Well, for those of you who missed it yesterday, Pumyra's RP Prompts made its triumphant return after a month off due to work and my vacation. Be sure to stop by!
For those interested in creating new blogs, I'm pretty much everywhere on the internet. I use a cross-posting service called Posterous (http://www.posterous.com) that cross-posts between Wordpress, Tumblr, Blogspot, Twitter, Facebook... and over 22 other different services! I can't recommend it enough for the die-hard blogger.
So, I can be found almost anywhere. RP Prompts can also be found in any of these journals, though they're usually listed there with a "character development" banner.
As someone obviously experienced in blogging sites, which one do you like best? Looking at your sites, I like the look of your blogspot one much better than the look of your wordpress one. Is blogspot easier to personalize and make pretty? I started up something on wordpress recently, and I am thinking of switching over completely from mylotro to an outside blogging site. I just can't stand mylotro right now.

I've been away on holidays (still am, as a matter of fact) and opened my.lotro to be utterly confused. Where is everything? Why don't I understand it any more? Why is there not a dedicated blog page any more? Where's all my pictures? Hopefully it will all be sorted out. I've got a lot of posts by you all to catch up on!
Anyway, hello people. How are you all? I'm excellent, relaxing in sunny Spain. Anything exciting happening in your respective lives?

Personally, my favorite is Posterous itself for ease of use/posting. With Posterous, you can either post via web or you can simply email your blog and *poof* it's posted. And again, using Posterous, it auto-posts to a variety of services all at once. Don't worry about people emailing your site, by the way, nothing is posted unless it's from an email source that you yourself link up from inside the Posterous control panel.
As far as style, Posterous actually supports CSS stylesheets and the like, too, so if you're skilled with such things (I haven't been for years...) then you can customize and prettify things to your heart's content. Most Tumblr stylesheets can be tweaked to use with Posterous, so that's something to consider if you go that route.
Now, as far as premade templates, the best templates I've seen are mostly for Tumblr. They range from clean and simple, to really decorative and elaborate. A lot of what you see, especially on my Posterous site, is from a lot of tinkering and poking around in the code. However, there are plenty of sites that offer a number of predesigned templates for free. It just depends on your skill and comfort level with mucking about with such things.
I find that WordPress and Posterous are about equal when it comes to exposure/reads, if your goal is to have your stuff actually get read. Blogspot has its share of readers, but I don't think it's near as popular anymore as WordPress.
My Wordpress, Blogspot, and Tumblr blogs use pre-made templates provided by each site's template gallery. My Posterous blog is a modified pre-made template. I added the Twitter button, the Facebook widget, and the link sections. I'm the kind of person, though, who is a minimalist when it comes to the sites I host my writing on. After all, I want the focus to be on what's written, not on the "ooh, shiny" background I have, or the music jarring the reader from reading. That's why each of my blogs has a fairly straightforward style without delving too much into the bells and whistles department.
Okay, it's me again. I did warn you all that I was catching up on my Falathlorn day posts. Here's my entry for the Photo and Art contest. I will send Whart a mail though she can't reply to it and probably post to the Tinnu uin Galadhrim forums as well....
Mirabile visu! My blog has returned to http://my.lotro.com/rannadylin (or whatever user number that now redirects to )! I was able to copy to it the various entries I had posted at Wordpress in the interim, and it is wonderful to see all the old posts back in place too. So, if you haven't already read about Ales and Tales in Celondim or the LMB album launch party on http://linettslore.wordpress.com, you can now find them on my My.LOTRO page. What a relief!

Hey, guys. I was thinking... since Turbine has decided to remove any indication of who post are by in the feed, perhaps we could do it ourselves? For example, you could call a post "Fionnuala's rant about how Turbine ruined MyLOTRO" or "Why you should put it all back the way it was by Fionnuala". Just a thought.

I'm really disappointed in how broken myLOTRO continues to be. I'm actually tinkering with a WordPress/BuddyPress set-up at the moment. You are all welcome to stop by and poke around.
I have another idea. I despair at getting my old widgets back as the adding of my banner sent them into the fires of Mordor. So, I'm thinking about making a widget for my blog page of "Featured Bloggers." I didn't friend everyone who was on that list before the change, but I did friend a good many. I will be making the list of people who are active right now and adding people who should be on the list like Orphy and Whart. And yes, Byrdie, I'm going to do it with pictures! People like Berethron who have to blog outside of mylotro, I can link to their offsite blogs. If anyone would rather not be featured, let me know. I'll post a link when I finish the widget. Right now it's back to paper grading for me!

Fionnuala, I think that's a good idea but do they still have restrictions on post name size? For those of us who have longer names it might really limit what we can name our posts but other than that it's a great idea (and really the only way atm to sort of flag our posts as ours).
Gaiagil, that's really cool, I'll be sure to stop by (though for some reason I cannot get to your blog atm?? it redirects me to the forum page or tells me your page does not exist) and check out your banner for some good reads I too, accidentally sent my left hand widgets into the ether so I feel your pain
I get that they have 'more important things' to work on atm...but it still really hurts in many ways. My blog is closing in on its 2 year anniversary and I've all but stopped posting here because everything I do seems to break something >.<. Hope they turn things around.

I'm fairly well-versed in website maintenance and administration, so that part won't be hard. I'm just not deeply familiar with the BuddyPress platform yet. I tried it a year or two ago and couldn't get half of the features to work, so I abandoned the project I was trying to use it for. So far, it seems to do everything I expect it to, but I really need people to register and poke and prod; attempt to make posts, groups, etc. Put it through its paces!
Just like a regular WordPress account. This particular blog has the Community Blog plug-in along with BuddyPress, so any posts you make *should* go to the front page.
I got an error as well (though I clicked 'remember me' 'cause I'm lazy like that ) and I get an error now every time I try to go anywhere on the site:

I missed Ales and Tales this Monday because I was dead tired by the time it was starting up. Luckily, I was able to get in some fun RP in Rivendell at the Enderi Days ceremony before I hit the sack. I wanted to go to A&T's too because I had a poem to recite.

I have some catching up to do on everyone's blog posts. I've been swamped with RL stuff so I'll be having some fun reading all the recent posts you all have written. This is my only source for finding new blog posts on my.lotro - I'm so glad we keep this thread updated.

Pumyra, I looked about your new site and unfortunately I cannot understand how it works. Where do the individual blog entries show up; is it like a RSS feed site? Can I link a post from my.lotro or elsewhere to there? And would I need to create a new account or could I use an old WP account; I have far too many accounts as it is, so I'm hoping a new one is not needed.
I've enjoyed reading everyone's updates today and have a short story (as always, based off an in-game event) to share on my own blog. No need to rate it.
Posted my response to Pumyra's RP Prompt here as well as on the new MyLotro United site (as a comment in response to Pumyra's Prompt Post). Hope to see more and more of you checking it out!

The posts from everyone all show up on the main page of the site (link above). As well there is a neat activity page that shows all the updates for all the users. But as for the rest I'm unsure as I'm still getting used to the site myself. Sorry, I'm sure Pumyra can answer most of your questions though!

You'd only 'need' a posterous account if you wanted to post once and have it show up on multiple sites automatically (which is what I thought you were asking - like I use it for The Mad Scribbler to generate more hits to be perfectly honest as it is such a new blog, I just post it on posterous then it shows up on the posterous blog, The Mad Scribbler and Twitter/Buzz without me having to do anything else). For now I've just been copying/pasting the exact same thing on both sites (M.L and MLU), takes like 5 mins (and that's with my publish box missing here and having to wait for the stupid thing to autosave). There's plenty of places to simply place a link to your blog on MLU or you could do what Pumyra did and just post an update here (or there) with a link back to the main post.
The main thing I like MLU for is the Activity page that lets you easily see what everyone is up to. The entire site is just so fluid and easy to navigate (and I have a publish box! ).

They should show up on the front page of MyLOTRO United. Battlemaiden's post will be the first to test this feature, so I'm hoping it works!

Sure, we have a forum if you just want to toss links around. I really don't want to see off-site links made as front page posts though, that would just cheapen the site, in my opinion. Full-length posts are preferred. You are more than welcome to cross-post between blogs, as battlemaiden stated and illustrated, though.

Yes, you would need to create a new account. No, you cannot use an old WP account. The site is built on the WordPress platform, true, but it is independently hosted by me on my own personal webspace, so it has no connection or link to the actual Wordpress.com database. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but as this is a separately hosted site, it uses an entirely different database, thereby requires entirely new authentication. That's just how it is.

Honestly I have no interest in blogging elsewhere (the one thing that has been my goal since I started was to become a Featured Blog or Scribe of the Ages, and I can hardly do that on MLU), so for me its either blog here or stop altogether. As much as I like writing, everyone else seems to be leaving. Therefore, why keep writing? Who's reading it if no one is left here?

It's not like people aren't leaving without just cause. Turbine has ruined the site for many of us and made a travesty of a community that was once close-knit and supportive. Now, we can barely find one another's posts, make posts of our own, or comment without having some kind of meltdown. You think you're depressed? Try talking to people like myfreezr who lost EVERYTHING they'd written on MyLOTRO -- all the people who's blogs of 4+ years vanished overnight.

To be perfectly honest, if all you were looking to do is get a shiny title, then you're writing for the wrong reasons. You should write because you love to do it, not because of what you'll get out of it if you do. That was the beauty of the MyLOTRO community, we all posted because we loved what we did and what we wrote. Several of us lost years of work, others of us can't even post, others can't show the support for our favorite writers like we used to. That ALL has an impact on what we're doing here and why some of us chose to leave.

I'm sorry to hear that you'd join something that I've worked so hard to build then leave simply because it doesn't have an online popularity contest attached. Then again, if all you're looking to garner from being part of the community is a spiffy title, then maybe you're missing the point of what MLU is about.
I don't mean to come off as harsh, but people are leaving for a reason. It's not like we up and decided to leave willy-nilly. Turbine drove us to these desperate straits. It's sad to hear that there are those who would refuse to support an endeavor built with THIS community in mind because it's "just another log-in to remember" or "a site that doesn't give me a title if I post enough". There's more to the MyLOTRO community than that. Much more. That's what I'm trying to preserve with MLU.
I suppose it boils down to why you write. I created a wordpress blog because I was tired of writing fanfic and wanted to get back to writing original fiction. I'm currently crossposting here on M.L and on MLU when I do write for Lotro. The reason I blog is to connect with others, especially writers/other bloggers and frankly that is becoming so difficult on M.L, whereas MLU is a great community tool.
And just to warn you, they haven't had a new Scribe in over 6 mos (and not for lack of nominating, because I myself have nominated at least 3 bloggers since the last was announced) and they haven't had a new featured in nearly as long.

Don't go. You've got readers, and as far as I'm concerned you are a Scribe of the Ages. My widget, when I get it done, does include you, and couldn't not include you. You are one of the gems of My Lotro. I am hoping, actually, that more of us will set up a widget for those gems so that any visit to any of the main bloggers' pages will get you a link to more wonderful posts.
MLU is a great new resource, but it is still in its infancy. I have yet to figure out how to actually post to the site, and I don't have a page there like I do here (as far as I can tell.... I'm still exploring it). I like what we had here, and I believe we will have it again. I like being able to individualize my page and my posts within a community. I like the stats and other interesting information about my character that is included on my page. I don't see that elsewhere, so I'm staying here and trying to tough it out.
Pumyra's post to you is too harsh, but she, like many others, like you and I, is suffering over this loss, and her reaction to you was partly a reaction to Turbine. I like that she is trying to do something about it instead of sit back and wallow.... or quit writing...
Like you, I only started blogging here at My Lotro. I don't have an outside blog, and I don't have time to maintain one. We need to hang tight. I hope with all my heart that this situation will improve by the time we meet for the Winter Blogmoot. Wait it out with me, okay?
Do I think Pumyra could have been more diplomatic? Yes. But personally, I agree with her on all points. The quote I live by (and it pertains to writing, but I feel its connotations are far-reaching and can be applied to every endeavor one undertakes) is by Cyril Connolly: "Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self." I personally think that whether you write or act or any thing you do should be done because you love it and want to do it, not for any other reason. Is it wrong to want someone to appreciate what you do or to encourage you or tell you that they love your work? Of course not, if you love something and put your heart and soul into it then you should want others to love it as well but that shouldn't be the sole reason you do it. And you shouldn't fault people for leaving because Turbine has seemingly given up a long time ago on M.L and they want to keep the community tight-knit and together and MLU is the only way they see to do that in the foreseeable future. Especially for people like me for whom everything about this site is broken, from the global posts feed on the main page to the missing publish box and widgets.
I think Travisimo is a great asset to this community and has great potential as a writer...but he should be here because he wants to be here and for no other reason. I hope he stays and keeps on writing!

The title is also the name of our kinship, which is obviously just a bit of humor. The story itself, however, will not be quite so humorous as the hero Cham (me!) gets himself into a lot of trouble
I don't write because I want the title, I write because of the readers. True, the title was the first thing that got me introduced to blogging, but isn't why I write.
I've been writing for longer than just this blog.
I understand some peoples' leaving, such as Battlemaiden with her vanished publish box, but some I don't even understand. I've found some who left with no reason, and after a lot of those I began to just get weary.
Your accusations are really unfounded, like saying all I want is a title and making me feel bad because your hurt that I'd leave quickly. Think about what I previously said: do you see me stating that I'd leave MLU because of a contest? The contest is simply a goal I set before myself.
The answer comes down to one thing: Sure, I like to set myself a goal but that does not by any means suggest that that is the reason I am here. It's very shallow of you to say that.
I fully support MLU and read blogs through it, but I love MyLotRO even in its' current state, and wish to support it as well. If we all leave MyLotRO, do you think Turbine is going to get any closer to improving it? If I stay, and more also stay, perhaps they will put more time into improving it.
If you (seemingly) resent me as you do, re-think it based on what I just said.

But what you wrote first and what you just wrote came off on completely different wavelengths, which is what people were responding to. I got nothing of what you said in your comment just now from your first one.
There are a great many people still here on M.L, there seem to be at least 16 posts a day coming over my global posts reader and many of us who are on MLU are still here just not so much (like Gaiagil I really only have time to devote to one blog and that will be the Mad Scribbler because 1) it's not fan fic but my own original fiction and I've missed writing it and 2) it's a solid site with few bugs..and a publish box! ). And as for Turbine keeping it up because we stay...like I said there hasn't been a new Scribe or Featured in MONTHS even though people have been nominating. For all intents and purposes, it seems they could care less about M.L. Now it might be because of F2P and all that junk but in all honesty, I've given them months already and nothing has improved and with this 'update' things have only gotten worse. I have been blogging at M.L since the site was created nearly 2 years ago, I don't want to give up Heir of Taliesin, it was my first blog (and my first attempt at fan fic) and I love it. But I can't afford the time sink and stress that posting here has become and I think a lot of other people feel the same way. I'll still be here but I think that my posts are only going to encompass the weekly RP Prompts from Pumyra from now on, posted both here and on MLU. It's really sad that it has come to this but that's the way the cookie crumbles

I'll miss Heir of Taliesin, but I like your original fiction and I'll enjoy reading that on whatever site you write on.
