I just subscribed to LOTRO and I am downloading the game as we speak.
Because this game seems very deep in the character development and the community seems very mature I might be playing for a while and I might be interested in the expansions.
I was wondering if its possible to get the expansions via digital purchase/download.
Yes, the expansions are available in the in-game Store. You can purchase them either by buying points with real money or by earning points through gameplay (or both).

Also, there are still a few boxed copies floating around. That's another way to get them. (If you go this route, you shouldn't use the disc from the box at all; just the product key that comes with it.)
My brother and I bought the boxed Mines of Moria, collector's edition online. Mine hasn't shown up yet, but he got his today and was NOT able to add the key to a free (premium) account. He gets an error that say he can't upgrade an expired account. I'm not sure if this is billing website issue, or if it's intended. The box should include 30 days of VIP, but apparently you have to already be at VIP status to enter the code.

Does anyone know anything about this issue?
Oh yeah. I forgot about this. These key codes were designed to only work on subscribed accounts. They could not be used to reactivate an account that was unsubscribed. Not only did you have to buy the box. You had to pay 15 dollars to subscribe if you were a former subscriber. You ended up subscribed for 60 days.
Sadly, they can be used to create a brand new account without paying a subscription fee. This does not help someone with an existing account. I believe it is all explained in the fine print. Either on outside of the box. Or somewhere inside.
I used the digital upgrade. The digital upgrade includes no game time. Can only be used by a subscriber. Since I have lifetime subscriptions, these restrictions do not trip me up.
The free accounts are being treated the same as an inactive subscriber account.

If this is true, I hope it can be sorted out with customer service. I have a Mines of Moria box in the mail too. If I have to pay extra to activate it, I'll probably just resell it instead.
I don't see how the codes could have been designed for subscribed accounts, since the Mines of Moria box includes Shadows of Angmar for new players, which existing subscribers would have no need for. The only edition of Mines of Moria which didn't come with the full original Shadows of Angmar was the digital download expansion-only version.
I would also like to know if this is working as intended, and which MoM boxes are affected. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the F2P model that you have to become a VIP to be able to add a boxed Expansion to your account.
If a product key includes 30 days of play time, those 30 days count as VIP access. Please note that many, but not all types of keys include play time. If the key does include an upgrade, but no time, it won't include any VIP access.
If a product key does give 30 days, the account will be full VIP during that time, and will downgrade to Premium automatically at the end, the same way any other VIP account will downgrade to Premium, unless a subscription plan is selected. This includes the same perks such as the trait and riding access noted above, the monthly VIP points, etc.
Product keys can be used to upgrade accounts, even Beta or Trial accounts. If they include time, that will be added when the key is applied for the upgrade. Only one key of a specific type can be added to an account. Keys can't be used to add time if it isn't ALSO applying an upgrade. There are some restrictions about adding keys that might be considered a downgrade (adding an Angmar key to a Moria trial). If you have any problems when trying to upgrade, please contact the Account Management department.
