My wife, who plays a mini, started a champ. I watched her for a while, and this is what she was doing.
Runs into a group of mobs:
"Ooooh I'm going to die!"
"Oh. They're already dead. I got lucky."
"Ooooh I'm going to die!"
"Whew. It died. I got lucky."
She did this non-stop the whole time. Her conclusion: Champions are really strong or she's very lucky. She said she was used to having full health all the time on her mini.
I thought it was funny. I was wondering if you had the same reactions when you first started.
I have a champion as my main but I've leveled a minstrel alt which I now consider my second in line (I rank order my alts in terms of importance to me).
Since I had my champ first, I tend to play my minstrel more like him. I tend to let my morale get really low, as long as I'll kill the other guy first. Kind of funny to see your wife with the opposite experience.

Completely the same for me. I leveled my champ first, then LM, captain, and burg, in that order, and I have a hunter in the low 60s. I probably play my support classes a little more balls-to-the-wall than I should as a result. Lol. But, in seriousness, playing multiple classes makes you better at the game in general. Because I started with a champ, I tend not to freak out if my health dips suddenly when playing one of my other toons. Playing champ to end game makes you naturally better at managing risk, regardless of what classes you play. Similarly, after having played LM, I started to look at fights more strategically than before. Being able to evolve your perspective like that is one of the things that keeps the game interesting.
Wow! You got your wife to play LOTRO? I've been trying for 3 years!
Ah, man, me too. Every once in a while she'll look over my shoulder while I'm shouting about some raid or other and hints that she might try it out, but it's always a tease.
Hehe...all my previous toons had been ranged/tactical...so it was very hard for me to get within melee range...I'd inch a step or two toward the baddie...then another...and another...then it'd aggro and I'd fight the urge to run away to range it!! After a week I was running full tilt AT baddies yelling "shing shing!"

We should start a support group.
I does happen xD my husband got me playing almost two years ago xD

It does happen. Took my partner three months to suck me in (although we did play Asheron's Call and City of Heroes together before LOTRO) but now I'm a lifer and I have more alts than he does
Anyway, back on topic.
I started with a hunter and so when I first started my champ was "OMG it's in melee range Imma DIEEEEEE!!!!!1!!one...oh, phew, it's dead..."
Now I run in full tilt with the SHING SHING! Kill it before it kills you, that's the champion way!
Although he's martial traited with heavy shield included, so he isn't all about the SHING SHING all the time...I have tanked GS with him
Which leads into the fact that I agree with the sentiment that playing alts rounds out your characters...I used to die whenever something would get into melee range on my hunter...now I've changed up the way I play and switched some of her traits, and she can easily handle pulling aggro on one elite mob and taking the hits until she burns it down. Playing a guard and warden taught me things - I wouldn't have thought of tanking with my champ until I learned how to do it on my guard and warden.
The Shing Shing is very, fundamentally useful even when Martial traited. 8 target, 8 meter AoE complete with threat gen. How can you knock it? Ever?
Wasn't intended as a knock to the skill itself, sorry you read it that way. It's one of my most used skills. Meant it more as a description of the method of running in and aggro'ing everything and burning it down - SHING SHING is the epitome of the AOE DPS blender champ rather than the sword and board tank champ.
My intention was not to imply that you were knocking the skill, but rather a general observation at how awesome the skill is overall in the form of a rhetorical question. I blame text communication.
In the event you were using "SHING SHING" as a way of life rather than referencing the skill itself, then yes, I agree. I also add however that the best Champtank is an aggressive Champtank, and the Way of the Shing is still highly relevant to tanking, considering DPS is aggro for Champs, even in Glory (especially in Glory).

I, too, blame text communication - very difficult to communicate tone and body language, after all - plus I hab a code in my dose, and it's making me less intelligent and thus less eloquent.
I agree with your point regarding dps being aggro - when I Champtank in Glory I must make heavy use of the Shing plus everything else in my big bag o'DPS in order to hold aggro.
I think my comment arose out of me relatively recently respeccing him to martial. I had a lot of fun going cojones to the wall when I was doing it, but I'm really loving his increased ability to sword and board and champtank, it's like I discovered a new character almost...he can now do content that he just couldn't before.

One of the primary reason I can't stand people who refuse to heal on RKs, or tank on Champions, or CC on Hunters... Sure, it's not your primary role, but you have the ability to do it. Expand your knowledge of your class and be a better player for it. Never know what you might find. There's a reason you have that third of your class available to you.

I think its just because a Mini can out-DPS a champ?
