I'm now Captain lvl 44, and my friends, a Burglar lvl 42 and a Hunter lvl 40, and we are unable to defeat this beast. Last time, we died in two hits. Is there any trick to defeat it?

While Ivar's new instance is a 3-man, the reality is that if you are going to tackle him at fair levels, you will either need to bring a tankish class and/or a primary healer class.
As you note, Ivar hits hard, so you do need someone able to survive his hits long enough to accomodate the cooldown of captain heals, or you need a healer class with shorter healing cooldowns.
Ivar is also apparently healed by the minions that he summons (but I never noticed this first-hand), and contribute to the overall damage inflicted on your group, so you need to dispatch them as quickly as possible. And of course doing so provides opportunities to use Rallying Cry.
If I recall correctly he has power-sapping debuffs (disease-based, I think), so bring approprate potions. Mezzing or trapping his minions is generally a waste of time because half of them are ranged attackers, and Ivar appears to release them from mezzes anyway.

Good luck.
My friends and I (level 35 guard and 32 minstrel, I'm 33 Burglar) got absolutely rocked today. It was hopeless even skipping the challenge and wailing on banner carriers. He's crazy hard in the three man. Maybe if I was a Warden or something, I don't know. All I do know is that he is ultra nasty and he had 3 to 4 adds pop on our last try. It was just ugly.
Me(37 Warden), a 39 healer, and a 52 Runekeeper beat him the other day. We had been trying since like level 32 which is the "level" ,lol, of the instance and kept getting stomped. Best strategy we came up with was me not tanking the adds and having the RK switch from healling to kill them as fast as he could.
First time I did this was on level it was with a guard, hunter and mini. We actually had a harder time with Grimbark than Ivar. Both were tough fights on level. I just did this the other night with 3 level 39s Cappy, hunter and champ. Went smooth as silk. Controlling the adds was really key to the fight. We also 4 manned Fortress with the fourth being a warden. These were my first experience as a cappy doing main healing. Much tougher than on my RK
Did it 2 man with a friend. Me on 50 rk, him on 49 champ. It wasn't easy for sure but we got through it and had a blast. Might have to try it on level sometime since that would be much more challenging with fewer skills to heal or controls adds.
Unless they changed this instance since the beginning of the year our kin has successfully completed Ivar a number of times with our lowest levels at 34-guard, 33-LM and 32-Mini. Strategies can be found on our kin website.
