unless they're dedicated cosmetics, it looks like items have to be bound to the char who puts them in the wardrobe, so the example with the 75ish heavy armor on the lvl 6 minstrel wouldn't work. Only yesterday my minstrel found a really pretty lvl 48 BoE medium armor while grinding orcs in Angmar. As I don't have a lvl 48+ char on that server who can wear medium or heavy armor, there's no way to get this thing into the wardrobe. It's vendor trash.

i have placed heavy and medium armor in the wardrobe with my rune-keeper before so i know for a fact that this works. you can also ignore rep restrictions so for example you could get the crafted ajokoira/lejiona cosmetics (kindred with forochel just to make all of the pieces) and put them in your wardrobe regardless of rep.
edit: the item does not have to be bound. i have borrowed BoE items to put them in wardrobe then sent them back without ay problems
I know there hasn't been any action on this thread for a while but if anyone is still reading this can they explain how it works?
I have seen characters wearing cosmetically armour that is outside both their level and class but when I attempt a simple cloth hat on my Lvl 7 loremaster I get an erro saying my level is too low. I am only trying to slot it into the cosmetic slot so I don't understand why it won't work. Any tips anybody?

Have you read through the thread? You cannot simply take the item from your inventory and put it into a cosmetic slot, because you will receive class/level errors. You instead have to put the item into the wardrobe, then drag it from the wardrobe into your cosmetic slot.
