Thread: Why do some people hate hobbits?

I've noticed this a lot in bios... some people hate hobbits (a lot). I almost never see a character that hates elves, men or dwarves, it's always hobbits. These hobbit haters might be RPers, but a lot of times they aren't. Another thing I noticed is that they just spout off stuff in OOC about hobbits and how much they hate them for no apparent reason. Anyone else run into this and anyone care to venture a guess as to "why?"

The only thing I can think of is some kind of weird video game xenophobia.

On the flip side, we used to have a guy on our server who loved hobbits (although he played race of man). He'd flirt with any female hobbit he could (and would get more flirty if he figured out you were a RL female too).

If it makes you feel any better, my dwarf kinsman hates elves.

As for people hating hobbits, all they need do is add a little ketchup. Or cheese sauce. It works wonders.

You know there is a song that goes:

Short people (hobbits) got no reason to live

They wear platform shoes (well with hobbits, they probably don't wear shoes)
On their nasty little feet (however, hobbit's feet are pretty nasty)

So you see, it isn't that people "hate" hobbits as much as they "hate" short people in general.

As for me, I love the hobbit laugh and the hobbit "roar". The only character I don't care for is the "Male Elf". Heck, I even like female dwarves more than male elves.

BTW, Smeagol started all the hobbit "hating" and he was one! (We hates Bagginses)

I think you're on the wrong server O.o It seems everywhere I go, people hate dwarves- or dorfs, as they're called. Moria is partially responsible for this xD

im thinking it might be the server...

on E..i have seen far more folks who hate dorfs and elphs then hobbits.

most negative thing i hear about hobbits is male walking/running animation.

also i cant think of a single creep player anywhere who doesn't love hobbits....for dinner.

Folkses hates hobbitses because they realize that next to a hobbit- that hobbits are the superior race.
everyone hates dwarves- because they smell
nobody likes 'race of men' because...wheres the imagination there?
elves- nobody likes the way they stand or run- in a cross-gendered sorta way.


You can see this hobbit-envy by counting how many 'humans', dwarves and elves you see running around w/out shoes.

I personally hate elves with a passion. In just about any video game.

I love hobbits! They are adorable! Sadly, I didn't try them until late in the game for me... but even though I had a lvl 61 warden, I HAD to make a hobbit warden. Seeing them run in fast feet mode, tiny little legs pumping away... is just too cute.

As for folks who don't like them... I would suggest one of two things. Hobbit envy as they are tough little buggers. My hobbit warden is quite a bit hardier than my human one. The other might be those folks don't like children.. as there is something very child-like about hobbits.... besides their size! haha

Dwarves have the bad reputation on Brandywine. They're smelly.

I'm a height-ist. Short races just don't look attractive.
I'm only playing a hobbit hunter (and loving it!) becoz it's fun, in a weird sort of way.

Thanks for the replies so far. Maybe it is a server thing. As far as I can tell there is no dwarf hatred going on in Vilya, it's always jokes about hobbits... eating hobbits... hating hobbits... whatever. Then again, since I only play a hobbit, maybe I just notice it more.

It's why I carry around stink bombs and other suck "jokes" BTW

i have several hobbit toons, and i would like to get an all hobbit fellowship going with...whatever ...but gotta be honest...in the 21st hall the other day, there was 3 or 4 hobbits running around following each other, i have to admit, it was kinda...disturbingly creepy

I hate hobbits! I do like the quest Frodo's Burden though.

Well my guess does involve a reference to WoW and their Gnomes.

Gnomes aren't well liked and are often used for sports such as seeing who can punt them furthest off a cliff, Tauren football using the Gnome as the ball, And more punting.

yup yup, on Elen, we hate on the Dorfs the mostest. I'd blame Moria too Laire, except that I figured dorfs were always dirty, smelly, even before that deep hole of an expansion came.

There's the occasional hobbit hater on the chat channels, but they end up mauled by a pile of hobbit lovin' players in chat. Then are never heard from again. And afterwards, usually there's pie. I hope there's no coincidence in the making of that pie. >.> I think I'll hafta refrain from partaking of any mincemeat pies from now on. /suspicious now

I have gotten to highly love playin' the little buggers. (Okay. I will admit, for my warg, it's more of a hunger fetish, that she loves them so much. )
I always knew I was going to have a hobbit hunter the day Lotro launched (Hobbits on speed was just too much fun/funny). But I didn't know I'd end up wanting to go hobbit too, when I made my minstrel. And it's too late to reroll my burg into a hobbit (Supreme Scholar, way too much work). But I have them created on different servers when I am in the mood.

They're prolly all tryin' to pick on ya Jilya of Villa. errr... Jilla. We lub our hobbitses on Elen.

I think hobbits are the best. I have a burning hatred for elves though. I don't like their fleeing Middle Earth. Seems kinda wimpy to me.

well, I've had a positive experience while playing as a hobbit... this female elf in Bree spotted me, and said 'aw, a cute hobbit!'... she then waved at me, and I waved back, as I readied my pony to travel out...

I have 4 characters, because I wanted to get a feel for the gameplay/look of each of the races... each with a different vocation, and each a different class... hunter for the elf, guardian for the dwarf, and champion for the man... I actually really like the burglar class I gave for my hobbit, since it shows that smaller folk can be just as deadly as bigger folk, but in different and unexpected ways (sneaking, backstabs, tricks, etc)...

I was once a diehard hobbit hater. Many of the little folk met grisly deaths in my years as a DM and I ultimately banished them from my games. The combination of small size, cute looks, and hairy feet was simply too much sugar. The idea of such people wearing armor and facing down huge dragons was just too unrealistic. I made fun of them right up to the point of joining Lord of the Rings Online, chiding one friend for trying a hobbit character.

Then a funny thing happened. The house of my kin is located in the Shire. One day I wandered out the front gate instead of mapping to Bree and started doing some quests. Hobbits stopped being cute stuffed animals and became provincial farmers concerned with the mundane matters of their own lives in the face of overwhelming evil. A few had taken up arms to do something about it. They made sense to me.

I ended up creating a female hobbit burglar towards the end of the last Yule Festival and she's stupidly fun to play. I love how she runs like a young child with a full head of steam. Her grunt as she stabs with gusto sounds right. The little "Ta Da!" she does after performing a flip is perfect. I even find myself enjoying her silly laugh.

I still make fun of hobbits, but when I'm on my burglar, Jynxe, I play for the other team.

For the record, I never liked elves much, either.

I just feel uneasy playing short people. Probably since im one of the tallest people wherever i go....

Oh, its okay to make fun of EVERY race, so long as you balance it out.

I don't hate hobbit. I just don't want to be a hobbit. Are they cute? Yes, they are. But i don't want to be cute. I want to look manly, athletic, strong... bla... bla...
Beside, sometime dwarf and hobbit must swim where man and elf can run, and swim is slower than run.
I like to be an elf, or a man.

I also didn't care for hobbits either for very much the same reasons and just their provincial mindset bored me. It was until I started playing this game and meeting the hobbit npcs did I start to become sympathetic towards them. The hobbits in Staddle, Combe and Bree weren't all just the country bumpkin gossip mongers I thought them to be. Even the hobbits in the Shire weren't totally oblivious to the things going on beyond their borders so much as confused and trying to make sense of it all.

As for the elves, I also thought it weak sauce and apathetic of them to desert Middle Earth until I read more into the whole thing. The Valar are godly figures offering the promise of a paradise. It takes a special type to risk possible disfavor from them in order to fight and possibly die in the battle against evil.

Ops... my bad. I should say: "I want to look manly OR "elfy", not "hobbity"." =)). An male elf can look "manly" if you choose the right costume.

I used to hate hobbits (halflings) on EverQuest because the halfling druid was one of the most potent kiters around. The joke was that the halfling druid would kite anything that didn't respond to a "Hail", and that they were powergamers to the max.

Now, I love the little guys, it's folks who have battle.net style character names that I reserve my hate for now

I love have a love hate relationship with hobbits. I love my hobbit burglar("this is hobbiton") however i h8 the non player hobbites. The nosy ones, the hungry ones, the ones who make my grind a million time harder with there plz close up shrew holes quests. I swear, give me a balrog to fight i'm fine but this- this is impossible.

Also i cna't stand elves, almost as bad, only some have my respect. most of them have me picking flowers for there houses

I have two types of reasons, game mechanic reasons and racial reasons.

1) I do not think hobbits should be wardens and guardians at all, and even hunters are pushing it in my mind. They are frail and it goes somewhat against lore, sure they had bounders, but a bounder is alot different from a warden. A hobbit should not be able to hold his own next to any of the other races.
2) I just can't RP as a hobbit and I don't like RPing with a hobbit, they don't leave their specific area, what are they doing in the Misty Mountains, oh they are on some epic quest, thats real original.
3) They are annoying, I mean this in game, the NPC's, they are always whining and they are kind of snobby, more snobby than elves.
4) They don't wear shoes, their feet stink, it really is rude to other people to let your stinky feet be inhaled by all.

On a side note, I am not a hobbit hater on all my characters, just the vast majority of them. Another side note, more of my characters and with a more furious passion hate elves than hobbits.

Oh, and 5) Frodo and Sam in the movies ruined it for me. Sure they were great actors, but they were annoying as all get out.

6) Why does my tough, heavy, mean Dwarf guardian have to talk to Sam for the level 45 class quests? That infuriates me as well and doesn't help my racist hobbit views in RP.

That and they are the only playable race that can be "fat" in other games, the vast majority of my characters are overweight, because everyone I know is such, and it seems more realistic to me, so I guess with that point I am somewhat jealous that my Dwarf and human characters can not be overweight.

People hate hobbits cause hobbits are pretty much everything we are taught to dislike.

They are fat
They are short
They are lazy (Which is funny as most people are but we then turn around and bad mouth being lazy....)
They are pretty much happy being short and fat and lazy


The idea of "Hobbits should not be able to take a pounding from x" makes no sense to me. I do not care if you are an awesome dwarf, a cool man, a kick butt hobbit, or one of those wimpy little elf things, a dragon steps on you ... you are paste. A dragon breaths fire on you... you are paste. Sauron introduced your face to his mace... you are paste.

Every fantasy MMO with a short race has this problem, where in the short race should some how not be able to do the same "super-hero" stuff that other races can. It never makes sense to me.


I only wish hobbits could be captains, with hobbit-race pets.

its called height-ism and is discrimination just like any other.

as for lore Waxe i guess you never heard about the Battle of the Greenfields?

where golf was invented by a guardian-like hobbit

oh and lets not forget the company of hobbit archers(hunters) sent to fornost to fight there.

you can still find their arrowheads lying about and the skeletons of those that fell there.

Wouldn't call that a "guardian-like" hobbit, he had a big club. He did not have heavy armour, I just don't think hobbits should be able to wear heavy armour. I see them more as children, not very strong and durable.

True though, stepped on by a dragon, your gonna be ash, whether you are a Dwarf, Hobbit, Ent, fish, turkey, or a smaller dragon.

We're too epic for them. That simple.

It's like... when people go out to drink, and they end up drinking something that is too strong for them. They don't blame themselves for having weak knees and a whiny little stomach, no, they blame the drink!

But they are not children. They may not, on average, have uber troll like strength, but then neither do men nor elves. Elves more then anyone should not be able to wear heavy armor, but those little twigs walk around in 75lbs of armor as if it was nothing. (And no, your lvl 15 guardian does not have "mithril armor". Heck, I doubt few elves weight more then 75 pounds to begin with....

I personally love the Hobbits in general -- I found the Widow Froghorn quest chain in Staddle ridiculously adorable, Avetha (my Hobbit Guardian on Arkenstone) is too cute when she's drunk, and my main Guardian on Imladris (my shieldmaiden of Rohan by the name of Denenthera) has a certain soft spot for them, and does NOT take kindly to cruelty towards them -- I have a feeling that when it comes time for the Scouring of the Shire, she's likely to be one of the defenders of that land who isn't a hobbit.

That said, probably the only hobbits I dislike are the Sackville-Bagginses due to being stuck-up snobs -- I particularly hate Lobelia because she has the added factor of being greedy and wanting to take someone else's rightful inheritance for herself. I had a good laugh during the Burrows adventure where Bilbo turned his basement (where he said his treasure was) into a spook-house and Lobelia got herself a richly-deserved scare. Serves you right, you greedy toad!

I don't know how often my Hobbit Burglar has been slapped/offered a slap/threatened to get slapped/threatened to be eaten. I don't even burgle in town! My Elf Minstrel definitely gets treated more kindly. I think it's just jealousy, plain and simple.

Let's worry less about why some people hate hobbits and just focus on why we love them. For those of you who say that hobbits are weak and frail, I'm assuming that you didn't read the books, or watch the movies, or even bother to realize that you're playing Lord of the Rings.

Hobbits, if you didn't know, accomplished in the course of about a year what Dwarves, Men, and Elves weren't able to accomplish over the course of several MILLENNIA! Id est, the destruction of the Ring of Power, the destruction of Barad Dur, the unmaking of the Witch-King, and the final poke in the lidless eye of Sauron himself.

So, keep hating. No one cares. It's nothing but hobbit-envy.

I just don't like hobbits because so many people make such a big deal over them. If somebody sees a hobbit, they blabber on and on about how "adorable" said hobbit is. Hobbits should stay at home and grow their pipe-weed! Leave the adventuring to the real heroes!

This is a great first post and I agree it's jealousy of hobbit awesomeness.
