Re: A Hobbit's Tale - Back There Again...

The bear came upon them, knocking Slamwise from Hal. She chased him to the edge of the water, to the edge of the Ford, when suddenly, another elf appeared! "Slamwise, it appears you cannot stay out of trouble" chided the newcomer. "It is good that we have placed many watchers along your path!"

The elf left Slamwise standing on the edge of the Ford, as he confronted the bear. The bear, sensing a stronger opponent, turned back, with the elf now in pursuit... "Just cross the Ford and continue on the path on the far side... you will soon reach fair Rivendell" the elf's call faded in the distance as he continued his bear hunt. Slamwise remounted Hal and they crossed the river.

"[He] heard the splash of water. It foamed about his feet. He felt the quick heave and sugre as the horse left the river and struggled up the stony path. He was across the Ford." JRR Tolkien

"One morning they forded a river at a wide shallow place full of the noise of stones and foam. The far bank was steep and slippery." JRR Tolkien

Slamwise paused on the far bank, then left Hal there and returned to the water. Elladan and Elrohir had told of an amazing tale here at the Ford, not long ago when Frodo and Sam had passed.

Re: A Hobbit's Tale - Back There Again...

Elladan and Elrohir had told Slamwise to beware, the elven enchantment had been placed on the river by Elrond, and enhanced by Gandalf. The river bed at the ford was normally rocky and strewn with debris as the fast moving waters spread and slowed at the wide crossing. But as Slamwise noticed, the river bed had been scoured clean, with nary a rock to be seen. The story of the Frodo's crossing as told by the elves came vividly to life as he gazed at the river, as the black riders had nearly taken him.

"Then the leader, who was now half across the ford, stood up menacing in his stirrups, and raised up his hand. Frodo was stricken dumb... The foremost of the black horses had almost set foot upon the shore." JRR Tolkien.

"At that moment there came a roaring and a rushing: a noise of loud waters rolling many stones. Dimly Frodo saw the river below him rise, and down along its course there came a plumed cavalry of waves. White flames seemed to Frodo to flicker on their crests and he half fancied that he saw amid the water white riders upon white horses with frothing manes. The three Riders that were still in the midst of the Ford were overwhelmed : they disappeared, buried suddenly under angry foam.... "JRR Tolkien.

Slamwise could picture Frodo's companions coming to his aid, as he had been helped so many times on this journey, now confronting the remaining Riders with flame and glory chasing the remainder of the Black Riders into the flood.

"The black horses were filled with madness and leaping forward in terror they bore their riders into the rushing flood. Their piercing cries were drowned in the roaring of the river as it carried them away." JRR Tolkien.

Slamwise returned to Hal, mounted and they began the climb up the trail on the far side of the Ford. This was, he hoped, the final leg of the journey. Ahead lay Rivendell and his cousin Samwise, and answers to his questions. He hoped their cousin Hal also was safe and...

"at that moment he felt more tired than he ever remembered feeling before. He was thinking once again of his comfortable chair before the fire in his favourite sitting-room in his hobbit-hole, and of the kettle singing. Not for the last time!" JRR Tolkien.

The far bank was steep and slippery. When they got to the top of it... they saw that the great mountains had marched down very near to them. Already they seemed only a day's easy journey from the feet of the nearest. JRR Tolkien.

My dear friend, i really love your story.
I think Turbine should be aware of players such as yourself and help them continue their work, as this might draw more players.
I can't wait for the rest of the story.
    Take care now.

Erendralin/G-Talis, thank you very much. Your kind words really do mean a lot, and are much appreciated. We (my son and I) are very glad you're enjoying our story.

Slamwise continued to wander, a little unsure of the path, as there seemed to be many little hidden vales and narrow, unexpected canyons.

"[He] was growing anxious, for [he] saw that the house might be hidden almost anywhere between [here] and the mountains. ... unexpected valleys, narrow with steep sides, that opened suddenly at [his] feet... gullies they could almost leap over but very deep with waterfalls in them.... There were bogs some of them green pleasant places to look at, with flowers growing bright and tall; but a pony that walked there with a pack on its back would never have come out again." JRR Tolkien

It was indeed a much wider land from the for to the mountains than you would have guessed. The only path was marked with white stones, some of which were small, and others were half covered with moss or heather." JRR Tolkien.

And there were other strange little things that were completely unexpected...

    Thank you very much!

Storing the mystery of the strange chicken nest as something to be solved later, Slamwise continued on his walk, now leading Hal. Suddenly clear beautiful voices burst out of the quiet night air...

    "O! What are you doing,
    And where are you going?
    Your [pony needs] shoeing!
    The river is flowing!
    O! tra-la-la-lally
    here down in the valley!

    O! What are you seeking,
    And where are you making?
The [bundles of wood that are otherwise censored] are reeking,
    The bannocks are baking!
    O! tril-lil-lil-lolly
    the valley is jolly,
    ha! ha!" JRR Tolkien

These verses went on and on, song like a burst of laughter in the trees, and then he saw the elves... the Elves of Rivendell!

thank you Marguerita, coming from you, I count that as the highest praise.

/bow (PS - I hope you're feeling well and improving!)

This story has gotten quite long hasn't it? Sorry for the length folks, but it's funny how that sort of sneaks up on you, when you're just posting once a day or a few times a week! I should probably read back from the beginning to make sure we've stayed consistent with the story. I think we're pretty much on track. One thing we might need help with in coming weeks, is an escort into Goblin-town, and in particular I'd love to take Slamwise on Bilbo's path down to Gollum's pool.

We are glad that people are enjoying our story!

Re: A Hobbit's Tale - Back There Again...

More and more, Slamwise felt he had fallen directly into one of old Bilbo's stories... But this was real.

"The elves laughed and sang in the trees; and pretty fair nonsense I daresay you think it. Not that they would care; they would only laugh all the more if you told them so. Soon [Slamwise] caught glimpses of them as the darkness deepened.... "Just look! [Slamwise the hobbit [with] a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!" 'Most astonishing wonderful!" Then they went into another song as ridiculous as the [last]." JRR Tolkien.

Slamwise could not help but sing, laugh and dance along!

"Welcome to the Gates of Imladris!" cried the elves. "You have been long awaited young Slamwise!"

Re: A Hobbit's Tale - Back There Again...

Almost at the last Homely House, Slamwise carefully passed through the Gates of Imladris and came to the edge of the valley.

"Here it is at last!" he called, and [he and Hal] looked over the edge. They saw a valley far below. They could hear the voice of hurrying water in a rocky bed at the bottom; the scent of trees was in the air; and there was a light on the valley-side across the water...They slithered and slipped in the dusk down the steep zig-zag ath into the secret valley of Rivendell. The air grew warmer as they got lower, and the smelll of the pine trees made him drowsy, so that every now and again he nodded and dearly fell off, or bumped his nose on the pony's neck." JRR Tolkien.

Re: A Hobbit's Tale - Back There Again...

His first view of the valley of Rivendell about took his breath away. The beautiful pines, the rushing water, the sounds, the smells, the elven homes peaking out of the green below.

"At last one [elf] came out from the trees and bowed... 'Welcome to the valley!' he said.. 'You are a little out of your way, that is, if you are making for the only path across the water and to the house beyond. We will set you right, but you had best get on foot until you are over the bridge.'" JRR Tolkien

Once across the water he would come to the Last Homely House west of the Misty Mountains, at last! He hurried on his way, leading Hal along the steep path.

Yes, it was a little tricky getting here at Lvl 26 but we made it! Those tricksy hobbittses! Soon we'll see where Slamwise's story carries him next!

The fragrance of the valley was of lilacs, no... magnolias... no, pine, and spruce, and fir... roses... oh all of those and more. It was as if the trees and the streams and the hills were singing, a weaving symphony of peace and goodwill.

"On [he] went, leading [his] pony, till [he was] brought to a good path and so at last to the very brink of the river." JRR Tolkien.

It was flowing fast and noisily as mountain-streams do of a summer evening, when sun has been all day on the snow far up above." JRR Tolkien.

"There was only a narrow bridge of stone without a parapet, as narrow as a pony could well walk on; and over that they had to go, slow and careful... leading his pony by the bridle. The elves had brought bright lanterns to the shore and they sang a merry song as [Slamwise] went across" JRR Tolkien.

Will be interesting to see if Turbine comes up with a 'Hobbit' flashback 'quest' to coincide with the movie(s) release. Think similar to the Balrog does Moria thingee you do outside of Hollin Gate except a whole series of scenes from the Hobbit -- we already have the terrain assets for some of it and it wouldnt be a sandbox but canned scenes.

oh, wouldn't that be fun! A raid to Goblintown to escort little Slamwise! I wonder if we could get 12 dwarves and 1 loremaster...? Thank you for your offer Venom much appreciated! And I may take you up on that offer. Slamboy and I are still trying to decide what to do next.

That would be phenomenal! I hope they do some form of Hobbit tie-in but I suspect there may be licensing limitations. I would love to see Northern Mirkwood and the Lonely Mountain and the Cairn of Beorn and the Iron Hills.

Slamwise entered the open doors, and the sights took his breath away. The house was beautiful, the elven architecture amazing, and throughout the songs and poems of the elves seemed to breathe in the background, filling the very air.

He began to wander the grounds and the house, looking for someone in authority...but here he was, "now safe in the Last Homely House east of the Sea. That house was, as Bilbo had long ago reported, 'a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all'. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear, and sadness." JRR Tolkien.

He wandered inside and out, looking for his cousins or the Master of the House.

You could really make it up of any class/race, I could see a raid sized group descending upon Goblin town, it would not even be that hard to justify from a lore perspective, considering the danger such a place could pose to Rivendell and the rest of the free people. The only issue I could see would be the justification for bringing a low level hunter along, unless they were playing the Gandalf card and they were only there escorting you because they had other business to attend to, say they were going to help out in the battles going on in Mirkwood(if they ever install northern Mirkwood) which would be a good excuse to bring a large party of elves since they are helping out their kin in Mirkwood. You could also grab some dwarves and say they are headed to the lonely mountain I suppose, or men and say they are headed to Dale. Regardless, they are heading that way and were asked by Elrond if they would be willing to take care of the issues going on in GoblinTown.
    Freeps:Taredhelion(63,Guard) ; Turmanarmo(32,RK) ; Rawlings(22,Burg) ; Drengi(29,Champ) ; More that will be leveled later
Creeps: None of note ... yet.

Yeah, but keeping with the re-enactment of the Hobbit, it would be grand if the raid could be 12 dwarves (of a mixture of classes) and one human loremaster - closest I could see to Thorin and Company with Gandalf escorting young Slamwise. But any mix of volunteers would be fun. Maybe one day I'll see if we can get enough interested parties to do this.

In fact, my little hobbit (not so little anymore) is leveling up Slamwise a bit more on his own and we're now reading the full Lord of the Rings together, so Slamwise's path could reasonably lead down to Moria... We'll see, but there's a good chance we might restart this Hobbit's adventures in the near future.

    Cheers!

too kind. really. but thank you. Your post prompted me to flip back through some of the earlier posts - good memories - my little hobbit is now 9 years old and we're now much of the way through The Lord of the Rings - we might extend our story to now follow Frodo's path south....
